LYRICS:
Blood soaked devastation, transcends beyond imagination,
Killin’ one of her creations.
Sethe saw the schoolteacher’s hat, get back,
Grab the saw, and she’s ready to attack.
In schoolteacher’s mind, there was no crime,
Just a dead baby lost on his own dime.
He came from Kentucky lucky to have found her,
Sethe saw, fear started to surround her.
She couldn’t send her baby back, she couldn’t do it,
Not the chains again, she could not go through it,
She saw the four white men, and she knew it,
Take the saw, take the shovel nothin’ to it.
In a land that is home to the brave,
She’d return with her children to be enslaved,
There is nothing she could think of more depraved,
So she murdered ‘cause it was her way to save.
Back in the present Stamp tells Paul D,
18 years ago Sethe killed her baby.
Shows him a picture from a news clip he cut out,
Paul D denies it, says “That ain’t her mouth.”
But when he confronts her, Sethe won’t deny the truth,
Not ashamed of when she was a mother in her youth,
“Thick love” is real love, nothin’ else would cut it,
The door back to the dungeon was opened and Sethe shut it.
“You got two feet, not four,” Paul D says to her,
And that was it, he seems to lose respect for her.
Takes his hat, doesn’t even say goodbye,
So long, Sethe says, with those all-black eyes.
Paul D is gone, Stamp Paid feels guilty,
For breakin’ the relationship and makin’ it filthy,
And Baby Suggs is disillusioned from the whites,
So she crawled into bed, let her Maker hit the lights.
CHORUS:
Inspired by a story that’s true
It’s a shake up of all you ever knew.
It’s a wake up to look into the past,
If we don’t, the haunting will last.
Post Civil War still Black people dying,
Stamp Paid thinks about lynching with heavy sighing,
Askin’ “What are these people? Tell me Lord Jesus”
A white can steal a Black person’s breath, just as he pleases.
Back in time we learn of schoolteacher’s education,
Comparin’ Sethe to animals on occasion,
So in a scene with Halle, talking to her man,
We see the seed, the beginning of a plan
To escape, but back at 124,
Sethe’s got her family and doesn’t want nothing more.
Beloved is my daughter, she is mine, she came back,
My love is tough and thick, like a full-blown attack,
Memories, memories, Sethe’s mother
Hanged on a tree, yes another life smothered,
Denver thinks she has to protect Beloved from her mama,
You never know when Sethe will explode into the drama.
CHORUS:
Inspired by a story that’s true
It’s a shake up of all you ever knew.
It’s a wake up to look into the past,
If we don’t, the haunting will last.
