Bela Fleck is one of the greatest musicians in the world. He's been nominated for 35 grammy awards in 12 different catagories.

What I love about this composition is the part right after the bass sax duel, when Victor plucked in a tribute to Jaco Pastorius, the first guy to take the bass to the level of a solo instrument...

As others have mentioned, that's a bassoon. The guy playing it is Paul Hanson. I've run into him live a couple of times with the Flecktones or with Taylor Eigsti, and I have of all things an autographed stuffed hippo on my desk with the Flecktones' and his signatures on it from a show 20 years ago. At one of the Taylor Eigsti shows, he dropped a ~10-minute bassoon solo that had every single person there, on stage or in the audience, in complete awe. I don't know if there are other jazz bassoonists out there but there can't be many!

There is a guy in a blue hat way off in the stage left corner. That's Future Man, the brother of the bass player, Victor Wooten. The snare drum and other percussion you are hearing are from him. He usually plays the Drumotar, an electric guitar modified to play various percussion and other sounds. I was looking for him through the whole video but they didn't show him until near the end.

If you liked that from Bella Fleck, you should check out his song Cheeseballs in Cowtown with Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas. Bela is a virtuoso, multi instrumentalist, but his primary love is Banjo. What you saw him playing in that video is an electric banjo. Sam Bush is one of the best Mandolin players in the planet and same goes for Jerry Douglas on his Dobro. Vic Wooten is an incredible bassist and his brother Future Man invented his instrument called a Drumitar, it has hundreds of not thousands of different percussion sounds and others sounds as well, all by touching, or tapping spots on the instrument.

I'm so glad to see people reacting to the flecktones!! I've been a fan since I was fifteen years old(20 years ago) and had my brain exploded by their unbelievable playing. If you want hear genuine God level musicianship, I recommend the song Shocktime. It is truly incredible. The rest of the Live at the Quick show is amazing too.

OMG ! I subscribed for Pentatonix and saw this today. When I was working in Houston in the late 80's I had a co-worker who had been a Deadhead in college and used to follow the Dead making and trading bootleg tapes of the live shows. When the Dead stopped touring much he found other groups with a similar vibe, including Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and Dave Grisman's various Dawg Music projects -- groups that played instruments really well, improvised a lot and never played a song the same way twice. I went with him to a small club in Houston when the Flecktones came through (it was just Bela and the Wooten brothers with a guest English horn player). I followed them for years but I thought the Flecktones broke up and Bela was doing more traditional bluegrass. I guess I was wrong.

Ruth, Bela was among a fairly large community of players that are/ were over the TOP. This got going really fast when Bela joined New Grass Revival in the early 1980's. Now New Grass Revival was formed in the early 1970's. They played with others too. Like Leon Russell for several years and toured with the Grateful Dead. Anyway pull up Strength In Numbers from the Lonesome Pine Specials Series. It's on KZread. Also check out Cosmic Hippo that I posted above.
