I forgot to mention that some of us were taunted with the idea that we would never be able to get a 'decent' job if we insist looking like this. First, there's no such thing as an 'incident' job. All jobs are needed and deserve the same respect. And second, don't let anything stop you from trying. We can prove them wrong. Our clothes don't define our professionalism.

I love your point about the term "discrimination." It's a good reminder to not take ourselves too seriously and maintain perspective.

I'm a cosmetologist .I can dress as I choose .. black pants, dresses ,shirts , boots ,shoes.. I love my job!!

What is wrong with how you look? You are a beautiful young woman, you are obviously clean and neat, and well spoken, you'd be an asset to any company!

It’s all about respecting different spaces and their standards. Just like you wouldn’t wear jeans to a formal wedding, certain professional spaces have their dress code and we need to respect that. Ofherbsandaltars made a really poignant video similar to this one I recommend everyone check out. More KZreadrs and goth role models need to be talking about this stuff!!!

I’m a gay goth and I understand how it is. Of course most people don’t understand that men can suffer from body or image issues as much as women. I went through a period years ago where I thought I had to be extremely thin to get a job. However, when I got hired, I realized that nobody is perfect and everyone has their own flaws.

Edit: you are cute as a button as usual, and I love your kitty As some one who has alternative style, I am extremely lucky that I can wear for the most part what I want. If I do know my corporate office heads are coming down I do dress a bit more normal. I interviewed for my job with bright purple hair, and my piercings in. I am a claims manger and have been for 4 years now. I really love it!

For my last interviews I also went with colorful hair and facial piercings, but it probably has to do with your resume, the more experience you have the more confident you are and you have proof on paper that you are a good asset. It's always trickier when you're younger and starting out, it's when people give you less chances and when your appearance matters the most to you 😅😅

Nice video for those that are looking to get into the working field. Years ago it used to bother me when office colleagues would question my all black wardrobe but now that I'm older I dont care because this is who I am.

Hay, newbie here, Very well put, at work I just turn up still looking goth, but no extreme make up, I don't have any facial peircings at the moment or wild colored hair. I feel alot of discrimination is aimed at alternative looking personalitys from employers and it needs to be more accepted, even if your toned down. But we don't whine about it, unlike some you know the ones right 😉

Eh aquele ditado: better safe than sorry... Entre escolher usar um chocker enorme de Spike e argola e ter um emprego... Chega a ser insano pensar que pra alguém manter o Chocker seria a escolha correta x.x mais do que privilégio, ao meu ver. Quando fala em tattoo fica mais difícil, mas se a maioria das coisas de composição do estilo são maquiagem, acessórios, roupas... Não tem motivo pra não dar um "tone down", usar uma camiseta preta básica e garantir as contas pagas. Tudo que é temporário realmente não importa muito... Mas eu fico preocupada com a questão da tattoo pq daí realmente a gente se limita, se priva de aproveitar a liberdade com o próprio corpo, de escolher tatuar algo ou algum lugar específico por conta de não ser bem visto e correr riscos como não ter um emprego. Tattoos, bodymods no geral, língua bifurcada, alargadores, eyeball tattoo... Terão coisas que teremos que nos privar mesmo... em função da sociedade, pra viver nela, ainda que julgado. Expressões de estilo não são necessárias, a gente continua sendo quem é mesmo sem toda a indumentária ou modificações, sim. Importante se agarrar nisso, pq quanto pior parece se encaixar na sociedade, mais a gente quer se mudar pra se diferenciar dela. A gente vê com isso que nem mesmo como indivíduos somos donos das nossas próprias vidas. Mas pelo menos de alguns momentos, né? Hehe vamos aproveita-los

THANK YOU im starting training for my first job in 4 days and i know ill show up less punk than usual but thanks for your tips. im really only worried about when i get there from after school and i dress pretty punk at school so i might have to change at work. its a food line kind of like subway so it shouldnt matter that much

I'm really curious to see how much I'm going to have to tone down for work. I'm studying computer science and will graduate in 1,5 years, then I'm going to be on the job market... Hoping the types of jobs I'll get are less strict since it won't involve customer interaction or anything, just sitting at a computer writing code pretty much, but depending on who the employers are they might have some arbitrary rules - and even if they don't have rules they might just take you less seriously so I'll be cautious in the beginning

Great video. I don't work in the public so I could do my makeup and nails however I want, but we do have to wear a specific uniform at my job so that does limit me.
