🇷🇸 Belgrade, Serbia | Free Walking Tour, Currency, Food, Saint Sava
Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or just looking for a unique travel experience, Belgrade, Serbia has something for everyone. I’m taking you on a journey to see some of Belgrade’s iconic sites like the jaw dropping Temple of Saint Sava + imposing Kalemegdan Fortress. I’m sharing, as a Canadian, what it’s like to spend in Serbia’s currency, the dinar, + what a travel math game this was (math class was failing me!)

@@yourtravelfriendanna Well, as a fellow Canuck who has dual Serbian and Canadian citizenship, born, raised and educated in Belgrade and then moved in Canada, I agree completely with above written comment and advice. History and different cultural influences through centuries always played a big role in the countries located on the Balkan peninsula or in South Eastern Europe, including my home country Serbia and hometown Beograd (Belgrade). While colloquially, they do call St Sava's a cathedral in English, St Michael's is actually Belgrade's cathedral church. We call it Saborna in Serbian, it's the one located right across the street from the Building of the Patriarchate, in Kosancicev Venac district. The very definition of a cathedral church is the one where the seat of the local bishopric is. Also, disregard some of the nasty comments I have seen here, the country has only been opening up to tourists in the past decade or so and we do have a bittersweet relationship with Westerners since the early 1990s. I appreciate your honesty and a somewhat cute awkwardness with which you presented Belgrade's history. You come from a different region, from the other side of the world and it's quite normal you're not familiar with every bit of history taking place here. The comprehension of time and space is already quite different in Europe compared to the Americas; now add the Balkans into the mix and you're in for a bumpy ride. Anyway, as long as you keep an open mind and continue presenting with that proverbial grain of salt, you should be good to go. P.S. I like the Ray-Bans, pity they're covering something ever nicer underneath. Have fun in the Balkans and a safe trip.

You're entitled to your opinion but please respect that part of visiting a new destination is doing my best to absorb what I can of history, present day life, culture and understand as much as possible. My experience of western education does not go into fine detail Serbian history, however the reverse could be said about Canadian history for Eastern European schools. When did you film this? Obviously not this year, that walkway under the street was renovated recently. You have similar underpass walkways in basically every big European city, its not always entrance to the metro. Belgrade also have several underground stations, but for city railway. That is TEMPLE, not cathedral (name used only in Western christianity). That mosque is definitely not among communist style buildings since its located in the Old town area, where 90% of buildings is built in pre-ww2 era.

Dušan Stefan Nemanjić, the Strong, was the son of King Stefan Dečanski, king of Serbia from 1331. He was crowned emperor of the Serbs, Greeks and Arbanas in Skopje in 1346. During his reign, Serbia was at the height of its power, stretching from the Gulf of Corinth in the south to the Danube in the north and from the Adriatic in the west to the Aegean Sea in the east. He regulated relations in the state with a collection of laws (Dušan's Code), which was published in 1349 and supplemented in 1354, and which historians consider the constitution of the then feudal Serbian state He mysteriously died in full force at the age of 45.

Hey, I did get a chance to try some of the traditional dishes, it wasn't covered in this video. In addition I chose to eat vegetarian...which has led me to love Ajvar 🤤 I hope you can understand by visiting is my chance to learn more about the culture vs. just "sledding in Canada" (which you're illiterate to misunderstand we don't all do)!
You are a gorgeous girl and real wedding material. I could easily spend the rest of my life with you. Welcome to Belgrade and Serbia and enjoy in best food and night-life in the world!

Không thích những video kiểu này, toàn là xem mặt người nói không quen biết chứ không phải xem phong cảnh, nói không ngừng và mặt chiếm gần hết clip

I know this is so random and silly but I have to say that you have such cute nose! 😊 I don't know why but I always found a type of nose like yours soooo sexy 😊 -Just an ordinary Serbian guy who just felt like giving you a compliment, that's all 😄

There is no Ottoman influence in Belgrade. Ottomans came from Asia and were picking up food and customs, even clothing from other nations. They didn't bring anything.

Do you think it'd be accurate to say when they arrived, they influenced the architecture + culture?
@Ana-bw7gm

@@yourtravelfriendanna No, they didn't because they didn't bring anything. They invaded and placed those that collect taxes (new term) and they used to come back when people were uprising, when they were steeling children and when they went to invade further Europe. If you see the architecture, it is all European and Byzantine (Eastern Roman). They forced Islam on some people mostly in Bosnia. They also took women. That was the case not only in Serbia but other Balkan countries as well as Ukraine and Russia. Current Turks are mixture of various nations. Bulgaria forced Muslims to go to Turkey, Yugoslavia allowed them to go to Turkey and cancelled their Yugoslav passports and naturalization. According to some reports there are about 10,000,000.00 Serbian people that went to live to Turkey or were forcibly taken during the ottomans such as about 3,000 families to construct and maintain sewer (I think this is well documented). They preserved their language and largely their customs and now they have all adopted Islam as their religion. I am not sure whether their church still exists in Istanbul. As a result of Ottoman rule and them taking taxes, Serbs developed farms to raise pigs because Ottomans didn't eat pork meat. They became the biggest suppliers of pork meat to Europe.

@@teamacio9043 Ottomans came came from Asia, where do you see Asian food? Turkik tribes were adopting food, clothing and words from people they were coming across. Some words were used by Serbs to describe that Ottomans were there ore went through or that they took over some building or region. Doesn't mean they created it. Stop making up.
No joke, you look like a Serbian woman, I can easily imagine you in national costume. The others I saw in Serbia do not match the energy or appearance. This is probably your country without even knowing it. Best regards.

God damn it! You Americans should stop presenting Serbia as Beograd alone... go to Krusevac, Kraljevo, Pozarevac, make a left turn at Lajkovac, go down to Smederevo, Pristina and then come around and visit Sombor, Subotica and Apatin... Now, you've seen Serbia. 😄
