"Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young
Charms" is a popular song written by the Irish
poet Thomas Moore, setting new lyrics to a
traditional Irish air that can be traced back into
the 18th century
In 1811, Moore married the beautiful actress
Elizabeth Dyke. It's said that while Moore was
away working in Bermuda, Elizabeth contracted
smallpox, which disfigured her face.
When Moore returned, she was reluctant to let
him see her in her changed state for fear he
would no longer love her. Moore responded by
going to his study and sitting down to write. A
few hours later, he knocked on his wife's door
and read the poem he had just written : Believe
Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms.
Thou wouldst still be adored
Encouraged by his words that he loved her
regardless of her looks, she allowed him back
into her room. They remained together for the
rest of their lives.
There is no reliable written evidence that things
happened exactly this way but it's a story that
has been widely accepted by fans who are
devoted to the song and the emotions it
expresses.

랜드의 시인 토마스 무어가 가사를 썼고 18세기
부터 불려온 전통적인 아일랜드의 곡조에 맞추어
대중가요가 되었다
1811년 무어는 아름다운 여배우 엘리자베쓰 다이
크와 결혼하였다. 전해지는 이야기는 무어가 집
에 있는 그녀와 떨어져 버뮤다에 일하는 동안 엘
리자베쓰는 천연두에 걸리고 그녀의 얼굴은 추하
게 된다.
무어가 집에 돌아 왔을 때 그녀는 무어에게 그녀의
얼굴을 보이는 걸 꺼려한다. 왜냐면 그녀의 얼굴
상태가 추하게 변한걸 무어가 보게되면 더이상 그
녀룰 사랑하지 않을 거란 걱정 때문이었다.
그런 사실을 알게된 무어는 곧바로 그의 서재로 가
서 시를 쓰기 시작한다. 몇시간 후에 무어는 그의
아내방을 노크하고 그가 방금 쓴 시를 읽어준다:
나를 믿어주오, 만일 당신의 그 모든 젊은 매력이
변한다 할지라도, 그래도 난 당신을 사모할 거에요
지금 이순간처럼...
그녀의 겉 모습에 상관없이 그녀를 사랑한다는 그
의 말에 힘을 얻어 , 그녀는 그를 그녀의 방으로 들
어오게 한다. 그들은 나머지 여생을 함께 한다.
이런 일이 있었다는 신뢰할 만한 문서적인 증거는
없지만 이 이야기는 이 노래를 사랑하고 감정을
표현하는 팬들에게 널리 받아드려졌다.
