Being Gay In Deeply Conservative China | Foreign Correspondent

While Australia says ‘yes’, the country with more gay people than most says an implacable ‘no’.
But in China, a determined group of young men and women just won’t take no for an answer.
About 800 special invitees are piling aboard a cruise ship to witness the marriages of nine LGBT couples in a brazen statement against China’s law and traditional family values.
But there’s a hitch. Even though shipboard marriages have no legal standing in China, authorities are edgy about this “immoral” cruise and the defiance it represents. They move to stop the ship sailing, threatening to blow up months of planning.

Something that might surprise many: in ancient China, homosexuality was more often than not thought of as no big deal. Imperial court officials and even members of the emperor's family were openly homosexual. It wasn't until Western influence in the 19th and 20th Centuries that homosexuality became frowned upon en masse.

The good thing about living in a democratic country is that you can actually take the government to court and win. m8 even before same sex marriage was legalised in 2017, gay rights in australia still ranked as one of the top in the world. and i would guess that the reason why it took us so long to legislate it was because civil unions provided same sex with almost all of the rights married couples had, such the difference boiled down to a label - such that there was never a real *need* for it

At least I dont expect everything can change from 0 to 1 immediately. The process is long but we can see the improvement. Being bisexual is a little tricky. Do you, or will you, choose marry the opposite sex or someone of the same sex? Ideally, as a bisexual, you should feel free to marry the one you love most, male or female, but in reality, choosing the opposite sex as the partner may give others and yourself an impression that you're implicitly forced to do so due to social pressure. Yes, choosing a partner of the same sex is brave for the bisexual but sometimes you may not be sure if you doing so is out of true love or just a show of protest.

All on a surprise trip with a multitude of strangers. We don't even know if the conversation was had with this woman about pronouns. It's also probable that she doesn't considering she can not read and is very poor. A step forward, hand in hand with the person you love, is better than no step at all. Western countries that now have laws for LGBT rights and protections have been going through the same developments as those now taking place in China. Fake marriages, hidden identities, rejections by one's own parents and relatives were, have been and still are common. The improved situation in the West is still recent and the social stigma has not disappeared but is very much alive even in bigger cities. LGBT people can now follow their identities more freely and their rights are better protected but conservative ideas, discriminations, homophobia, fear of violence, hate talk, conversion therapies etc. still exist and in come cases have even increased, maybe due to more visibility of the LGBT people. So China may lag behind in this matter but the situation is far from perfect in Western countries. Nothing can be taken for granted and there's still lots of work left to do.

Álefe Carvalho - sure, heterosexual people should do better at taking care of their children and not “abandoned them“ as you say but that doesn’t mean gay people are better at handling children. They can’t abandon their children because they cannot have any of their own children the last time I checked. The non-abandonment of someone else’s children is just a fantasy World of thinking that it could somehow be normal or natural. And yes if you look at nature, you will see massive amounts of complexity all pointing to a creator/designer. If you believe there is no God, you have more faith and believing that then Christians do and believing that there is a God. You know those pesky facts like this massive planet in this massive universe being an inch closer to the sun and it’s toast, an inch further away from the Sun and it’s an iceberg like the planet Hoth. And other complexities such as the human eyeball, the relationship between plants air the sun and photosynthesis, mathematics, physics, engineering… The odds of all of those systems and knowledge and intelligence all coming together by chance is much greater than a tornado ripping through a junkyard and assembling an operable 747 airplane, with perfect paint job and all. So it’s sheer fantasy to believe that there is no God. It’s OK, you can talk to him about it when you get there after you die. We all will have that chance. And we all will confessed that he is God.

I think attitudes in China are changing, but there is a difference in expectation for people in rural or farming areas. Also the one child policy puts pressure on the child to do well. I really loved the scenes with the family counseling, I felt like those were sympathetic but appealing to Jesse’s parents’ parental responsibilities. What do we owe our children? To grow in the sunshine. But also you cannot change someone’s beliefs so quickly. The disappointment will hurt the child, but it is a reality. I hope there will be more acceptance soon

14:27 The father on the stage talking into the microphone should be a stand-up comedian! His son is evidently clever as well. Here is a more accurate and in-depth translation of his words: My son told me he's gay on Nov 1, 2016. I became quite angry at that moment. There was rage burning inside of me. We talked for two hours and I smoked five packs of cigarettes. I only used the lighter once for the first cigarette. Just one cigarette after another, non-stop. I said to him: "there is no other way but for you to change." He replied: "The bent can't be straight, and the straight can't be bent." Wow, that word, the first time I had ever heard of it! I asked him have you forgotten what industry your dad works in? The Steel Industry! I can weld (bend) any bent steel straight! He replied to me: "I am made of steel, and I can be bent but never broken!" The son's last reply is so important in my opinion and I didn't see it translated in the subtitles. The father had actually quoted ”I can be broken but never bent", which is a common Chinese four-character slang to express strong will and the idea of not giving in, thus someone would rather be hurt and broken, be snapped in half like a rigid piece of chalk, than bend over their body to give in, like a piece of soft bamboo. It certainly works this way as well if that's indeed what the son had said. However, I found based on the context, the son might have switched "broken" and "bent" so that he might be bent (be gay) but he would never be broken by whatever forceful external means. Coincidentally, the son followed his father's reference to steel and claimed that he's made of steel. While steel is often considered tough and strong, it's largely used for its elasticity and plasticity. It is totally on point that steel can be easily bent but very hard to break! I don't know if I have over-analyzed his words, but I'd like to think there was some powerful wordplay.

Eh, I don't know much about the Asian culture, but its very stereotypical to believe that conservatives will disapprove of homosexuals. In fact, in America at least, it's one of the biggest lies of liberal news media and it's caused horrible harassment towards conservatives who don't deserve it at all. I grew up in Texas, I am gay. I never met a single person who caused me any discomfort or harassed me for it. I wasn't open to anyone until I was about 15, but still, 3 years more of living there and no one harassed me. My best friend is a devout Christian, who lives his life by the Bible, who is one of those Texans that Liberals assume will shoot a black dude. That's not the case at all, and the fact of the matter is NO ONE is like that. When I told him, he said he doesn't like the idea of me being gay, and he went on a religious rant, but he ended it with a whole "But you are a brother to me, and God forgives", etc... He is one of the most conservative people I know and HE doesn't even hate gays. Not a single person I know does. I know many who don't agree with it, and probably wouldn't support it as a bill, but I know not one person who would harass you, try to change you, or exclude you from things for it. The entire philosophy behind being "conservative" is to adopt new ideas, but keep the ones you know there too. It's a way to hold your values while integrating with new ones. But liberals have this idea that "conservative" means hate hate hate. The fact of the matter is that statistically, and in practice, there are more extreme liberals who hate on people, than there are conservatives who hate on people. How do I know this? I grew up in the deep south, and lived in San Diego and Hoboken, NJ as well on my own. Its just the truth. The side that says that conservatives hate everything, is actually the side that hates everything. You can watch all these videos online of conservatives saying "I'd be open to having a nice debate, as long as it's civil. I'd be friends with a liberal yea, I just don't want to be forced into beliefs", where then they ask the same questions to a liberal and they say "no I would never be friends with a conservative. They're horrible and nazis". Going back to what I said above, being conservative is entirely about adopting new values while keeping your own. If you've ever been cooking; have you ever heard someone say "Be liberal with the salt"? That means add a lot of it to where it may be overpowering. Ever heard "Be conservative with the salt"? That means add a bit so you have the flavor but it doesn't cover up everything else as well. That's how you should look at politics in general. Conservatives want to adopt new flavors, while keeping some of their own and integrating them. The Liberals want to add their flavors to the matter to top the old flavors. In some aspects the conservative idea is the best, in some the liberal idea is the best. But even when it comes to homosexuality, its best to adopt the conservative approach. Because its A. a smoother transition instead of it just popping up in a minute, B. it causes much less outrage from other people because they know what they want is finally accepted (i.e homosexuality), but it gives people time to adjust, and C. it allows everyone to have their own beliefs saved at the same time. Would you like it if change just hit you in the face, or would you rather it gradually arrive? That's the conservative philosophy. So back to the main point given the bit of history I provided, you see now why people being "Conservative" is by NO means a way of saying "unwilling to accept new values and are full of hate" like liberal media says. That's arguably how it is with liberals actually. The unwillingness to accept the some people still have their own values and they don't want to change their entire lifestyle in a second, which is natural as humans. I wish people would stop harassing conservatives by highlighting stereotypes. It has put my family in danger since they don't live in Texas in anymore, because people hear they are conservative and they threaten them. My mother has a cross sticker on her rear bumper, her car has been vadalized at the King Soopers many times, as well as my father's Jeep being shot at - funny since they now live in a hugely gun strict city. But my parents have never once said anything bad to any liberal let alone shoot at them for a cross sticker on a bumper and then call them nazis. And if anyone tries to counter argue this with me, I want to emphasize what I said above, that I have experience in not only the deep south - where I grew up - but also in extremely blue North. I am ready to debate anything I get thrown in the comments responding to this, but keep it civil please.

@@ConnorGibbsAK thank you for your insightful comment. I don't really know if statistically the liberals happen to score higher on hate crimes than conservatives (a link to a source would go a long way), but I do actually kind of object to one of your other points, in which you touched on making change slow vs. fast regarding the acceptance of homosexuality. I first of all would like to know what exactly you mean by making changes "slow" regarding these issues, because if you're talking about legal endorsement of gay rights and changes in sex education I personally don't think slowing those down would make LGBT people's lives any easier at the moment. The reason why homophobia exists is because, as stated at the beginning of this video, a huge proportion of the global population is still hugely uneducated on how it works. Whether or not the elected government is conservative, these are issues that need to be tackled by ammending the education systems immediately to include a major change in the way sexuality is approached at schools. When it comes to legislation, the passing of bills and even constitutional reforms to protect the rights of LGBT people would definitely come a long way in handling hate crimes, bullying and oppression. Otherwise how long until people finally get fully recognised as human beings and not just "gays"? How many more people will have to be bullied, murdered and silenced over time? If you're specificially referring to generational culture and religion, though, that's another story. I'd appreciate you clarifying your points a little further.

Traditionally, homosexuality was accepted - there were parts of China that had wedding rites for homosexual couples, and there was even a term for a male "daughter-in-law". Lesbian couples could adopt children. It was the advent of Christianity that brought about intolerance. So much for western freedom.

For people, they think that one must get married, have kids, buy house and car, that's the norm of life. And being gay is the opposite. There’s been many cases of people being fired from jobs of all sorts because of their sexual orientation. As a Chinese, I personally support homosexual marriage, so do many of my friends. But for the older generations, this is not a subject they can suddenly comprehend and accept... Even in societies that are much more open about homosexuality, like America and France, I still met people who are denied by their family. Hopefully, things will change when the young generations become the mainstream of their society.

I was at the Shangai Pride in the M50 creativity district this year. It was very colourful and peaceful. People of all ages painted rainbows on their faces. Some were handing out flyers, sweets and stickers. The place was very crowded. In fact there is a huge LGBTQ+ community in Shanghai. However, most of the members are very rich and well educated. But for the rest, being gay is not that accepted which is really sad.

That’s their child shouldn’t you only care about your child’s happiness and not someone else’s. I will never understand smh.
