Man, that flyer they show at 6:41 for the July 4th 1963 show at the Paramount in NYC is just unreal. Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson, Lloyd Price, and Wilson Pickett... all on the same bill for five bucks. Talk about a time travel show!

I was reading the morning paper on the bus to work....and saw a small article that made my heart sink. I was a big Otis fan, "These Arms Of Mine" was and still is my fav Otis song.....still have all my LPs. I guess I was 21 when he died, 76 now. Thx so much!

Jim Morrison did an a Capella tribute to Otis Redding on the soft parade album just before the Runn’in Blue track. The Doors and Otis played the Whiskey a Go Go in LA playing on the same bill. Imagine watching those 2 legendary acts in the same nights. He was only 26 but Otis will never forgotten. What a voice, so handsome, so talented and so charismatic. 🙏❤️🎵.x

So many GREAT stars have died young in plane/car crashes all that talent lost forever so very sad ..

What's REALLY sad is that nearly 100% of them were WARNED not to fly (due to bad weather). If ONLY they had listened...or taken a commercial flight. This includes Otis, Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly(with The Big Bopper and Richie Valens)...among others. It was so cold that day that ICE on the wings most likely caused the crash of Otis' plane.

I didn't know their was a survivor you never heard about him for whatever reason Rest in Peace Ben.

Thank you for posting this. It’s crazy to hear he was the only one who couldn’t swim and wasn’t wearing his seatbelt, yet he was the only one that survived.

Certain folks have a natural buoyancy to float up no matter what. Likewise, that cold water can paralyze your muscles so whether you can swim has no bearing.

​@Cb88x Respectfully, I disagree. I don't think that there's anything wrong with questioning God, as long as it's done with respect. There are so many, many things beyond our understanding, so I don't see any harm in asking for answers in situations that we just don't understand.

There are always signs, we get signs whether we pay attention or not but we get signs

Love this. I was only 12 yrs. old when Otis Redding passed away. Never got to see him perform live. History and records are so important!

True, the battery was not the cause of the crash...but God was using the weak battery to try and warn them it was not safe to fly that route at this time...but they went ahead anyway and look what happened, they iced up and went into the water...I'm not saying God was involved in this way or not...thats the opinion of the writer of the comment you responded to...I'm just trying to explain it incase it was misunderstood, that's all.

@@davidmoser3535 Their SECOND warning was from the airport: "DO NOT FLY BECAUSE THE WEATHER IS BAD." So...they chance it and their wings ice over and they crash. Can't say that they were NOT warned! It's happened to so many artists...Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly(with the Big Bopper and Richie Valens)...among many others. It's called "get there-itis." Very sad.

There are a lot of great male soul singers who absolutely deserve their flowers in perpetuity but to me the two that were most undeniably singular monolithic talents were Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. No one else has or ever will naturally replicate the sound of their singing voices, both are and will remain utterly unique! Unfortunately they also share the tragic similarity of having both died far too young. They had so many songs left to sing...

RIP.....BIG O.....I saw this the day after his death. I was stationed at Fort Hancock, D Battery, in Hazlet N J. Jeff Kutash and the Upbeat dancers....I was heartbroken watching him knowing what had happened

I remember I was in Homer Louisiana on vacation when I first head Sitting On The Dock of The Bay I loved it immediately my Great Grandfather who I'd never seen buy a record before kept playing it over and over again I didn't realize he was sad because Otis had died

Hello ma Cauley my name is Leo green I was on the show with you and Otis in Cleveland Ohio I was singing with a group I don't know if you recall we will call the Imperial wonders we were on that show at Leo's Casino I never forget that because I remember one of the members I don't know if it was you but somebody came out and we were standing outside in front of Leo's Casino and he said he looked up in the sky and said something is not right that was a Saturday night after that show we did one show with y'all I don't know if you remember my group it was five of us we would like pattern ourselves after the Temptations I was one of the lead singers in the group but said this to many people that we were the last act that work with y'all that night before all this died on the plane so I was reaching out to you maybe this can get to the gentleman who interviewed you but I remember that my heart was broken we woke up the next morning it was and we were wild we were so hurt about that just want you to know that that my condolences goes out to the family and to you and to those families of the Bar-Kays who passed away I'm here in Las Vegas now living in Las Vegas anyone would like to reach me you can reach out to me I was a big fan of Otis Redding he was one of the singers that I looked up to but again it's great to know it was a blessing for you to be alive it wasn't your time to go hope all is well peace

It’s amazing to see this video. My grandmother was a HUGE Otis fan. She played him on 8-track in her car and on LPs on her record player, so of course I love his music. She used to talk about how devastated she was when she heard he’d died in a plane crash. I stream Otis Redding in my car, so decades later my kids love his music too. The tradition continues!

Can you imagine how many more lovely songs we would have had if he had lived to middle age? We lost several artists very young but thankfully their recordings are timeless.

I remember Booker T & MG’s they are from Houston ❤ what I love Band members could play really really good and they all got along. So sad and tragic 😢 some members of the band was hesitant I was always told follow first mind 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 RIP to all who parishad & Ben

Booker T. & The MGs are a Memphis band actually. The only member that wasn't 100% born and raised there IIRC was Steve Cropper, who is a fellow Missourian by birth, but even he moved there from the Ozarks of Southern Missouri with his family at nine. Easy mistake to make though, those guys toured like crazy all over the country in the sixties and built enough of a live following that every show must have felt like a hometown gig. Super talented musicians and one of my favorite backing bands ever, they could make anybody fronting them absolutely shine on stage or in studio, not to take anything away from what a great act they were in their own right. Just absolute legends, especially the Booker, Steve, Duck Dunn, and Al Jackson line up, so good!

Otis was was truly a super talent, when he toured Europe he took the performance over the top every night. His death broke millions of hearts , I hear Dock of the Bay and tear up. It all comes back , where I was and how shocking he died so tragically by drowning. Music has never been the same since we lost Otis . A piece of our innocents gone .

Otis Redding had a great commanding singing voice like non other. As pointed out at the age of 26 year’s old, Ottis sang with conviction and genuine heart filled delivery of every performance. It is abundantly clear Ottis possessed a high level of control and Emotional intelligence like no other before him and since him. My first awareness of Ottis Redding was listening to Sitting on the Dock of the Bay via radio. My life has been so enriched by just this One song. Excellent content, Thanks

Ronnie Caldwell, the keyboard player in the original Bar-Kays, was white. So was Ron Gorden (still alive), the keyboard player in the re-formed Bar-Kays from 1968 to 1970. Gorden went on to work in Stax's graphics department, where he helped design the iconic fold-out album cover for Isaac Hayes' "Black Moses".
