Under Roman Law you could disinherit a natural born son but you could not disinherit an adopted son as you had made a conscious choice to adopt. This is important because God has only one begotten Son but He has many adopted sons.

I understand through memoirs of the crew from the film, the actress who was Ben Hur's companion in this scene, was actually a Countess from Italian Royalty. She won the part as an extra for this film.
