I remember when I first went to Vietnam with my natural Afro and I had so many Vietnamese that wanted to touch my hair. Then one lady pointed to a dragon god and the tourist lady told me that my hair resembled one of their gods. I was so flabbergasted and amazed. I love Vietnam!!!

In Vietnam foreigners can often be treated like celebs because many Vietnamese can be really curious (in a friendly way) about ppl who are different from us no matter the race. I'm sorry if it feels like an invasion of privacy or disrespect sometimes

Most of Vietnamese are curious about people and things just like a young child who just learning about everything and Evy in their environment. I love that you all have good experience and have lots of respect for you. As human being we all deserve to have friends and it should not discriminate for any reasons. Love like a child would love another friend they just met.

No you're not disrespecting . In fact. I think Vietnam are probably the only best Asian country that is original and authentic human. Just from my interactions with two different Vietnamese

Hey just make sure when you guys tell you fam in the states to fix up the stores they own here in black neighborhoods.

I love to see black Americans abroad being successful and enjoying life. I was in the military for twenty years. For my first duty station, I had a choice between Virginia and Japan. My black friends were telling me to go to VA and telling me horror stories about Japan. I chose Japan anyway and it was the best decision of my life. I have been all over Asia and will retire there.

OMG the restaurant with post-its is so CUTE.! Regarding the photos, I’ve heard about it before. The people just don’t seem mean just amazed. I mean you’re so pretty...maybe you shocked people. It’s like getting hit on in the States but with cameras. Now, I’m an introvert so I would crawl away, but you guys handled things well. 😊🙌🏽💗

I am Vietnamese and I never discriminate or discriminate against people of different skin color than me. Even though we have different skin colors but our blood is all red. I always respect everyone around me.

Haven't been to Vietnam. I've been to Korea, Thailand and Hong Kong. What's interesting is the idea that Asians get a "curiosity pass" that a foreigner would never be given. Can I just walk up to a random stranger in Vietnam, and put my arms around them for a picture?? Would they be okay with that? I doubt it. Most Asian cultures have very defined rules of social engagement, based on relationship, age, etc. They know very well that touching people isn't something you just do, because you're "curious". I don't care if they've "never seen Black people". We don't have an extra head, or 3 arms, or 4 legs. We're obviously human, so they can recognize we're the same species. We're not sooooo different - we're not alien life forms.

Living in Korea as a black American, I completely resonate with this and experience it often! My non-blac POC friends find no fault in the behavior, just give them the “curiosity” pass. Like.. when has it been acceptable to just stare at someone so openly, touch them without permission, and say overly insensitive things? It’s not like they don’t know Black people exist, they consume enough of our media and have access to the internet to not be allowed such ignorance. It’s so annoying dealing with and it seems like Asians living in Asia are the only ones given this?? I wonder how that came to be.

Would they be okay with that?": in Vietnam, you can do this It's normal, as if they were your close friends. You will be welcomed as if you were meeting friends after a long time apart. 😊

honestly I do agree to some extent, but again Vietnam is not a developed country. I would only hold those standards to developed countries that get lots of international tourists, only recently has Vietnam started to receive this sort of attention. many expat communities are more closed off so you never really get to see them integrated into society. immigrants make below 1% of the Vietnamese population. social engagement with tourists is different from social engagement with your own people, and Vietnamese people are already very extroverted and we do have a lot of physical touching with our own people even if its with a stranger or a new friend. i know that in Vietnam at least, it's not black people that exclusively receive this sort of treatment, many white foreigners who have more body hair are also stared at curiously and are asked to be touched. i will say this though, they should always ask. if they are not asking, then they are in the wrong, for sure! any civilized Vietnamese person would know. Vietnamese are a very pragmatic society, i hope that you know that when we get touchy or stare its not out of judgement or hatred, we just want to know everyone better. The type of staring you get in Vietnam is going to be different from the one you get in Korea, etc. etc... we don't have the same racism or extreme colorism that South Korea does (although it does exist). i don't want to speak over those who are black and have experienced Vietnam for themselves, but I hope I can explain a little. In the end, it is up to you to form your own opinions and experiences on those topics, hopefully they will be positive ones.

That happened to me a couple of years ago:-) I got tired of being treated like a celeb. It started at Hanoi Airport, then from there all over........super friendly except for the tricycle driver who ripped me off for a few extra bucks. The key to getting along is........being polite....smile.......they tend to like Black Americans, but you must not let them confuse you with Nigerians....Enuff said!

in other way, I alway check the destination requirement before I go, traveling abroad need good preparation for documents, I am supprise a lot when you don't know about VISA while travel, I am aware that American citizen don't need VISA to enter many countries but you should check it first, don't you ? As a Vietnamese American born in America. I still get criticized as being Việt Kiều.( not true Vietnamese) to the Vietnamese people

This is difficult because Black Americans culturally do not like to be ogled or especially touched. The long history of objectification in the west makes being grabbed sort of triggering for us. I would really like to go to Vietnam but feel like that experience would be draining for me.

Bien Thach .. I think that’s how they eat bun cha in Hanoi. I have seen several videos of people in Hanoi eating like that. The fish sauce is slightly diluted so it’s not as salty.

I be honest with you the first time I meet African/American is when I move to USA 2008.

I try to imagine what that's like. I imagine how I would react if I saw a blue person...then I can understand how folks here feel. Very kind and curious....so luckily it's in my culture to just talk to strangers because we consider it rude to treat someone as 'strange'. It goes well, but it does zap your energy.

Apart from never seeing someone that different before, coupled with you're also very gorgeous that locals must have a picture. Curiosity as well as admiration but I get it can be tiresome. Now, the Chinese locals though, most are known to be very impolite especially when they travel abroad....

I'm at least a tenth-generation American, and I've met many impolite Chinese in the US. You might say it's endemic in their culture, and maybe they think they are being "normal," which is what a Chinese friend tells me. Want to insult a S.Korean, or Filipino? Call him/her "Chinese."

Alot of the touristy places have alot of tourists from other places. I don't think the Vietnamese would wanna take pictures of places like they're on vacation, cuz they're already in their own hometown. I don't feel comfortable seeing how ppl think its ok to invade personal spaces of others like that, as a Vietnamese I would yell at my own people if I see that.

That's exactly what it feels like. I try to take it in the spirit of goodwill because the flip side is that people will also help you...and we often need help to accomplish very basic things here. That's reassuring.

No complaints here! I had so much fun in Vietnam. They typically try to kill black people in America where I'm from so it was such an unique experience to get treated like some type of celeb. Mr. Glass's comment is right on the money . I hate that it came off to you like I was complaining because that wasn't at all what I was trying to portray in this vlog. Vietnam was beautiful and I would love to go back.

Yah it's from her own personal perspective but like she said, people in Vietnam do it in a more curious/respectful way compared to China...so why are is everyone arguing? She is showing love and people are picking it apart to find anything to complain about.

These Vietnamese people might have thought you were Alicia Keys or some kind of musical celebrity from America. And with your approval of course, they want to take photos with you because not everyday they get to see Alicia Keys or someone that beautiful.

Don’t take it personal . They welcome foreigners and appreciate tourists . Just their Culture how to be friendly with foreigners… I think They are the least racist people .
