A grand flag-raising ceremony took place at Beijing's Tian'anmen Square on Saturday morning to mark the 67th birthday of the People's Republic of China.
More than 100,000 people from across China gathered at the square early in the morning to watch the ceremony. Many waved national flags or had images of the national flag painted on their faces.
"This is the first time that I have come to Beijing and Tian'anmen Square to attend such a grand flag-raising ceremony. I'm very excited and proud," said a spectator.
More than 2,000 representatives from Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, ethnic minorities and students were invited to watch the ceremony from a special viewing area.
Thirty-six soldiers paraded in formation as they carried the national flag around the square before it was raised to the tune of China's national anthem.
