Thanks brother for another awesome video. We had spoke in the pattern testing of the 12g, with Boss ammo. To refresh your memory, I was on the fence of 12g or 20g in the A400 xtreme plus. That being said, I know you just got the 20g. But I only have the ability to buy one or the other for now. If you really had to choose a all around A400 to us for ducks, geese, dove, and turkey. What would you recommend? I did shoulder both in Cabelas, and I loved them both. You are right about the 20g being a little lighter in weight, which is why I was leaning towards the 20g. The only thing is I never shot a 20g, and want to make sure I'm not cutting my self short. Usually shoot ducks/geese under 40 yards, but want to make sure if I did need to take a shot further then 40yards that I wouldn't limit myself because the 20g wouldn't handle it. Will the 20g handle 40 yards or more, or high wind situations? Any insight on your thoughts would greatly help me out. Sorry for the long comment. Thanks again brother

Well as I stand right now I’d say the 12. If you watch my other videos and duck hunts the 12 is the way to go for everything. I think the 20 has some great potential. I just haven’t found a choke I fell in love with. Or the right combo yet. But with the 12 I shoot a kicks high flyer full, with 3/5 mix from boss. And I have a ton of success.

I have the A400 12 gauge, I shoot mostly a kicks high flyer in Full, and my everyday shot shell is a Boss 3” #4 in there 1 3/8oz. I’ve tried a few different chokes and shells. But that combo works great for me on ducks & geese all season long. On windy days I will sometimes shoot 3” #3 Boss. I hope this helps. I’ve been shooting this combo for about 3 years.

Muller's "H2O" 3-set of Decoy, Passing and UFO for the A400 Xtreme Plus 20 gauge will give you options. I use only the Decoy choke on the Xtreme Plus 20 gauge for upland game. Patterns at 25 and 35 yds with 2 3/4" target and upland game loads put every every pellet inside 24" at 25 yds and filled the 24" circle at 35 yds. I'm a smaller and older guy and need the reduced recoil. It's so light with 2 3/4" 1 oz lead or steel loads under 1400 fps that I don't even notice it. Marksmanship becomes more critical with 20 gauges, you will have fewer ammo options, and you'll push fewer pellets down range, but Jim Muller of Muller Chokes recommends finding a load that works best for the type of waterfowl you shoot (puddle or diver) and sticking with it. Pattern tests on KZread show Bismuth works very well with his chokes. To see why, check out his four part interview at kzread.info/dash/bejne/iKZ8ztGzqZibYM4.html on "The MVM Show" for very interesting facts about chokes and ammo for waterfowl hunting. Also, since we're talking about 20 gauge, check out the moderator's pattern test video with the Decoy choke on his Franchi Affinity 3 in 20 gauge using Hevi Bismuth and Jim Muller's recommended pattern target. No matter what you choose, enjoy the experience!

Random question. How's that kick off system feel when you try to manually compress it? Mine seems awful stiff almost like it's hanging up. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be but I would have thought it would be more smoothe and easier to compress.

  • @_DRWC_Official

In this particular shotgun I do not feel it at all. This is the smoothest shotgun in regards to recoil. Now in my a300 you can feel the recoil system move in the stock like a piston. Which I have mixed feelings about. But the a400xp is my go to for now. It’s been a great waterfowl gun.

Yes. I can understand the frustration. Chokes are literally tightening the barrel down to constrict your shot. They are rated as such open cylinder, improved cylinder, modified, improved modified, full, extra full. Often you don’t want to shoot steel or “duck loads” through anything tighter than improved modified chokes otherwise you risk blowing your barrel out. #2 steel is about all you need for ducks and geese. Shooting lead shot you can get away with tighter chokes like full and extra full because lead compresses. I use muller passing choke which is likely close to an improved mod choke in constriction. With Boss ammunition. It does fantastic.

40-60 yards your mostly gonna want to shoot a full or extra full choke, modified at best for 40 yards but full beyond that.

Dude I love it more than the SBE3 for sure. Feels way better in the hand. Still working o it the logistics on a solid choke tube. I may try a Jebs through it or a helix. Looking for a solid uniform pattern. The muller choke wasn’t bad…but I think it could be better. So, more testing to come.

@@_DRWC_Official Sounds great man, only thing the SBE has over this is the lighter weight. I own a 12ga A400 XP and love it and have been greatly considering the 20ga. Weight is the only issue for me and I know its really not much more than the sbe, like .8lbs more but still. Have you had any cycling issues with it?

@@johnbeilhartiv1042 I’ve had zero cycling issues out of both a400xp 20 & 12…or miss fires. Weight is a thing for me too…but for some reason too light of a gun can make you swing wildly, or you deal with more recoil.
