Bell Siphon Troubleshooting & Explanation | Aquaponics 101

G'Day Folks. Troubleshooting bell siphon issues can be very frustrating & is one of the most common questions I get from folks just starting out in aquaponics. In the video, I also explain the components in the siphon & how they work for those still a bit mystified by their operation.
Hope the video helps you some & your Aquaponics is booming.
Cheers all. 🐟 🌱🍅

    You are the reason I decided to take the plunge and give aquaponics a shot. You have simplified a lot of extremely valuable information for us and have put the hard yards in when it comes to the trial and error side of things. Even though I already have a thriving aquaponics system (thanks to you) I have decided to purchase your online information package on retrieve. Your knowledge is worth more than the $10 I spent on your online guide and I hope you keep up the hard work and keep producing amazing content to help people in the community move forward with more sustainable ways of living. You are an inspiration.

    Your videos continue to be perfect, thank you so much! I'd been running aquaponics for abt a year thanks to you, swapped to hydro last weekend and moved the system outside. Siphon wasn't shutting off, messed with it for a couple days, found your video and bam! 5 minutes later I had my new drain pipe angled down instead of slightly up and its working perfectly. Very good explanation. Even though I use the breather tube on mine, it's not always necessary. As Rob shows, when the siphon breaks the air is able to come back through the drain pipe. This is perfectly fine if draining right below and the piping is short. On my systems I tend to have much longer drain lines since my reservoirs are not under the media beds. This makes it difficult to get air back into the bell so the breather tube allows for an easy way to break the siphon 👍💧💦

    Great explanation Rob. 👍 I'll be running a fairly long drain on the potato bed so will be using a snorkel in that one as well. At the moment all the bells have snorkels on them as I made a number up just for the video. Even have one similar to yours but it was a tad too ugly to show in the video. 😉 Hope you & yours are doing well mate & thanks again for letting me use your videos, I really appreciate it.👍 Cheers. ☕☕

    Hi Rob, purchased the video package was great to have it all sorted and easier to work through. I am testing the bell siphon in a grow bed setup, however is the bell siphon meant to be free seated and floating? If take the outer cap up the bell floats up and thats done with the 50mm pipe. Got great flow rate, run off etc just cant get it to break

  • @RobsAquaponics

    @RobsAquaponics

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey MCT. It sounds like the drain may be running slightly uphill & has some water in it preventing the air from leaving the bell chamber as the bed fills. Once that is made to run level or slightly downhill you shouldn't have the floating bell issue & it may help the siphon to break as well. Let me know if that helps any. Just to let you know that if you ask the question through the guide I will see them a lot sooner as I check them a few times a day. 👍

    Hey folks. I don't know of any natives that will breed freely in a tank environment sorry. There are loads of hatcheries around that sell fingerlings for a few bob each & that's what most folks will use. Murray cod are OK for aquaponics but are a bit slow to grow out from what I've seen in others systems. I have been told that yellow belly takes about 18 months to get to plate size which is about the same for silver perch as well. 👍 Hope that helps you out some.

    Hi Rob, thanks for a great video. I have a couple of questions. I use the bottom section of the bottle to ensure no air leaks, it works but am wondering if the taper at the top will act as an accelerator? My other question is instead of a large grow bed my bell syphon feeds into 110mm pvc pipes with cup cut outs. It takes about 8 minutes to drain and about 13 mins to resyphon, so there is only about 5 mins of no flow. Is this a problem? My plants are alive but not growing...

  • @RobsAquaponics

    @RobsAquaponics

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Rupert. I'm not sure about the taper would have much effect on the overall operation of the siphon.👍 Is there any way you could block the discharge end of the pipe so the water backs up a bit? If you did there would always be a small amount of water in the base and it would act a bit like a DWC bed. The pipe would need to be fairly level to have enough water to reach the inlet end. Hope that helps some.

    Hu hello, I'm from Germany! it's getting unfortunately a bit cold here, to set up aquaponic systems like that (without somekind of greenhouse) I have two questions: 1. I learned from different sources that its better for the water to use tanks, vessels, pipes ... out of an mineral material or at least with an mineralic surface. I know the common pipes are much convenient, but if i would subbornly insist on using materials mimicking more natural circumstances, do you have any ideas what i could use to meet my demands. and 2nd, I would find it very cool to have a series of grow beds to recycle gray water for later use in the garden or even in the aquaponic system itself. Could you create a tutorial how to build this, from grease trap, to what kind of plants to utilize to filter the water, media, perhaps lava or biochar... (just an idea), that would be awesome and amazing. I loved watching your vid after getting up. It's very inspiring

  • @RobsAquaponics

    Hey Jokingvictim. The most inert material that you could use would be stainless steel, which is way out of reach price-wise for 95% of folks I'd say. Concrete tanks need to be sealed & the food grade products used would be artificial, just like plastics. We don't have grease traps here. About the closest we have would be the greywater from the kitchen, bathroom (not toilet) & shower. We're not really set up to harvest them here at out place but would like to have a go at setting a system up on our future property down the line.

    That would depend on the type of fish you use Connor. You will find that the plants will probably suffer though as you'll just be circulating the same nutrients round & round the system. I like to use the siphon to raise & lower the water level to help the plant roots & bacteria get as much O2s as they Can. Have seen many constant height/overflow beds work well but have also seen a lot with dead spots once plants roots start to inhibit the water flow. I have no issue with raft beds either but keep in mind that you'll need decent fine solids removal to keep them out of the beds as well as a stand alone biofilter to process the waste from the fish.

    My siphon was cycling well air lock forming and breaking. There is a long pipe to sump but the bell has a snorkel. The air lock is now forming BUT the bed is failing to drain. The water goes down an inch or so but then holds in place. So it no longer drains fast enough. It doesn’t get to the bottom to allow the air lock to break. I can assure you the water flow rate is quite slow so it isn’t over filling. Any ideas?

    Normally it's a inflow issue if the outflow is keeping pace with the inflow. How low do you have to turn the inlet flow to get the siphon to break Dewey?

    @@RobsAquaponics thanks so much for the reply. I seem to have rectified the problem by lifting the bell siphon up a bit. It appears that once the airlock was formed the vacuum applied to the bell siphon sucked the bell down so firmly it slowed the water out. I tried adding additional holes to the base of the bell and this improved things somewhat but it needed clear space under the bell to allow the airlock to break. It is all cycling just fine now.

    @@RobsAquaponics i guess it's an engineering challenge bc we see growers so the time, dismayed bc their bell siphon got stuck either on drain or fill, causing damage to plants and pumps and floors. It's a simple design, sure, but it's got some reliability flaws. You can argue if you like, or you can watch other youtube videos, read fb groups and hydro forums, etc .. I prefer to have a pump on a timer plumbed thru the bottom, and a drain pipe higher up in case my timer ever failed and left the pump running, which never happened to me yet, but I'm ready for if/when it does.

The only reason i can think of is that aquaponic growers need to keep a pump on constantly and they might not want a second pump? But straight hydro growers rubbing ebb and flow, they can save a lot of headaches and energy by just running a checkless pump on a timer. (Plus a lot of plants don't want to be that wet...)
