Also, there were only 31 immediate deaths due to the radiation including the workers. Hundreds of firefighters responded throughout shifts and most didnt go to the roofs. Most still got cancer and would have died a few years down the line though.

The most scary thing about Chernobyl that I will always remember is that, what finally caused this all, was the EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN button which in this case actually functioned like a Trigger. Or well, the Helicopter that crashed when trying to move debris.. had to move through a thick cloud of smoke and didnt see the cranes on the other end, hit its rotorblades on the crane cable which destroyed the rotor and he dropped down instantly.

Not completely. The RBMK reactor design was flawed in almost every aspect, because it was designed to produce plutonium for military purposes, not for producing electricity for civil purposes. Probably biggest flaw was positive void coefficient, which made the reactor completely uncontrolable in case of emergency, or as in this case - human ignorance and disregard for any safety protocols. Adding to that graphite tips of control rods and voila! you now have made a dirty bomb with supposedly emergency shutdown system being now the trigger.

On the one hand, I feel like normally it would be really crass to capitalize on the worst nuclear plant tragedy in history. On the other hand, it's pretty clear that the devs are treating the subject matter with absolutely the appropriate gravitas due to the worst nuclear plant tragedy in history and that it looks like it will probably be a really good introduction to the events at Chernobyl for those who haven't heard of it or don't know much about it. Certainly looks like they've absolutely nailed the atmosphere of such a disaster, and we've only seen the exterior of the buildings! Gotta agree with a comment I saw from somebody else about the title though. I feel like something like "First Response: Chernobyl" would be a more gripping title free of the "Simulator" stigma. (And ... maybe opens the door to a series of future disaster simulation games-?) Definitely hope Drae gives us a full playthrough when the game is fully released!

Most of their life spands were cut into a 3rd due to radiation. Then another voluntary team came in later to try to safen up the area by drilling UNDER the power plant to get rid of the debris better. Most of them didn't live very long either despite all the safety steps they went through. Real heros don't wear capes.

one of the scariest parts about the disaster is that no one knew it was a total core meltdown and that it was radioactive. The first firemen on scene all thought it was a normal fire so no one had anything to protect them from radiation which is way so many people died. however the liquidators (the people mostly with the military who cleaned up the disaster and built the sarcophagus) knew it was radioactive and they had very strict rules in place to protect them but most still died because they didn't know how bad it really was.

I did a research report on nuclear disasters including Chernobyl. Interesting facts: the accident happened because the engineers were testing emergency backup generators in case of power outages. The site released radioactive material into the atmosphere for 9 continuous days spreading over 1000 square kilometers across Eastern Europe. On a more gruesome note, the third generation families from Pripyat were the first recorded cases of children contracting thyroid cancer. While only 44 deaths from the initial explosion, a total of 10,000 casualties from radiation, search and rescue, and related diseases.
