I'm glad to see you liked it to. I have always loved the .32 ACP and have a collection of WWII military pistols chambered in it. I know you like mouse guns too, like the Tomcat. I've been known to walk around town with my Tomcat tucked in my pocket. I don't feel I'm under-armed with a good .32 ACP with the right ammo.

@@gway9226 In that caliber you should ALWAYS use fmj and Fiocchi are loaded rather hot. Use a fancy hp and you will get a mediocre penetration and none expansion. You decide. That caliber was successfully used during WWI in trenches so it was not so weak.

I am military Colombian and I have two .32 acp (7.65mm) pistols, really i love these.

The Cheetah in .32 ACP is a most excellent pistol. It's accurate, reliable, and carries enough rounds for its size that I consider it to be a very good defensive piece. It's easier to carry than most 9mm, 10mm, and .45s, and you can get your third round off before the .45 is back on target after the first.

Sadly great pistols like this get discontinued because so many fail to understand that smallest physical size is not the only reason to opt for the smaller calibers. There are many situations where I would prefer a .32 caliber in mid to full size revolvers and pistols. Practical accuracy, rapid fire capability, and lower SPL really are valid issues.

Also Beretta 81 was largely used by Vigili Urbani, now Polizia Locale, the city police . I have carried on duty the 84f, between 1999-2009 in my service in a small village on Mountains in central Italy police

I think the main reason it isn't so popular is because it's a semi rimmed cartridge which makes magazine capacity and feeding difficult. Only one pistol in existence I know of, the cz 82 is chambered in it and has 15 rounds in a mag. Everything else is usually 8 or less. The Beretta 81 is 12 for some reason. Must have been difficult for some reason. The cz skorpion mags are 20 rounds but that's the highest I've seen. Must be a reason it never caught on as much as it could have.

People act like 380 is a joke they forget for a century people defended themselves with 25s and 32s

Nice review of the 81. The surplus 81's were a phenomenal value for the money. I obtained a BB variant. I'm a huge fan of the 7,65mm cartridge. I regularly carry a 81 FS or a PPK. My magazines are loaded with S&B 73 grain ammo. Europeans tend to load the 7,65mm cartridge to its potential. If one opts to carry a 7,65mm pistol, best to go with fmj ammo and skip the hollow point mentality. The 7,65mm Browning cartridge should not be dismissed as a viable self defense option. In the end, it's shot placement that counts. So easy to rapidly and consistently put 7,65mm on target.

32acp is one of my favorite rounds to shoot, which I probably have close to a dozen pistols in this caliber and one my favorite is the Beretta 1935, manufacturer in 1944. Among my list is the FN 1910 and Mauser 1934 which are also sweet shooters..thanks Sootch for sharing another classic pistol in this caliber.

For fans of the .32 ACP, studies of Actual shootings have shown the .32 ACP with the Fiocchi 60 grain JHP, or the Cor-Bon 60 grain JHP Achieved 65% one shot stops. .45 ACP hardball only achieved 63% . .32 ACP 71 grain FMJ achieved 49% one shot stops, or EXACTLY the same percentage as the .38 Special 158 grain RNL loading. That's pretty impressive for the little .32. Its not as feeble as some people think.

@Max Paine According to information I've seen here and on other sites, In the Ian Fleming novels, Bond carried a .25 Beretta. But in the movie 'Dr No', Bond is forced to 'upgrade' from a .380 Beretta model 1934 to a .32 Walther PPK! However, in the early 'Saint' TV series, Roger Moore does carry a .32 Beretta model 1935 .

Paul Harrell taught us that the 32 can be adequate, if you choose the right bullet. He prefers FMJ over JHP because the 32 hollow point expansion is meh, and if the expansion is meh, you need more penetration.

I like the .32 as well. I own 3 colt 1903s one is my carry. I also have s CZ 70 and a m70 and just order an 81 and I made no apologies either, low recoil accurate and any one that thinks it’s not enough power still would not want to be on the business side lol

I picked mine up today. The condition was better than expected! A couple small nicks on the front of the grip and one small one on the trigger guard. No rust and the bluing was great, at least 95%. Very happy with mine!

The Beretta Cheetah in 380 ACP is one of my favorite guns of all time. It was the only Beretta firearm in my family up until all the recent Beretta APX sales ($328 shipped is a great deal for a modular striker fired pistol) and my mom pulled one out to scare a robber who pushed her down and tried to steal her purse back in 2002. This was my favorite gun to shoot at the range back when I was a kid. It's a flat shooter with very low recoil for a compact gun. My father ended up giving me his IMI Jericho 941 instead when I turned 21 because I'm a bigger guy (6'5") and he wanted to save the Cheetah for my little brother instead. While I love my Jericho and have been carrying it for almost a decade, I still wished I've gotten the Cheetah instead.

I have the 87 Cheetah in .22lr. Was my first pistol and is still one of my favorites!

The 87 was my third pistol after I realized I could shoot all day for the price of one box of 9mm. I still think it’s one of my most beautiful firearms!

Great video I think sootch is great for teaching people about how to handle guns and different guns. He is easy to listen to and very informative

Beretta manufactures dependable, accurate firearms. I love the sights on them. I use a lot of ammo when I shoot the 96a1, I just have a great time with it.

I really love these pistols. Currently own the 84fs in nickle. Love to get the 81, and an 85. Especially the 85 with the thinner grips.

My local gun shop got in a shipment of several hundred of these. I got mine about a week before this video, worth every one of the $239 and then some

I got this model just recently, it shoots great no misfires or jams at all. If it's good enough for Italian police, it's good enough for me.

First I have already ordered one of these from Classic and can’t wait to get it. I am a .32 acp fan. You mentioned there were only 3 u.s. manufacturers of ..32 but you forgot U.S. Armament who is making new Colt 1903s I happen to carry an old or switch off and carry a New 1903 as a carry gun.... very accurate and reliable. People fail to remember that .32s have been combat pistols in numerous wars and were the OSS issue weapon. Accuracy not caliber is what makes a combat weapon. I did watch that gentleman's video and he is very professional and I've watched several of his videos and I just bought one haven't shot it yet but I think it's a great little piece and I like what the gentleman said at the end of the video having any firearm it's better than having no firearm when it comes to carrying concealed

FYI... I installed the barrel from my 81 into my model 85 380. Using the 85 380 magazine, I shot an entire mag of 32 ACP through the 85 with no malfunctions. I also loaded a 380 cartridge into the model 81 32 ACP magazine, and it seemed to fit like it was made for it. Magazines for the model 84 double stack 380 may work in the model 81. Someone might have done this and can let us know if that's the case. Using 84 mags may solve the problem of the lack of availability of magazines for the model 81.

I bought one and I love it. It is in very good condition.

I was told back in the 70s as a kid that the .32 ACP caliber in Europe was about having a caliber that you shoot to wound someone, stop them, but not kill them. This is in contract to US rounds like .45 and .44 calibers in particular which were both for wild animal and taming the West. The .32 is certainly better than .22LR at least. I think is someone sees one with this firearms, they are likely to presume it is .380 or 9mm. Nice to know they are still being made in Italy, so I presume that means parts are going to be out there.

I bought my Beretta 85bb from DK Firearms in Bowling Green Va and I really like it. It's my carry gun these days.

My Grandma had a Mauser 1914 .32ACP she kept in her night stand. When I got it after she went to live with my aunt, the barrel was shot out in it and I put some rounds through it way back then before giving it to one of my brother in laws. With the barrel shot out the round might have gone ten feet before falling to the ground but that little sucker was loud. My Grandma never would have hit anybody with it but it was loud enough to scare them off. I really did not want it and did not want to sink money into it for another barrel if there even were any available. The barrel looked almost like it was a smooth bore it was so bad not to mention the chamber throat. No telling how old the ammo was but it still went bang. Haha. Nobody even knew she had the pistol until it was found. Thanks for sharing.

I have a lot of Beretta's 2 950's, 2 21a's, a Tomcat, a 92fs, a PX4. I purchased one of these from Classic Firearms.. it is in beautiful condition. I cannot wait to shoot it, I really like the .32. I hope it is reliable. I have had issues with both my Tomcat and Keltec.. lack of reliability renders them range guns only. And, yes, I shoot ball ammo.

I ordered one, liked it so much, ordered another one today, great pistols, no hand select, just luck of the draw, these are in nice shape.

That gun when being fired looks steady in the hand and recoil doesn’t look bad at all. Looking at glocks, once you fire a round the gun moves up from horizontal position. Looks like these beratta’s are great guns.

Wonderful pistol, elegance+reliability. 32 ACP is a very good option for self-defence, i wish will be re-evaluated in the future...

Never shot an 81 before, but I have shot the older model 70/71 in .32 ACP/7.65 browning, and liked the soft recoil of that caliber. Easy to shoot accurate groupings (4" or less) using both hands or with one hand @ 30ft or less. May have to give this one a try.

I bought four of these last year while prices were dropping, and tested a couple modified Mecgar Cheetah 380 mags that provide up to 15 round capacity in these with .32 acp. Today, with the virus-panic, supply of these pistols seems to be drying up. In recent KZread tests of .32 acp, the hottest conventional loading was Fiocchi 73 gr. FMJ. Meanwhile, there's a unique new copper round by Lehigh Defense, called Xtreme Cavitator that may be a game changer for those that prefer to rely on .32 acp.

Taurus model 58 is similar. Love these smaller 92 type guns

I ordered one of these the 1st day Classic offered them. Payed for hand select. I would rate mine as excellent. These things ooze quality. .32acp is a potent little round and wouldn't hesitate to carry. I was also able to obtain a relatively rare CZ-83 in .32acp.

Ordered and received two from Classic. Both are in real good shape. Very impressed. We'll get to shake them out on Saturday.

Beretta makes beautiful guns and this one is no exception. I like larger size guns that shoot smaller calibers. They're just fun to shoot and although caliber snobs may bad mouth them, I don't see them lining up to be practice targets.

From the late '70 this gun was in use to the 2000/2001 (the lastest) to Polizia Penitenziaria (national prisons guard corp) and the Corpo Forestale dello Stato ( national forests guard corp), after Beretta 92sb and 92 F/Fs. Italian police forces the Polizia di Stato and Carabinieri in the mid '70 swichted from Beretta 34 to 92 series (92s, sb, f, fs). The Guardia di Finanza ( financial crimes/customs/ border specialized police) from Beretta 34 to 84F and 92sb/F/fs in 380 and 9 luger, booth in use

When I was stationed in Italy in 78-80, the Carabinieri carried the model 1934, as did most local police. The Carabinieri started getting them just prior to my being transferred back to the States. I was very impressed with both the firearms.

I got one bc it is cool and was cheap. Loved it so much, I got another one. Very glad I did - and glad I got some ammo for them. Wish I had gotten a lot more, but doesn't everybody right now...

I have a Tomcat 3032, and love it for plinking. Nice to see more .32ACPs coming into to country; now, maybe the ammo price will come down a bit.

Midway USA store has some cheaper ammo for 16.99 for a box of 50 fmj but you still have to pay tax unless you buy so much , like 50-100$ worth.

Great review. I hope someone is still watching this and can respond. Some observations and questions about the 85 FS (.380) I just acquired. I also have had the 92 FS and 90-TWO for several years - which I love - so maybe the 85 is being compared unfavorably. Aesthetics and overall ergonomics are great, typical Beretta quality. However.... Trigger position and trigger shape - I don't find the trigger to be especially comfortable, and it sits too far forward in DA mode within the trigger guard (note the 85 FS has the squared guard, not rounded as on the 81). Maybe that fact - that it sits too far forward - is the problem, but the large curve in the trigger and placement of my finger results in the pointed bottom of the trigger actually digging into my finger, particularly in dA mode. Additionally, the resting DA position of the trigger so far forward renders little space within the guard for my finger. Trigger machining - the upper end of the trigger is machined thinner than the body of the trigger to allow it to fold into the frame when pulled. This leaves a pointed edge on both sides of the trigger, and not quite smoothed or eased enough to soften that point as it pushes into the flesh of my finger. Trigger pull - I find the DA pull to be too strong and would like to ease off a few pounds. The break is not as clean/crisp as I would like, in either DA or SA mode, too much pre-travel. Is there a trigger replacement or after market fix? I have seen three alternative triggers for the 92 - one is "curved," one "semi-curved,." and one "straight." If there were a 'semi-curved" or "straight" option for the 85, that would probably solved most of the issues. If the pull can be eased, that would resolve the heavy pull. Rear sight - the rear sight is notched with a single white dot in the middle and below the notch, which I find disconcerting - it just isn't a natural acquisition of the target. Would much prefer the double dot on either side of the notch. Will the 92 rear sight or after market double dot fit within the dovetail on top of the slide? I asked Beretta about a replacement and they said there wasn't one nor would the 92 rear sight fit, but the dovetails on the 85 and 92 appear to be identical. Generally, I find the 92 and its counterparts to be well-supported by Beretta and after market suppliers, but not so the 85. Thanks to anyone who can respond.

Very nice pistol. Nice size, reminds me of a beefed up model 1934 Beretta.

I got that pistol and fired some Fiocchi 60 gr XTP JHPs into 4 one gal water jugs. It put a dent in the back of the third jug and expanded to about .41 inches. That's better penetration than with a lot of 380 expanding loads. I think with this longer barrel and hotter European ammo, the 32 ACP is a viable self defense round. Another consideration is how quickly you can make those follow up shots due the light recoil.

I fired another Fiocchi 60 gr load through the 81. This was their Shooting Dynamics Semi Jacketed Hollow Point, rated at 1100 fps. This round expanded beautifully to about .44", but only penetrated to put a dent in the back of the second one gallon water jug. So the Fiocchi 60 gr XTP load at 1000 fps appears to be the better round if you're looking for something close to 12" of penetration in ballistic gel. (That's what penetration through 3 one gallon water jugs approximates.)

Mine was delivered today and it is beautiful. Looks like it was carried but never fired.

I also picked up the same from Classic Firearms. Great little carry piece. I was able to find Magazines on ebay for $14 each. Bought all they had. the only thing I have done to the weapon was to mark the front sight with white nail polish and changed out the grips to Pachmayr rubberized grips. Never liked the plastic grips on this gun.

As the famous Horse(from Ren & Stimpy) always says.."I Like It, I Like It Alot"!I carry a lil 380.acp alot in the summer, but Imma hafta get me one a these lil boogers...thnx brother Sootch, always the best sir!MIKE

Very underrated gun. Extremely easy to shoot fast and accurately. Longer barrel, so over 1000 fps. Some James Bond maybe to it too. EDC. Well plus the 12g in the car.

.32 acp mags for the Beretta 81 are very expensive. However, a Beretta 84 Mag (in 380 acp) can be slightly modified to load.32. The mag mag functions perfectly in the Model 81.

Military Arms Channel did their surplus Beretta review this morning ... early bird "gets" the worm. Speaking of "gets", "get" original Sootch!

FYI I found an extra magazine through Midwest Gun Works. They only had the stainless versions available, but it looks cool contrasted to the blued 81.

Had to pick one up for the price. I’ve always liked beretta quality. but when I was in the Navy in the early to mid 90’s I would always choose a .45 over the M9 1911’s fit in my hand better.

LOK makes a great grips for this gun. Love mine.

If you have the hammer cocked you don't need to use your trigger and finger to decock it, you just have to turn to safe positition on the side and the hammer goes down without firing. I've one of those Cheetah 81f and that's how i decock my handgun. It's a superb machine a bit big for concealed carry but i use it anyway for it's accuracy, easy to use, relliability and as someone said, i don't mind the caliber as long i train where to hit...lol. And great review. Keep up the great work.

Didn't get to shoot it yet. Been sick for a little while with a couple more months to go. I'll hope to have it out next weekend if I feel up to it. It will fit nicely with my CZ-70 and Walther PP. I load for .32 ACP already and the secret to all of these euro pistols is get that bullet to 900fps for reliability........
