I'm also an Engineer (Mechanical),We use bentonite clay in casting operation for mould making purpose, it has properties to hold the sand in place and also gives adequate strength to mould/shell formed. The way the officer explained is awesome, I think he might be an Engineer with good experience.

Sand is a non-cohesive soil but Bentonite is a cohesive soil which bind the Sand and also work as lubrication in drilling work.

Bentonite is a binder which also used in foundary sand(casting process) to provide binding to the sand.

Rawat Sir, Bentonite is banned by NGT because it cause irreversible pollution to land and water bodies. Now instead of bentonite, polymer is to be used as it do not cause pollution.

Sorry Sir, the civil team is failed to explain you the proper work of bentonite, It's work to create only hydrostatic pressure on the perticular space where the same is filled, and works to stop the out siders forces like Earth forces, water forces etc. They are bypassing the system of uses bentonite clay for soil stabilisation, better to use Polymer instead of bentonite, for better strength of pile.

It's nice to see true hardworking ppl of Indian govt 😃😃

In pile foundation if the strata is loose, then we use bentonite or water or bentonite with water to stabilize the soil... The rock break depends on the auger tools and the capacity of the drilling rig machine. The more the length of Kelly ( long round shape tool fixed with auger) the more depth you can reached. we use casing for maintaining the drilling bore verticality, since the casing cannot break the boulders, so we need to do some pre excavation to a depth equal to casing length and then removing the boulders and back filling the same and then punching the casing. and if you don't want to do pre excavation the do pre drilling Upto a depth of casing length then do back filling and then punch the casing..

as a civil engg the white shirt engg was pretty dam good about the boring mechanism and had great knowledge about soil exploration. Bentonite slurry shall be used for stabilizing the sides of the pile borehole.

Now a days... Polymer is also used for bore stability ( avoiding cave in of soil). Although the results of polymer varies, and is not always consistent.. but bentonite is widely used all over the world and been very effective for bore stability...
