    @@ibrahimdelice9422 It's the option to replace them if the user so desires. It's better for both an environmental perspective and financial cost too on the user end. Takes a little bit of reworking and planning to make it all work but if it's easily replaceable, less goes to a landfill. Remember it's Reduce, Reuse then Recycle. With Reusing being a key part before recycling. At least with the batteries.

    Looks awesome. Seems scary to learn columnar and I was slow to learn it, but after 6 weeks I was back over 70 wpm and after about 12 weeks back to 90 wpm but far more accurately than a staggered layout. Its way more comfortable to type on columnar layout and way easier to use arrow keys and the function layered number pad. I fly through Excel. Very excited to see it.

    I own an Ergodox EZ Glow and also more recently added a Moonlander Mark I to that, and I’m designing my own custom device that adds mouse functionality to a split ergonomic keyboard, but I still love to watch Dominique’s videos, because she’s so fun to watch! It’s hard to say without testing which layout would suit *me* best for comfort and number of keys with coding for my purposes, and I still don’t know, but I’m thinking I want a layout very similar to a cross between the Ergodox and the Moonlander, where the section that has the red arrow keys on the thumb clusters is replaced by 3 separate regular-sized keys for each, for 76 total keys, instead of the 72 keys as configured. The layout otherwise seems to fit my hands nicely.

    Hi there! You seem to be very commited to the quest of finding the perfect keyboard for you, kudos on that one, that's a commitment not everyone is willing to take to improve their workflow and health. We were also very concerned with the thumbkeys during the design phase of the Defy. We tested several solutions, shaped different keys and placed them in several positions. In the end, we created it so everyone, no matter the size od the hand, could reach at least 5 or 6 keys without effort. The remaining ones can be used for things such as changing layers or other commands you don't perform with the same frequency as you use space or alt. Also, we designed them so you can not press one by accident. That's something that always concerns us when it comes to designning keys. One final note, we already have keys that are able to move the mouse, just in case you were interested 😉 Jokes aside, hope you can find the perfect keyboard for you, even if you have to build it yourself, you have all our respect!

    @@DygmaLab hi, thanks! As for the mouse functionality I’m adding, it can’t be done purely with keys/buttons. It could be done adding a separate device in parallel with a keyboard, but that’s suboptimal, and it screams for a full integration. No existing device or kit does what I’m looking to do, or I’d take the lazier route ;) I find it interesting that the goal was to not make it fully viable for everyone to reach all of the thumb keys regularly, and while it’s possible my perception as to how many keys I find optimal will lower, I find myself needing to make compromises with 72 keys with the way I type and think. I have average-larger hands and how I bend is certainly a factor. I’m not persuaded there’s a single keyboard design that reasonably works for everyone just for size, etc. without any other considerations. My design does take the Neuron concept into the mix, as I’m using a Teensy 4.1 for this, which is absurdly over-powered, at least for prototypes. I’ll also be using a screen on it as well, because why not? 😏 There’s so much excess hardware capacity it may be the first keyboard with a boss switch and screen🤣🤣🤣

Not everyone will want to make the jump to columnar, especially if they have to use several different keyboards daily (at work, laptop keyboard in meetings/datacenter, someone else's computer,...) or share the keyboard with others. Hi, as far as I know (from reading Dygma guys answers elsewhere): - yes, you can, - the layers are stored locally on the keyboard (Neuron, to be more precise), so no need to run the software in the background - I've seen people making this suggestion, but I believe it's not implemented right now (I wouldn't be surprised if they did implement it eventually, they consistently release new updates improving their software) As of today, you can easily configure the keyboard to change the active layer in a few different ways.

    A friend of mine loves my dygma and I showed her this one. She said Dygma Raise is cuter and Defy looks like a pair of Japanese sandals (called zouri). Because of her, Defy looks like a Giant footprints to me now. Iol. I find Raise more stylish but I would love to try non-staggered keyboard as i gave up on using Raise for a num pad. I always get lost where my fingers are with staggered num pad. Anyway, have the wrist pad improved from the previous batches? I think my Dygma Raise was 2nd or 3rd one. My left pad dried up and lost adhesion because it could not lay flat on surface. Have you found a better manufacturer?

    We had some name suggestions along that same idea, Yeti and Bigfoot were among the 750+ list. You're not alone on that one 😂 Regarding the palm pads, we're trying different solutions to improve the adherence on the Defy. The palm pads in the Raise remain the same. They improved from batch 2 to 3, but they are a contentious part of the keyboard because they have to handle a lot of friction, if there's even the slightest problem on the surface, it tears, dries and loses adherence. But on the manufacturers defence, most of the units are holding ok, and if there's any problem, our customer support department will help you.

    @@DygmaLab Thanks for the update on the wrist pad. I was very disappointed about the wrist pad at the time of purchase, but when I saw somebody reviewing the very first batch comparing to the 2nd, I saw a lot of improvement. I felt better that I invested in the company that listens to customer's feedback. It would depend on the price, but I am interested in the kickstarter. Good luck, team. :)

    If I decide to get this instead of the Raise, it'll be my first columnar keyboard, so I'd like to know if gaming on a columnar keyboard feels any better or worse. The WASD keys, in particular, look like they'd be a bit awkward to press, because of the stagger, but I might be very wrong. Anyone got experience to share? And one more thing: will the built-in tenting be made of the same aluminum as the rest of the keyboard?

  • @DygmaLab

    @DygmaLab

    2 жыл бұрын

    I would say it depends on the game. For games that heavily rely on muscle memory and reactions (FPS) it might be a bit annoying, especially in the begginig. However, it should not take too much to adapt. For a MOBA or a MMORPG, it should be less of a problem, the horizontal disposition is more similar and you don't have to use as many rows as you do in shooters. In the end, it will all come down to adapting to the keyboard. If you can type, probably gaming is not an issue after a few weeks. But for sure you're going to go through some adaptation period, in which you will curse the keyboard every time you get killed 😅 It's not different than when you make a "gaming layer" in the Raise and have to relearn it. It's hard in the beggining, but it eventually pays off

My only worry when talking about this with my wife is how long will it take to setup and get used too. Not that it would stop me from getting one but I would like to know what your research has found like an honest opinion on tester trying it for the first time and on average how long did it take them. For example I'd imagine I would set this up try it while off work then while working switch to my normal keyboard until I reasonably got the new one down. Do you agree with that or disagree? Thanks!

    If you already touch type and you are used to a split keyboard (kind of like the Microsoft Ergonomic) getting used to a columnar is not too hard. For some it can be a week, others a month. But nothing crazy. If you don't touch type or have never used a split keyboard, it can be a bit more tricky, for those cases we recommend the Dygma Raise, which has a standard layout and you can start using it like a conventional keyboard (and then explore the features step by step).

    I've only got one thing in particular causing me to hesitate: for gaming on a normal keyboard (or my amazing Raise), Ctrl and Space are handled by two different fingers because they often need to be used simultaneously in certain games. However, while the Defy has that left-most row for Tab, Caps, and Shift, it doesn't have a key for Ctrl. For normal typing, that's not a big deal, but for gaming, it seems to me that having Space and Ctrl on thumb keys would become problematic for consistently controlling them simultaneously. (I'm simulating that with my Raise thumb keys to get an idea, and it's difficult/awkward to use my thumb on both like I would need to when gaming.) Any thoughts?

I have never felt any discomfort or pains in my hands or wrists, even though I've quite literally been spending 10-11 hours per day at my computer, every day, for the last 5+ years. For all intents and purposes, I cannot fathom why I would ever try a different keyboard layout or an ergonomic one. I don't feel as if I lack anything. Is there anything I'm missing? How could my experience improve with the Dygma Defy? Will the wrist pains manifest later on in life? I've basically been a computer nerd all my life, playing games and typing. Never felt any pains or wrist discomfort at all, even after a 10 hours of work or games. I'm not necessarily looking to upgrade or try out a new keyboard. @@DygmaLab The tenting kit has made the biggest improvement in her condition, so I'm glad that it's built into the Defy! Even though I won't be using the wireless feature, it's nice to know it exists just in case. However, the feature I'm most looking forward to is the columnar layout. I'm already touch-typing Dvorak, so I'm excited to map the Dvorak layout onto the columnar keyboard!

    Will you offer Nordic keycaps in the Kickstarter?

  • @DygmaLab

    @DygmaLab

    2 жыл бұрын

    To be honest, we're still deciding on the final design. We would like to offer language options, similar to the Raise. However, with the columnar layout and the fact that most of the keycaps that change from language to language are not in the keyboard, the language layouts have less impact in the Defy than in the Raise. That's what we're considering the option of just offering one default layout for all languages. The most likely outcome is that we offer the Nordic Keycaps, but we're still closing those details 😋

    I just want to say that I bought the Dygma Raise keyboard and I really felt a bit cheated. There´s no info that the layer key/keys takes a whole second for it to change layer on the keyboard. I bought mine in 2020 Cyber week / Cyber Monday and I´ve really tried to love it. I´m now buying a new one without layer keys for it being soooooo much faster to type on a larger keyboard. I give the keyboard a 3/5. If this new Dygma Defy has the same problem I´ma just face palm....

    Hi there Nick. That's not how the dual-function keys are meant to work. Well, unlees you set them up. You can change the overlay between the tap and the hold in the "prefereces menu". There, you'll be able to adjust the amount of time you have to hold a key to activate the secondary function. Hope that helps, if not, please write us to contact@dygma.com and we'll provide a solution!

I also want to point out a bug in the software when you adjust the parameters for the whole page and scroll down to press send changes to the raise all above go back to default.
