The Simple Symphony, Op. 4, is a work for string orchestra or string quartet by Benjamin Britten. It was written between December 1933 and February 1934 in Lowestoft, using bits of score that the composer had written for the piano as a young teenager, between 1923 and 1926. It was composed for string orchestra and received its first performance in 1934 at Stuart Hall in Norwich, with Britten conducting an amateur orchestra.
The piece is dedicated to Audrey Alston (Mrs Lincolne Sutton), Britten's viola teacher during his childhood. The piece is based on eight themes which Britten wrote during his childhood (two per movement) and for which he had a particular fondness. He completed his final draft of this piece at age twenty.

I've enjoyed many versions but never heard this, Britten's own recording. The shock is the dance like first movement ... almost Tchaikovsky in its rythms. Truly one of the great conductors ... in addition to his other God-given gifts.

In the Sentimental Saraband, I hear Bach's influence from the 2nd movement of Bach's Concerto for 2 violins. Still beautiful what Britten did with the tune and it's poignant variations. What a great homage.
Sentimental Sarabande, truly something to be played with the drips of your heartstring

Well I always preferred the second movement, it feels much more like typical Britten writing, infused with Scottish vibes and intelligent development.

Can I just say... as a violinist who has played this twice the second movement is WAY harder than it sounds. I was first chair and I struggled to keep the pizz up to tempo. RIP the rest of my section XD

It's much easier to play with the thumb, holding the violin in your lap like a mandolinist, rather than with the forefinger. It's supposed to be a Simple Piece, and I believe violin was actually taught this way in the past: Learning to pluck the tune, In Tune, so you can see the actual distance between the notes and where your fingers need to be, learning the bow movements on Open strings, then combining the two.

i feel u 😭 i plucked with 2 fingers which helped a little but the room my ensemble performed it in was super cold.. i remember one time during rehearsal our conductor made us sing the piece. had a blast doing that.
This is a delightful piece of music. I enjoy that the movements are alliteratively titled.

Yes - it could be a coincidence, but Arthur Wood's Barwick Green - the Archer's Theme - was composed in 1924 (from his "My Native Heath" suite) - 10 years BEFORE Britten released this. Arthur Wood's Barwick Green therefore may well have influenced this movement's 7-note second subject.

Not so simple to play as the title suggests, maybe it is easy listening as Benjamin Britten features on radio 2.
How old was he when he wrote this?
@mikeoas
2 жыл бұрын
20 years old, although he was probably no older than 9 years old when he originally wrote the themes he later put into this work. (The earliest referred works are dated 1923.)
Someone should have talked Britten out of the alliterative movement titles. Just nix the adjectives.
I’m in grade 6 and playing the first one for my assembly 😅 Someone help me
Composed for those between ages 9-12 lmao. Ain't nothin' simple about this work.
