Under the new scoring system there wouldn’t even be a dispute: Elena and Anton would be the Olympic champions without any doubt. Their technical content, their transitions and their presentation were so much superior to Jamie and David’s that nobody would raise an eyebrow at their victory. But back then the Canadians, and especially Jamie, were such drama queens that they couldn’t possibly accept a clean but frankly mediocre performance, however much the audience may have supported them, wasn’t good enough for the gold. The only good thing that came out of that debacle was the new scoring system, which now is far more objective and visible.

This pair deserved the gold. There was a reason Russia dominated pairs skating for so many years because they were able to create programs that were both technically difficult combined with beautiful artistry. They remind me of my favorite teams G&G and M&D

Только посмотрела выступление Волосажар и Транькова ( на О. И.) очень они мне нравятся, но Бережная и Сихарулидзе мне кажется неповторимы. Конечно я не специалист, но какая то у них Особенная пластика, внутренняя наполненность что ли... В общем смотреть на них можно бесконечно.

As a United States citizen, and a former pair skater, this performance was the best of the night. They made a small mistake but it everything else was superior in my humble opinion. Breathtaking.

У этой пары был свой стиль. Нежнейшая и хрупкая Лена и харизматичный и брутальный Антон - как бриллиант в крепкой оправе. Смотреть на них - одно наслаждение.

Мне кажется, что они даже дышали синхронно! Высший пилотаж! Одна из самых красивых пар за всю обозримую историю фигурного катания. Сколько нежности и любви в их катании.

Their routine seems much more intricate compared to the Canadians. I saw a couple flubs, but still good enough to keep the gold. It’s like if someone does a program with 5 triple axels and slightly flubs one vs someone who perfectly does 5 double axels. Obviously the tougher program deserves to win as long as they skates well majority. Just my opinion.

I'm here in 2022 revisiting the 2002 Olympic programs of both teams. I clearly remember watching them in 2002 and my overwhelming impression at that time was that B&S was the superior team despite Anton's bauble. They had the more difficult Moskvina choreography and coupled it with that gorgeous Russian fluidity and flow. They really captured my attention. S&P skated cleanly and well, but slightly woodenly and I was a bit bored by their program and it didn't affect me emotionally. I was not surprised by their 2nd place win, and the ensuing scandal and ultimate assigning of gold medals to both teams was ridiculous, imo. Watching the programs again 20 years later only confirms my initial impression.

This is my favourite pair ever. I also liked Mishkutenok/Kazakova/Dimitriev. I wonder maybe they had the same coaches. Elena and Anton were far ahead any other pair in this competition.

When I watched this back in 2002 and compared their performance to S&P, I already saw back then that Anton & Elena had a much more technically harder program. Even Sandra Bezic said it when she was a commentator with Scott Hamilton. I thought Anton & Elena really deserved the gold. I think this was a bit of a tribute to G&G, they played this music in My Sergei and they played the skating roles of Sergei & Katia in the movie/documentary.

Из-за помарки Сихарулидзе столько воя подняли. А канадцы в короткой программе упали в самом конце - и ничего, их по итогам короткой на 2-е место поставили, выше китайцев, которые не падали.

To all the comments below: If an orchestra has a beautiful piece of music, but an instrument is flat, does that not affect the performance? I do not think anyone has denied these are skilled artists who have grace and fantastic interpretations of their work. The issue is that technicals matter, they matter for a reason.

Can you give t'he Gold to the couple that did a big mistake? The exercise of Russians was stunning but Canadians made no mistakes so they deserved the gold. Too many politics in sport.

Literally 1 visible mistake which the judges justifiably penalised otherwise its was a masterpiece of Russian excellence

After watching the Netflix documentary I started to think that it's comparable to Adelina Sotnikova stealing gold from Kim Yuna. But that case in Sochi was quite obvious while here I have doubts, especially after reading comments. The difference of difficulty level is visible even for a layman like me. I personally prefer Canadians, probably because of the music choice, but I must admit, Russians' choreography was more complex and challenging.

Their only problem was consistency, they did not skate clean quite often, but other than that they were superior, both technically and artistically.

Their program was much more difficult, they had some unclean points which was reflected in their marks for technical merit. But even having some mistakes they skated as a whole. Canadians delivered a cleaner performance on technical merit but that's not enough. For gold you need more on artistry. Russians won the gold fair and square.

Canadians were skating at half speed compared to this.

Bezic mentioned that elena and anton did not skate clean, as if jamie and david skated clean in all their programs and events. In fact jamie had a fall and all those mistakes and yet won gold worst mistake if you think about it.. Worlds 2001, grand prix final 2000 even nationals. So my question now is why so after a clean skate at this event when in other events the media didnt even question why sale pellitier won gold with mistakes on their performance. I just dont get it so can someone explain it to me. Lapinski even mentioned in her interview that whoever skated clean in that event is the better skater. What? From what i know, you can easily skate clean if the program is juniorish.

This program was way more difficult than the Canadians’ one predominantly bc of the choreo and components between the main elements. Even if the jumps were not as smooth as those of S/P I’d still have the Russians first. 5.8/6.0 for BS, 5.8-5.9/5.9 for S/P. Anyway the gap between these two couples and the rest of the field was SO big I’d be probably marking low all evening waiting for these four to take the ice.

Bro you’re absolutely blind, their jumps weren’t clean at all, the key elements of their performance were messy and the interpretation was weak in comparison the the Canadians, who made a literally flawless performance. Not to mention everyone knew that the french judge was corrupt.

Яна Криницына Canadian not perfect, Canadian no cheating by buying off the judges tho. They shoot their own selves in the foot by doing that because now the scores both couples had will never really feel accurate.

The artistic elements here are so much more interesting, even without perfect execution. This is tough, inventive skating.

It's already October 2016 and this is still the most exquisite pairs long program I have ever seen.

I feel they were the best in 2002. So beautiful to watch and a brand new program for the Olympic year while the Canadian couple brought back an old program from the previous year. They deserved the gold medal.

Olympic medals aren't achievement awards. You can be the fasted runner on the planet for four years, but that doesn't earn you a medal. You need to perform on the day. At the end of the day, they didn't do that here.

@@Dark0blivion tell me how it is fair that the Canadians did an incredibly easy 3 year old program and they get a medal while these the Russians executed two very difficult and complex programs filled with artistry and they don't deserve to win. The difference is tha Anton and Elena could do the Canadians program but the Canadians wouldn't be able to do a hard program like they (Anton and Elena) did.

The gold medal was earned and it was a disgrace what was done later gaslighting that French judge. Everything is visible to anyone who has eyes and knows skating still. Y’all buy hammy smiles and an easy program but judges need to try to do their job (and scoring still Isn’t neutral and we all know it) “Tight” or not the scoring is to the standards and if anything they should’ve won by a bigger margin (esp from the short wtf maybe they’d be in bronze re the Chinese pair I guess it doesn’t matter we promote “western” sports not communists that is what this is about innit? As a skater I am about Skating. B&S won this Olympics ALONE dont care what anyone else made happen

They are a magical fabulous pair. It is divinely to watch them. The second such pair has not yet appeared.

I don't think I will ever forgive the Canadian federation and the stupid American media for humiliating this amazing couple with their fake "scandal". Still two of the greatest pair skaters of all time, in my opinion.

I agree. What people don't realize is that during practice the judges set a mark for each couple that represents a perfect performance for that couple and make any deductions from that. On their best day the Canadians could not touch Elena and Anton on their worst day. They deserved 100% of their gold and the Canadians deserved the Silver. This was not corruption. This is how it was done like it or not.

I’m American, so I have no bias toward either pair. Even with the bobble and their “force,” this performance is still superior. The density of their artistry, their architecture, their technical prowess - it’s all spectacular!

Ну, канадцы совсем оборзели. Программу свою катали 2.5 года（даже не год）.Если претензия на золота должна быть новая программа. Так еще канадка пыталась на разминке потравмтровать наших спортсменов.

Здесь всё и талант спортсменов и изысканное настоящее искусство, фирменный почерк Тамары Москвиной!
