“The pull of home,” I had to rewind and hear it again, the way Kenneth Branagh described and spoke of it. I don’t know how much most Irish people know about Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans own struggles. But there are a fair amount of similarities. The pull he spoke of, talk to any Boricua anywhere in the world. We are Boricua first and foremost and our country, our home, our patria, subconsciously or consciously is always on our minds. Boricua hasta en la luna (Puerto Rican even on the moon.. ie, forever, always). I cannot wait to see this film.

You'll search hard to find more wonderful people than in Belfast - and that's unrelated to politics. I see a truly brilliant future. I truly love visiting there -it has it all, fun, music, food, culture, deep history and in an hour or two Bushmills, Giants Causeway....I prefer to Dublin, hope not to shock or dispirit but more Irish than Dublin.

Well folks- went to se the latest movie- Belfast. A story set in Belfast in the very early days of the Troubles. let me warn you all now. Do not waste your time or money. Do not go see it. I was raised in the north of Ireland at the very start of the Troubles- the conflict that ignited in the late 60's. Or more accurately put- re-ignited in the north of Ireland. This movie was so bad, so fake, so divorced from reality and so frankly and clumsily pro-British propaganda it was appalling, to put it mildly. Where to begin? Well for starters the "streets" of Belfast were amazingly clean, houses well painted and virtually no graffiti anywhere- political or otherwise. Which happens nowhere in any poor working class neighborhood anywhere in the world, never mind Belfast in the start of the troubles. The police and the British Army were portrayed as benevolent and helpful, trying to help the locals. Not a mention of the death squads that both the local police- the RUC and British Military Intelligence ran. The nice, older chaps running the barricades were lovely, if slightly nosey chaps. Not the actual hooded and armed members of the UDA and UVF- the aforementioned British organized and armed death squads. The movie itself was set in East Belfast, which is predominantly Protestant, or pro-British Loyalist. Which then leads to the "cause" of the Troubles. Multiple obsessive talks of religion and what makes Protestants and Catholics "different." To anyone who has even a minimum understanding of the conflict- you already know that the Troubles was a not "Religious Tribal" war although that has always been the standard British propaganda narrative. Now to add to this- the actors. The VAST majority of the actors were not Irish- they were English. The Grandmother of the main character was Judy Dench- as in Lady Judy Dench. The father- the other adults were mostly English, trying to put on very bad Belfast accents. Watching the scene were "Grannie" Judy Dench tell her son to leave Ireland for the sake of the kids was disgusting to put it mildly. At once scene I lost it completely. Where the very helpful fellows in the British Army wee helping bring people to their houses. Didn't mention the "helpful fellows in the Army driving folks to Castlereagh, the notorious torture center run by the police and British Military Intelligence. I guess that little fact was overlooked. Related to this was the scenes of the police- the RUC driving to folks homes to deliver bad news of a death in the family. Also related was the scene where the one bad Protestant fellow was was attempting to force the Father of the main character (the young 10 year old, he will be mentioned in a minute) into "helping good decent Protestants" to drive out (Ethnically cleanse is the correct term but.. ) the "others". In other words help with the pogroms. He was surrounded by British Army and police and his weapon was taken away. In reality- well documented reality- British Military Intelligence and the police were arming the death squads. Now into the main character. He was a young boy- about 10 years old. Now the conflict itself was only covered in very minimal way and certainly not with any political context at all. No- the movie itself was about his trials and dramas. At school but mainly on how he could get the attention of that cute girl he liked. So on top of the lies and blatant pro-British propaganda of the movie, the "central story" was frankly dumb, sickly sweet (not in a good way either) and completely BORING. Do not go see this movie. Do not waste your time or your money. I took the hit for you. Trust me. Stay away. 0 Comments

Sound just like a bitter bigot, nobody had clean hands here, NOBODY, I grew up at exactly the same time through the 60s and 70s and no community was any different to the other, so your, "were the only victims here" doesn't wash, we were all victims of this dark time, both protestants and catholics, so please, no white washing of our history.....
