Love the way the lava rock was explained short and to the point.

beneficcial bacteria does not remove nitrates, it converts ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. the nitrates are removed by plants as a nutrient or from water changes.

i had my male betta in a 29 gallon tank with 4 inch sand bed with anubias,swords and crypts, lots of plants. i raise discus in 90 gallon aquariums same set up. now i put up a 40 breeder with guppies i bought from fish boy, same set up 4 inch sand bed etc, well i put my male betta in there and he really loves being with the guppies. now i have over 100 babies, the parents and the male betta do not eat the babies i was surprised, i saved the male betta from petco he was so sad and laying on his side. well i was very happy i could save him, hate to see bettas in small tanks. sorry so long joe h navy seabee

Very informative video! Thank you. Good intro to lava rocks. If you ever do a future video, I'd love to see one on putting together lava rock ornaments with "hides" in them. I want to create one that will offer cover for my plecostamus (who is very shy) as well as my glo-fish and corydorus catfish. I have a 29 gallon, "long," tank. Thanks again!

Great info! I actually buy bags of lava rock at my local hardware store and use it as bio-media in all my filters. It's crazy cheap and works just as well as any of the high priced media that you'll find at the local pet shop. And, if I think I have more than I'll immediately need, I'll just get creative with the backyard landscaping.

@@brabbit3134 I'll just take a hammer to some of the pieces until I get the size I need. I give it all a good rinse and either put some in one of the filter chambers as is, or sometimes I'll put it in a media bag and toss it in. Either way works. Hope that helps!

Lava rock doesn’t do anything for nitrates. It does harvest beneficial bacteria to convert nitrites to nitrates but then the nitrates are removed only two ways: water changes and plants uptake

Actually you are very wrong about one point. With the rock being so porous and water being able to flow felt through it , it would grow only aerobic bacteria which is responsible for changing ammonia to nitrites and nitrites to nitrates. Anaerobic bacteria is responsible for breaking down nitrates to nitrogen gas which then leaves your system. But this is only in oxygen poor and no flow zones. So this rock won't be able to do this.

It can IF you have a real deep tank & can prevent water flow all the way at the bottom.. I like to break up lava rock and lay it at the bottom. Then cap it with a good inch and a half at least of sand... Water can still push waste through the sand but, by the time it gets to the lava rock, there little/no usable oxygen left.. So it CAN be done, just need the right conditions

Is lava rock safe to use in a betta fish tank or will they rip there fins?

So I bought a rock like this for my fish tank, I put it in and it’s floating on the surface?? Why is that and will it sink eventually?

It will sink eventually! All the little holes trap air sometimes, which can cause them to float until some water can work it’s way in there.

I haven't had any issues with the rock's texture itself and I have a veiltail, although I do know some people are hesitant to use it though.

Hey I have a question I live in Taiwan and I'm an American. Set up a 5 gallon tank and I purchase gravel and rocks with plants and it seems to just be producing a lot of acid. They're black rocks and the gravel is just natural stones that have been polished. I didn't use water change like a 100% water change. I also watched the rocks and the gravel with water thoroughly and now it's running through the tank Do you think it will decrease the acid or do I need some product?

I don't see why not! It would probably be a lot more expensive and a little trickier if you plan to heavily live plant (you'd have to tie plants to them) but as far as safety, I think it would be just fine!

I would be careful if you want substrate dwellers, only because I know some can be damaged if the rock is too sharp, which lava rock can be. However, if you don't intend on having any sub dwellers, then I'd try to purchase larger pieces and break them down, or ask the store if they have crumbs they can give/discount you to keep costs down.

Hi! I have a goldfish tank and I want to fill the background with lava rock. Is it suitable for goldfish? Because the goldfish poop a lot and the pump can't suck the poop due to the lava rock blocking the suction path. I'm still hesitating whether to spread lava rock or not? What you can do is get a canister filter I have one in my 75 gallon tropical tank it pumps 250 gallons an hour and I use a tank vacuum to clean gravel more thoroughly.

Hi. Would these rocks go mouldy slower. Was thinking of getting some for my birdbath. I clean it often but the rocks in there go mouldy so quickly.

I would think so because I haven’t noticed them get mouldy/have crazy algae growth, meanwhile I often notice it on other stuff in my tank if it gets a bit bad algae-wise. I can’t say 100% though!

Does it affect PH tho, because my seriyu stone made my PH go up super high and I Had to do a 90% water change

From what I researched, I found it isn’t known to affect pH at all. However, a few people commented that it has affected their tank a LOT - similar to your situation. So while it doesn’t affect many people, it isn’t unheard of!

Is this safe fo fancy goldfish like ranchu goldfish. I would like to buy one, but I have heard people saying it is too sharp and can hurt them.

I would assume it is safe for goldfish as I have mine with a veiltail betta right now and it's never caused him any harm! Ultimately its up to whatever you are comfortable with. :)

That's not how you pronounce lava, but other than that it's a pretty good video.

I was thinking to build a hillside in an aquarium. I'm thinking of putting lava rock in a bag to help create the hill and just pouring substrate over that. I was thinking that this would be a good idea to help get rid of nitrates and create the hill without using too much sand or gravel or whatever. What do you think?

Dear sir i hv 90 gal cichlid tank, i brought lava rock stones after washing them i put them 20 min in boiled water then kept out side to be cool properly then placed in my tank sump but after 3 or 4 days my fishes start rubbing their gills then i took out rocks and fishes became normal. Plz can u tell me what could be issue. I want to add lava rocks to remove Nitrate.

lava rock cannot remove nitrate. lava rock acts no different than any other bio media. beneficial bacteria is in your filter media and every surface of your tank, the lava rock itself is not special in this regard.

I haven’t heard anything bad about these rocks when used with bettas! You’d think they would be too sharp, but I suppose because they aren’t swimming through it, like a plant, they have low risk of getting their fins caught.

Is this rock safe for betta fins in your experience? I bought some but some people online are saying it’s too sharp

Yes. Fluval makes 1 called fluval stratum its made from volcanic rock but be careful it buffers your ph People use it for caridina shrimp because they like more acidic waters.

I actually got it from a local fish shop! You can get these a lot of specialty fish shops as well as some chain stores.
