Bellevue man captures rare backyard encounter with mother black bear and cub on video

A Bellevue man spotted a black bear and her young cub in his backyard and caught the whole encounter on video.
Michael Tokarchek said he often has wildlife visitors explore his property, but seeing two black bears up close and personal was a first for this animal lover.
Tokarchek said the cub returned to his backyard on Friday and was searching for food in the bird feeders.
Tokarchek said the bears seemed curious and didn't seem to mind his cat who was meowing from behind the sliding glass door.

@@josephshields2922 I know he's not in Yellowstone. Have you ever heard of a metaphor? The bears were grubbing for food, and one of them was literally lying on the deck next to the food supply while the appetizer was meowing pitifully in the background. The bears will make repeated forays to this food supply if it's available, and if it suddenly runs out after they get used to it, who do you think is next? The fool filming the scene, that's who. My logger buddy was sleeping in his camper when a bear ripped the door off and tried to get inside and eat him. Luckily for him, he had brought his chainsaw inside to prevent it from being stolen. When he fired it up, the bear took off. Another time my brother had a bear break in his kitchen and chow down a jar of jelly that he had left on the counter. Bears are omnivores, which means that they will eat just about anything, including humans. So don't try to lecture me about bird feeders when they are a potential food source as well. Yogi and Boo Boo will be back...lol P.S. I wasn't trying to find fault, I was just trying to warn him of the danger of leaving food out where bears frequent. Like living right up against the woods...😊

Black bears do not attack in defense of cubs. The only bears that do are brown bears. Black bears live in totally different environments, and have never needed to defend cubs, so they do not have the trait of attacking people or other animals in defense of cubs. They will attack over food, invading space etc,, but not over their cubs. That is why you will see black bears walk right up to crowds of people with their cubs,, and you'd never see a brown bear do that. There has never ever ever ever been a report of an attack on a human by a black bear in defense of cubs, not one. If a black bear attacks it will be because it is starving, you scared it, invaded its space etc. Defense f cubs is a trait only brown bears have.

My line is that I’m missing bear and cougar, but regularly have deer (as many as 7), squirrels, raccoons, opossums, skunks, owls, a couple dozen varieties of birds, coyotes, and a river otter in the neighboring creek. It’s a regular Disney movie out there! We did have a bear reported in the area a week or two ago, but it only made it to within a half mile (as far as I know!).

That must be total idiot who I saw 2 years ago on YT. I don't know how it has gone since I was there, but his behavior outraged me. And in the comments everyone was like "Oooh! So cute!" I tried to explain how he was signing their death certificates, but they couldn't get what I was saying. I was outnumbered by people who know nothing about bears and defended him, so after several hours I just had to give up! I sure hope that I, and a few others who also were just horrified by his behavior, got through to a few people. Even without food, petting the cubs teaches them to not fear people, when they do need to be scared of people. Too many bears that are not scared end up getting shot, for being "nuisance bears" and going after garbage. It's not their fault, but they are the ones to die. The people at that channel didn't believe me when I said that bears are shot just because they have no fear of people. But they are shot just for that, because those bears do end up in conflicts, while the ones that are scared don't go into towns unless they are starving. (But a starving bear is a huge danger!) This TV station has a duty to tell people about the dangers to people and to bears of all kinds of human contact, even just visual and from a distance, and especially of food of any kind left out. That includes bird feeders. Shame on them for not saying what happens to bears that get used to people or are fed! The only way to deal with bears is to immediately scare them away with loud noise and/or bear spray.

Bear sightings aren't uncommon in Washington; there is probably more wilderness/forest than human-populated areas. I had a momma bear and 2 cubs in my yard once. Momma chased the cubs up a tree about 15 ft from my house, then ran into the woods to keep watch. The Fish/Wildlife folks who came said the bears found a food source nearby. I later found out the bears had been inside my neighbors garage eating birdfeed! The rangers kept watch - to make sure no one got hurt - momma bear came back about 3 hrs later and they all ran back into the woods.

There's hikers who have died because of meeting a hand-fed bear who has learned that you get food from humans, and have taken that food out of their flesh. So not only do you put yourself at risk, you may have inadvertently caused someone else a horrible misadventure. There's also the sad reality of the situation where the bear has to be put down as they've been taught to be a threat because of people feeding them, it's all around a horrifying situation. Feed your pets inside. Your dog or cat could be the bears' meal one day when you don't feed the bears.

He’s probably dumb enough to let his cat roam too. Now that the bears know there’s food out, they will be back and any pets or humans are at risk. Dumb move, and illegal! And why is the news station glorifying this stupidity!!!!

I have said this a thousand times: if I’m paying that kind of money for a home away from the perils, dirt, crime, and grime of the city, I DAMN SURE had better be able to relax in my backyard and take a nap. All these bears and pumas in this country are making this a scary proposition. I might as well stay in the gotdamned city.
