    This video literally saved me. I’ve always wanted to sing with that power, but when following the instructions of other people, ended up just shouting and it was straining my voice. Thankfully I was aware of this so I stopped and I learned about the mixed voice. Not completely understood it until now and wow🥳

    OMG no a healthy belt isn't supposed to strain or hurt. Belting is not pure chest voice. Pure chest voice pulled on the high notes hurts. Belting doesn't. I mean when done correctly of course, which a lot of people don't do and then say belting is bad lol anyway

    Hey! Yes, there sure is. Let me simplify it for you. All mixed voice is, is adding the middle register (the pharynx) to the chest and or head voice. The pharynx is naturally very whiny, and when you mix it with chest voice, you get that twang sound.

However, now I see that I can do that, I just never knew how to get there healthily. Instead of straining my voice. I also now see why after trying to sing high notes, my throat killed. It was because I was reaching them in an unhealthy way, and I was straining my voice to the extent that it gave up. All your tips help, thanks

    Hi Whel. Try sliding through your range on a "Wah," like a baby crying. Make it really whiny. Whiny can be mistaken for nasally, but it really means that you are singing in a great mix voice. Then later, add lyrics with that same whiny tone and you will see that you don't actually sound nasally, you sound sharp, loud and commercial- all good things.

  • @1108vocalstudio

    Yes. There are certain vowels that allow us to access the pharyngeal sound easier than others. Vowels like "ee" are good (and annoying!) exercises to start with. After using this vowel we might move to a "meh" and even "muh" as we transition toward application.

    Yeah i agree with you, it's saffer to use mixed voice, in opera they say that belting it's aggressive for the voice, like you just said it, it's like driving fast in you're car with the first gear, though some people say that belting can be mixed voice with a dominant chest voice, what do you think about it? also belting isn´t pulling you're larynx high? just like you did in the video

  • @1108vocalstudio

    Hey! Yes, mixed voice can have mostly chest voice. You can play with the ratios of each register as much as you want. As long as you have any of the middle register coming through (the pharynx), It is considered mixed voice.

    Wow. Your vowels for reALity and CAN'T were more pure than Hayley's. She really punches the attack (especially on her /k/ and /g/) and does more of a KENT than CAN'T. Is it her strong use of pharyngeal that makes it sound so resonant and twangy without going too bright? I love her voice because she can do a very punk sound without getting shouty or splatty, so I'm trying to emulate some of her more efficacious modifications in my mix (it's hit or miss with a male voice, though). Without throwing anyone under the bus, she did change vocal coaches and her stamina increased despite carrying more power up higher. Some called her previous technique problematic (for her style, not inherently... also complicated by her poor warm-up habits by her own admission) mostly because she "bridged too early" for the sound she goes for, so her mixed D5-F#5 used to get a bit shouty and crack. Knowing that she has the same power in her D5-F#5 that she used to have about three semitones lower, why do some people insist that bridging "later" is inherently harmful when she can do it now, sing higher with resonance that used to be reserved for relatively lower notes, and can do world tours without cancelling shows and ending up in doctors offices like she used to suffer through with trying to bring her old technique up higher? Is there not a safe way to bring more chest into the mix just a few notes higher?

    Bagell Doughnuts On their latest album and the performances since, she can bring her belting up higher than she could, and in a safe manner. But she's really new to it, having just rehab'd her voice from bad habits, so she doesn't always do it live. She's been focusing on her lower chest voice, which is desperately needed for safe supported high belts. She's smoothing it out, so over all she's not doing some of the same "exciting" things she used to do (that were destroying her voice) as often. But when she does, she's got that singer's PING that everyone should strive for.

  • @kerycktotebag8164

    Yea, she used to not really work her lower range, so her lower chest range wasn't the greatest. But, in spite of that, she'd continue to push upward on her belting range. Putting the cart before the horse, but she's got it figured out now. She's learning to bridge later. and even her extension of her belting isn't the limits of what's safe apparently. Think of dude singers like classic rock artists (weed out the ones that you find out developed nodules on their vocal cords!). They're bridging hella late

    Huh... I guess I didn't realize bc of the gap between albums. I think she was at the worst vocal health during the tours for Brand New Eyes I'd like to think the rehab period accounts for the lack of belting, and that she's working the lower parts of her range and we'll be hearing those higher belts soon enough. When she was on-point with it before, it sounded really cool (like, Decode, but that was after BNE)

    How do you have like no audible break?? I feel like I have a decent mixed voice(although it doesn't sound as chesty as I'd like), but you can always tell when I switch into a mixed resonance because the sound is so much different from my chest voice. My mixed voice feels strong and sustained, but it still doesn't really sound chesty enough for me to be able to sing songs like "Wizard and I" without you knowing I'm not in that iconic chest-sounding "belt" voice. Also, it feels like I can do two different kinds of mixed voice: one where I stay in what feels like chest voice with some nasality and one where I switch to what feels more like head voice with some nasality. I know this vid is really old, but can anyone help me?

    Daniela Carrera It actually may sound a little nasal. Since you do not want to be using plainly your chest voice (that will be called belting), when you use your mixed voice, you are basically transitioning between where you put your notes. lower notes to the chest voice and slowly slide it up to your head voice - in between the chest and the head is the nose so that explains why you may have thought that singing mixed means having a nasal voice but that's not true, it simply means singing from your nose but not making a nasal sound on purpose (unless the song style requires you to do so)

    Hi Oliver. This is very common. The middle of our voice is where our break is. You are probably pulling chest voice up too high in that area without using mix. Slide through your range quietly on a very whiny "wah", like a baby crying. This will put you into your middle register, taking the pressure off the chest voice. I hope this helps!

    There is another way, by strengthening your diaphragm through diaphragmatic breathing exercises, that's the secret to loud powerful big belts safely and without strain. It takes a lot of patience which most people don't have which is what separates the good from the great singers.

    Does this work to all kind of singers? You know because, I'm a soprano who came here from classical singing with a more "coloratura" sound and I definitely don't have a connection between my head voice and chest voice, they sound too different. And when I sing pop and stuff, if I belt the notes out with chest voice it works but sounds forced, and if I try to have that mixed voice I sound extremely nasal. So is that something that can be fixed or just me being untalented?

    Hey! Thanks for the message. Singing in mixed voice is actually way easier than belting in chest voice. All you have to do is quietly slide through your range on a "wah" like a baby crying. Have you ever heard a baby cry for hours and not get hoarse? Once you can get a whiny sound, just add a layer of vocal cord muscle, (volume) and so on.

  • @ToadetteToad1

    Sikiiaflamz22 You only ever need voice types in classical singing, really. In Pop, it's like 'Oh, well this is my range and this is what I can do with my voice.' Not 'I can only sing soft and high because I am a Soprano' (or whatever). But, you're probably a Soprano. But don't let that determine what you can and can't do. Sing how you want to because that is your own individual voice. If you want to master singing with lovely vibrato like Ellie Goulding (an example), then do that. You're still singing as yourself but you're singing as what you define to be what you want to do with your voice, rather than what people tell you can do with your voice. Makes any sense? :)

    Sounds like you are going into head voice, which is good, it'll take your range higher, much like Hayley. Really train your breathing patterns, much like a baby, or when you are laying down to sleep... if you put your hand just below your rib cage while laying down, you'll feel your belly expand up and down when you breathe. That's how you should breathe when you sing, NOT raise-the-shoulders breathing like you would at the doctors office. If you learn to control your breathing and diaphragm muscles, your head voice will start to match your chest/mixed voice. Open your mouth bigger/wider (depending on the word sung) too, it'll feel cartoony or awkward at first, but you need a place for the head voice to resonate, which is your soft pallet, kinda like when you yawn it'll move up and resonate more when you sing, thus creating a fuller sound. Try it out and see. Practice... it'll be tricky, but soon it'll turn into a muscle memory and it'll come naturally.

    Hi Betty, I know the feeling! Try to keep in mind--"light and right is always better than strong and wrong." This means you shouldn't force the notes in your chest voice, this will only make it harder to reach the higher notes. You need to find your mix voice, this will allow those transitions to run smoothly. When you are first practicing, try sliding up and down slowly. As soon as you feel your voice is about to transition to its next bridge, back off on the volume.

    Hi Sophie, I just came to ask how powerful is muscle memory. Whenever I'm ill or having a cold, I'm afraid to stop singing in fears of losing my voice.

  • @pziolk

    @pziolk

    You can sing when you are ill/have a cold. As long as your larynx is okay (a sore throat is not an ill larynx yet), you still can sings. Of course it's better not to give 100% at ill time. Going back to your question, you're not gonna "loose it" after couple days of not singing, maybe you're gonna have to exercise a little more to remind the placement, but it's not that hard.

    Yes. You are transitioning into head only. Try adding a cry sound like a baby. Do this on a "Wah". This will put you into your middle register so that you can blend the 2 registers.

    My problem is that my siren/wah/meow-sound doesn't sound like that, and higher notes don't feel much effortless with those sounds, I still feel like straining. But I guess I just have to keep trying till I find my mixed voice, maybe I'm still doing something wrong.

  • @1108vocalstudio

    Hi Nuga. You are probably pushing the sound too much. Start as quiet as you can. Try practicing a whiny sound on a "wah", and make it really whiny and really quiet. After you succeed, ad 1 layer of volume and build from there.

    Belting and mixing are technically the same. You can pull chest voice up, you create a chest dominant mix, you can balance chest and head, then you have a balanced mix, if more head voice is more dominant than chest voice, then you have a head dominant mix. But still, you are belting. Belting isn’t a register, it’s just a term. Mixed Voice is a register. You have Chest Voice, Mixed Voice (where you mix chest and head voice), and Head Voice.

  • @1108vocalstudio

    @1108vocalstudio

    Hi Leo. The way I see it is that a chest dominant mix is mixed voice and belting is being in chest voice only, pulling chest up too high, causing the vocal cords to slam together or break open. I don't believe that belting is a register either, but a term for pulling chest voice up higher than it should go without adding the middle register (being in mix). Mixed voice is not a register. We have 3 registers. Chest, pharyngeal and head. Mixed voice is when you mix or blend the registers together... Chest and pharyngeal, head and pharyngeal or all 3 registers at the same time. The only thing you can't mix is head and chest without the pharyngeal resonator because chest and head are not connected. The pharynx is in the middle of them. I know I wrote a lot, but does this all make sense? I'm happy to answer any questions!

    that exercise is good to access the mix voice but when u did it you were only mixing pharyngeal, nasal and head resonance but not chest, but when you sang paramore you were mixing with all 4 of them, so you need to explain that to pleople because they will truly believe that they will achieve a full mix voice just by doing this excercise and they wont. There is comment by an user "Anzor Khawaj: I just went into falsetto", thats what im talking about They will need some other exercises to really feel how a full mix voice should be done, like compression exercises for example. I know this video is from 2013 but if you do a new one put a link so they can fully understand mix voice, this is a nice start but lacks some necessary information. Nice voice by the way.

    Thanks for your input. I try to keep my videos short and simple. I have a lot of different videos on mixed voice that explain it in different ways. I'm not sure what you mean by mixing nasal. We only have 3 registers. Chest, pharyngeal and head. Those are the only registers you can mix. My first siren was a head and pharyngeal mix and the siren I did after the song was a chest and pharyngeal mix. Either way, if a person does a siren using the pharyngeal resonator, they will be in mixed voice. I wasn't wanting to get more complicated than that because I don't want to confuse people who are just finding this information. Thanks again for your input!

    Please, belting and mixed voice are two different things. Of course you have to perform belting in a healthy way but that's not mixing. Just listen to Christina Aguilera, what she use is not mixed voice, it's pure belting.

  • @james-so8rz

    @james-so8rz

    Anto If I'm not mistaken, Christina does used mix voice, but her's is very chest dominant. That along with her raising her larynx makes her strain. Mixing is the healthiest way to belt though. For example, a Korean singer Sohyang is able to belt up to C#6 with resonance and support. She needs to mix her voice to be able to belt that high healthily. And people naturally start mixing above F4, so any belting above that is in mixed voice, just varying ratios of chest voice to head voice. And belting and mixed voice go hand in hand, do they not? How are they different?

    Noooope sorry. Hayley Williams belts lol. That's why she has nodes...she ruined her voice. Like Demi Lovato. They're shouters. But that's what their sound is and it's pretty damn impressive. Anybody can mix and sound like a little girl (ahem Ariana Grande). If you can teach people how to belt properly and well, you are a good vocal teacher in my book.
