BenQ EW3280U 4K HDR Monitor Review | A Unique Multimedia Machine

Ғылым және технология

BenQ EW3280U 4K HDR Monitor | InsideTech Review.
If you’re working from home, as many of us are right now, then the need for a great monitor is perhaps more important than ever. So I thought I’d share with you my thoughts on what’s been my most valuable device that I've had in my setup over the past couple of months. This is the EW3280U, a 4K entertainment monitor from BenQ. BenQ have consistently provided great value monitors, but this particular monitor caught my attention for its HDR support and USB-C connectivity. But its USP is actually the built-in 2.1 stereo speaker system, that make this monitor one of the most unique multimedia monitors on the market.

    Thank you! Sure, so it's got a 5 ms (GtG) response time. This is low, but not "ultra-low" like a dedicated gaming monitor. For the casual gamer and for everyday use it's really good. It's about 3 times as responsive as my TV, for example, which is a high-end 2019 model. I don't think anyone will be unhappy with this - unless you're a hardcore gamer and every ms counts (but then you should be buying a gaming monitor anyway)

    Extremely useful review, thank you! I was wondering however if you could mention how bad the backlight bleed is (if i plan to watch content in a dark room)? Also, would it work well with an Xbox One S (ie: does it have FreeSynch?)?

  • @insidetechltd

    @insidetechltd

    It works well for the PS4 and it does have FreeSync - so I would expect it also works well for Xbox One S. The backlight bleed isn’t bad, but you need to stay fairly central to the monitor. If you start watching at a wide angle from the monitor, the viewing angle makes this worse. It’s not an OLED display, so you don’t get true blacks, but I don’t think there is any real issue with the backlight. I hope this helps though, let me know if you have any other questions!

    I really appreciated your in-depth approach to this. Most other reviews I found were fancy info videos about the specs from people who claim to review stuff. One question regarding HDR, so basically HDR without the "i" works without any of the brightness issues but is more like a "one style fits all content" approach? How much inferior is it compared to the HDRi profiles?

  • @insidetechltd

    @insidetechltd

    4 жыл бұрын

    Sort of. HDR is an industry term that applies to all HDR devices. The monitor needs to be able to offer a certain standard (i.e. in brightness, contrast etc) in order to be certified as an HDR monitor. HDRi is BenQ's own version of it - which has it's own colour profiles and adjusts the white balance and brightness according to your environment. I wouldn't say "HDR" is inferior, because HDR can be many different types. For example, this monitor is DisplayHDR 400 certified. There could be another HDR monitor with a higher certification (that has better contrast, higher brightness etc). It's not a 'one style fits all' approach. This monitor has a certain HDR capacity, a certain brightness, contrast and dynamic range it is able to display (just like all monitors). And then within that capacity, it offers HDRi - automatic display adjustment based on your environment. I'm sure there are other HDR monitors that offer a similar feature. So really it's just about if you like that this BenQ monitor offers preset colour profiles to choose between and that the display adapts depending on your environment (this has both pros and cons!)

    @@insidetechltd Ahh, you see, marketing had me there again haha. Thanks for the clarification! So I take it that the HDRi features can be disabled and then the monitor would display HDR content similarly to how any other standard HDR 400 monitor would?

  • @insidetechltd

    @insidetechltd

    4 жыл бұрын

    Sadly, no. This is a really important point actually, one I (tried to) make in the video. When you're viewing HDR content, you have to choose one of BenQ's HDRi modes. Whilst some of these modes can make your content look really good, the downside is that there's nothing you can do to stop BI+ (another one of their own features) from being activated. This means that the display will dim/brighten/change colours etc according to your environment - whether you want it to or not! I found this disappointing because it often meant the display dims and doesn't show off HDR in all its lovely glory. The monitor is technically capable of looking really bright and lovely, but HDRi stops this sometimes! Annoying!

  • @Superduperfreakify

    @Superduperfreakify

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@insidetechltd That's a real bummer. I was hoping that at least the "HDR Display" mode's brightness would not be dictated by the BI+ but only by the HDR content alone (since the monitor does not have local dimming and darkens the whole screen I guess). Don't know how Benq overlooked this issue. Anyways, thx for your comments on this!

    @@insidetechltd While I don't have the monitor, I was looking at reviews and found on another channel about the same problem with BI+ and the dimming. That person said that turning off HDR in Windows and leaving it on in monitor as Display HDR resolved this. Now... I can't vouch for that since I don't have it. :)

I tried playing around with the settings with all Cinema HDRi, Game HDRi and HDR itself but I can't get it right. I have tried games of NBA 2k21, Days Gone and RDR2 (ps4 version for the ps5) but getting all the same results. Do you recommend any specific/best settings for the 27" version? Thank you!

  • @insidetechltd

    @insidetechltd

    3 жыл бұрын

    Have you tried connecting up your PS4 too? And have you tried turning off HDR on both the monitor and on the PS5 menu itself - just to see whether this is causing the issue? Unfortunately, I don't have a PS5 yet so I can't test it and see what the issue is. I personally didn't make much of a change from the default settings on the monitor, but I used the Game HDRi mode most often with the PS4 and the default image quality was good. If your PS5 settings are at the default, then there could be an issue with the monitor if you really don't think it looks right. The best people to ask will be BenQ themselves, since I don't have the 27" version nor a PS5 - i'm sorry I can't help much more than that!

    No, this still wasn't HDR even using "Display HDR". Let me clarify: when you use any of the HDR modes with the HDR source, you cannot access the brightness controls manually and Display HDR mode does not display the maximum brightness available - you need the full range of maximum - minimum brightness in order to get the contrast that is needed for true HDR. So even in Display HDR mode this wasn't true HDR at all. So essentially you'd need to be playing with an HDRi mode in a brightly lit room to get the best HDR out of the monitor (which I find counterintuitive). Hope this helps!
