Ben Croker - Game Show 'The Master', 2006

I am proud to say that I will be forever remembered in the annals of Australian Television history, as this flawed game show was cancelled after just the very first episode went to air! Luckily I appeared on this first episode, so I got to keep my cash prizes. The contestants on the remaining 7 episodes that had been filmed, had to wait until many months later, when their episodes were eventually aired late at night on one of Channel 7's secondary channels!

This is very similar to the French format Hold on to Your Seat, but was developed independently.

According to Wikipedia, when Martin eliminated Ainsley, she said to him, "Damn you, Master!", which apparently, as far as I can see, was edited for broadcast if I'm correct.

Ben, I'm glad to see that you made it as far as you did. By the way, noting that you've been on several Australian game shows, you remind me of Chad Mosher, someone who had appeared on several American game shows. That said, I think you're Chad's Australian equivalent. Chad does have his own KZread channel if you want to check him out.

I can't see why this was such a disaster as it seemingly was but some thoughts: - In the end game the contestant should really get to play first, it seems an unfair advantage that the master goes first. Either that or the contestant gets to choose whether they go first or second. - Game play was slightly repetitive, all just quick fire questions and some rounds the master randomly chose who to eliminate, others they went through based on winnings. It needs a concrete system. - Maybe having an unestablished master just made him come across badly. If they did this now with one of the Chasers you'd at least understand why they have the persona they do.

Hi Ben, It's Pari here. I thought I might just send you a comment. I'm interested in watching Australia's Brainiest Kid 2004 and 2005 in all of these episodes. I'd also like to watch Australia's Brainiest Quiz master via KZread. I'd be interested in finding out all about quiz shows in Australia as it's been a while that I haven't been able to watch Australia's Brainiest Specials for a long time. It'd be a pleasure if you could send me a comment. I look forward to your reply. I hope to hear from you. Take care. Kind regards, Pari

They should bring 'The Chase' to Australia, and Martin Flood should be one of the Chasers!

Exactly, and to make sure that it's more similar to the British version, there should be four Chasers, three males and one female!

Have some ideas as to why this show didn't succeed: 1. This was similar to the Revenge of the Egghead show, which wasn't especially popular. As someone else said, too, The Chase was also similar, and did this concept way better. 2. The Master himself. Who was he, and why should we think about rooting for him? I know there's supposed to be gamesmanship going on here, but he seems sort of smug and unlikable. He doesn't have much of an interaction other than the final round and the choices he makes throughout the game, to where he's only talking for a maximum of 30 seconds before the game continues and he's in the background. The Beast on The Chase is more likeable in the "villain" role than that. This is because he's much more animated. 3. A few gameplay mechanic issues. First, Master broke the tie? For some reason, that didn't sit right with me. Also, during a question, Michelle buzzed in after the time up buzzer sounded, so regardless, she should've been unable to even give an answer, or incur a penalty (the "run out of time" would usually mean after you buzzed in to give an answer). But she incurred the locked out penalty anyway. I'm not sure if this is something the contestants knew could happen (she wasn't upset about it, and it didn't hurt her in the long run), but before that...how did that make any sense? Why did she incur a penalty even when time was up to even buzz in? Nothing like this was ever explained in the rules that were said on air (remember what "if you run out of time" usually means in a game show, so they should've explained this better if this meant something different). So if someone can explain what happened here, that would be awesome. Finally, The Master went first in the final round? Again, not exactly the best way to go about a game like this, not to mention that the way they played the final round made the game grind to a halt after how fast paced everything else was. 4. The biggest sin: Who would think about putting up the entire money to go for the million in that scenario? They have at least 40k guaranteed at that final round (plus whatever they won in the front game). The all or nothing if they go for the entire million makes the rewards not worth the risk if you know you're leaving with at least 40k. As FOR that risk, why does the winner have to do all or nothing if those that she beat got to take home their winnings regardless of what the outcome was? Maybe it was the 50k that she won by getting to the final round, but even if she doesn't win when only risking the minimum bet, she's gaining some of the money back by what she won earlier. This was a game mechanic that wasn't thought through, and had the potential to have the winner of the game among the contestants be the ultimate loser because she chose to go for the top prize against a brainiac. Sorry for the wall of text, but I had a few gripes with how this show went about. Maybe the "villain" wasn't TOO unlikeable, but he was just too detached from the front game other than some small things (the "Master gets to pick the category" thing was a nice touch, I will admit). It was too much like other shows, and one of them had much better mechanics, and a rule that didn't particularly make sense in where they were putting it into effect.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the final round is directly copied from another fine quizzer, BBC's "The Weakest Link." (I seem to recall reading about an Oz version of "Link" at some point, correct me if I'm wrong.). It certainly is an exciting tension-building exercise in trivia toughness, but I gotta call a spade a spade.
