Benedict Arnold: The Untold Story of An American Hero

Benedict Arnold is considered the worst traitor in American History, but without him, it is unlikely the United States would exist today.
Arnold's achievements were overshadowed by his betrayal, but from his perspective, it was Congress that betrayed him. He was placed on their blacklist and overlooked time and time again for promotions.
Throughout the war, Arnold led the Americans to victory at the Siege of Ticonderoga, The Battle of Lake Champlain, the First Battle of Saratoga and the Second Battle of Sarota. His accomplishments allowed the Americans to win at the Siege of Boston and he led a daring invasion of Quebec.
Throughout the war, he was injured in four separate battles (Champlain, Quebec, Battle of Ridgefield, and Saratoga). His business went bankrupt while he was off fighting the war and his wife passed away. The broke Congress, refused to pay him, and instead brought him to Court Martial, ordering that he pay them vast sums of money. All the while, they overlooked him for promotions and credited others with the achievements and battles that he had won.
Eventually, every man can be pushed too far... and inevitably, Arnold would turn to the British, feeling betrayed by the nation he had suffered so much to help create.

If, Arnold had been hit in the head, instead of the leg, at the Battle of Fraser Farm(Saratoga), He, Benedict Arnold would have been a Brave Leader, who was killed in Action, leading his Men forward to Victory! Finally!...a good friend of mine is Karl J. Eschmann , who has written two books on the American Revolution, and recently a book on the bombing of North Vietnam "Linebacker" had taken me on a tour back in 2005 in Boston...one of stories he had told me was of how Arnold had be given the shaft, and although he didn't agree with Arnold's decision, he understood why...It was not because he was power hungry, or that he wanted glory, but because he had been wronged so many times...Karl is a retired LT Col and I served 27 years in the military as enlisted...I know how the system works with officers as they must constantly move ahead to further their careers and rank...this was true then (and unfortunately sometimes still true today)...what happened to Arnold is unfortunate as he gave all he could to to revolution...but in the end he felt abandoned, and lashed out with anger...I too don't agree with what he did, but I understand... - MSgt (retired) Charles Hillers

Can you do a series of videos about the British commanders and profile their personalities and their actions in the war? Then you could do another profile series about the American generals. Another topic would be unique units of the war on both sides.

Through the British agent, John Andre, and in exchange for a 6000-pound lump sum ($124,000 today), plus a brigadier generalship, and 360 pounds a year for the rest of his life, Arnold informed the British how to best take over the crucial American fort at West Point while General Washington and his top aides were there. In other words, he'd decided to betray not only his country but the one man in the American army who was kindest to him. As a lobsterback general, he led vicious raids on Virginia and then his (and my) home state of Connecticut where, after Americans surrendered at the Battle of Groton Heights, his forces massacred POWs in a place not fair from where he had grown up. And, yes, he had very legitimate gripes against the Continental Congress and various senior officers who got credit for his own heroic work before he betrayed America, but everyone serving America, from Washington down to the most common foot soldier, got shafted. Arnold was singularly venal, arrogant, and corrupt. The fact that he was America's greatest general before he went over to the other side does not justify his profound, greedy, and murderous betrayal.

I agree. In my hometown of Groton CT we live with the memory of that massacre to this day. Yes, Benedict Arnold performed many feats of bravery before he turned traitor. That does not make him a hero. He attempted to set up George Washington with a move that would've probably resulted in GWs death. This he did after Washington had gone to bat for him repeatedly on back pay and other issues. Arnold wasn't singled out for this treatment. The newly formed American government had no money and many high ranking military personnel were in the same situation. They didn't resort to treason as a remedy. He was vain, self centered, bitter and not considered a particularly pleasant person. He ended up showing his true colors and was generally despised by the British. History has judged him fairly. He really doesn't deserve some sort of revisionist history redo.
