Being Present With Empathy In Dog Training

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

What three words would you and your dog pick to describe your dog training? I’d like to think my dogs pick the words fun, kind and clear. The late Wayne Dyer influenced my dog training mantra, and I believe that our dogs are doing the absolute best they can with the education we’ve given them in the environment that we are asking them to perform in. If you embrace this, it’s the gateway to having not only the best relationship with your dog but to the best trained dog you have ever had.
In the episode you'll hear:
• How being present for your dog will flow on to the way you show up to the world.
• Why our dogs are a mirror of what we are teaching them.
• About the questions we can ask ourselves if our dogs do something we don't want.
• The reason to bring mindfulness to dog training.
• Why to be present for the impact you have in the life of your dog.
• About observing when your dog focuses on you.
• Knowing if we want a dog in our life or want the best life for our dog.
• How dogs learn despite the training methodology.
• How the right approach to training lets dogs be brilliant.
• About inspiring great responses for dog training to be magical.

Quite literally probably the most influential podcast you've created. Thank you. I'm grateful beyond words to be present to receive your expertise, support, understanding, and compassion. You align with all the mindfulness spiritual teachers that are on the same mission: to raise our collective consciousness. Peace.

I’ve been dogless for nearly 8yrs now. Yet here I am gobbling up these lessons, 2-3 daily. I found your podcasts here on KZread & quickly realized I needed to start at the beginning. I am planning on a puppy, hopefully in the fall & I have always loved training, especially in the form of games. But your inclusion of mindfulness, kindness, gentle yet firm empathy for dog & human are the keys to my deep connection to your message. I appreciate you & your team for what you are doing here. You are part of the greatest changes in my overall perspective these days. I imagine I’m not the only one. Thank you for being you & expressing you with such clarity. 💛

Crate games is the most fantastic way of teaching anything. I love it and it has become a way of life in our house! I wish all the breeders, dog owners or dog trainers will start anyone's dog training journey with it. What could be better than giving your dog its own autonomy to make the right choice? I certainly hope that my dogs describe our play time as Fun, Clear and Kind :)

Hello Susan- Your question about "what 3 words" made me stop and think (while on my walk listening to this podcast) - literally stop walking for a second. :) I don't normally go to KZread (speaking of "impact") but came here to comment. I have followed you and have been in your classes for over 4 years and your explanation about crate games in this podcast (to me) is the best I have heard yet. It finally hit home what is so "great" about Crate Games. You may have explained it this way in the past and I just didn't get it but this time for some reason BAM!! - Environment... Impact with human vs food.. (I was expecting to hear you say "transfer of value"- This is true here right?...) inspiring dog to offer what we want... SUPER GOOD.. Thank you!!

Thank you Susan. Your approach has irrevocably changed my relationship with my dog, and myself. It made my attempted practice of mindfulness so much more natural and organic. It has made me so much more patient and so much kinder to myself (I was always kind to my dog, but maybe not at clear as I am now, thanks to you and Recallers. My Moshi literally changed my life because he not only taught me so much about dogs, but also about me. Who I am, how I treat myself, what’s important to me. I do find it far more difficult to apply the mantra of “we’re doing the best we can with the training we’ve been given in the environment we’re being asked to perform” to humans…maybe because I work with a lot of narcissists in my career. So empathy doesn’t come as easily. But it certainly has changed how I think about the people I work with. So even if empathy is hard in the moment, I can find it later and access it more easily the next time. Thank you, spiritual gangster 👊🏼

Thank you Susan!!! Because of you I think my puppy does think I am fun and kind… and I think he knows I do my best to be clear 🙃. We are so lucky to have found you!!! One area that I am avoiding ( because I know don’t know how to be clear) is a tuck sit. Luckily I’ve had you and Recallers guiding me from just a few months after I got my puppy, so the concept of shaping vs luring has been present for us. In fact now if I ever try to lure, it’s like his brain shuts off and he gets confused, so I don’t anymore. I use a target stick and perch, like you recommended, to teach many behaviors, but I’m not yet able to use a nose target or perch to teach a tuck sit. When I ask Iroh to sit in RZ he rocks back and there’s a lot of space between us and I pat my leg and he’ll scooch forward to RZ but there’s a lot of yawning on his end when we do this, so I feel like he’s frustrated …therefore I’m avoiding it 😅🙈🐶. I would love to hear your thoughts on how you teach this (and a down from stand instead of through sit). You’re an inspiration as alway. Thanks again ❤️

I love your approach, especially that it's based in science and practice. I still haven't figured out my 10months old puppy's ways. On some days she is way way better than I could ever expect or imagine and on others she's just disconnected and naughty. That relates to real life situations as well as nosework, that we practice. I wish I could find a perfect formula of factors that would make her willing to cooperate more often. So my 3 words would be:fun, trust and engagement. Lots of love Susan 💓

I wish I could find an in person trainer in my community that uses Susan's approach. I find a lot of benefit to in person training. However, when I took my new puppy, who has significant fear issues, to a training class it was all luring, leash corrections and verbal corrections. Needless to say, I did not go back

Thank you Susan~ your uplifting and loving approach to dog training is one that I totally agree with. I’ve been watching your podcasts , did Homeschool the dog and crate games since May this year. My Border Collie ‘Molly” 15 months old, responds well to your methodology. My only ongoing issues with her is keeping her from being reactive to bikes and joggers and other dogs while on our walk path or anywhere that she sees them. I have watched and studied and analyzed all your podcast referring to that. I just can’t seem to keep her from doing this any suggestions?

Hi Susan - heres is some feedback! I adopted my a 5.5 year old my rescue Staffie/Am staffie cross from a rescue centre and heard from the staff (who all loved him) that no family wanted him as he was an army tank on the leash and did not respond to any commands...7 weeks later and I have learned so much - and have realised i have a fantastic dog that learns so fast because of your training videos and learning how he learns! Thanks so much Susan!
