Am 06. Januar 2024 fand der Polar Night Marathon in Tromsø, Norwegen statt. Hier bin ich den Halbmarathon gelaufen und habe mich arktischen Temperaturen gestellt. Im Sommer findet der Midnight Sun Marathon im Juni statt.
Der Tromsø Midnight Sun Marathon ist der nördlichste, von der Association of International Marathons and Distance Races zertifizierte Marathon der Welt. Seit 1990 wird dieser in der Arktis ausgerichtet und lockt Nationen aus der ganzen Welt an.
Doch jetzt ging es um den Marathon im Winter und neben möglichen Polarlichtern sind Dunkelheit und arktische Temperaturen von bis zu -18° Celsius möglich. Auf der Höhe von Tromsø, rund 300 Kilometer nördlich des Polarkreises, steigt die Sonne von etwa Anfang November bis Mitte Januar um die Wintersonnenwende nicht mehr über den Horizont. Es ist fast rund um die Uhr dunkel und diesen Phänomen nennt sich Polarnacht.
Während des Laufes in 2024 wurde Schneefall angesagt und dieser kam nach den ersten gelaufenen Kilometern mit böig auffrischendem Südwind von den Bergen, der es in sich hatte. Dieser wehte so stark auf die Läufer ein, so dass einige aufgegeben haben. Wehte der Wind an Steigungen kam man nur sehr zeh voran.
Der Laufkurs des Halbmarathons startete am Church Park im Zentrum der Stadt Tromsø und führte uns Läufer zuerst in den Süden, anschließend westlich in Richtung Flughafen Tromsø Airport direkt am europäischen Nordmeer entlang. Am Flughafen gibt es zwei Wendepunkte, bis es westlich wieder zurück in den Süden geht, im Süden dann aber über einen etwas kürzeren Abschnitt ins Zentrum von Tromsø zurück.
Im Ziel wartet die begehrte Medaille, aufgedruckt sind Polarlichter, auf jeden Finisher.
The Polar Night Marathon took place in Tromsø, Norway on January 6th, 2024. I ran the half marathon and faced arctic temperatures. In summer, there is the Midnight Sun Marathon in June.
The Tromsø Midnight Sun Marathon is the northernmost marathon in the world certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races. It has been held in the Arctic since 1990 and attracts nations from all over the world.
But now it was about the marathon in winter and in addition to possible northern lights, darkness and arctic temperatures of up to -18° Celsius are possible. At the height of Tromsø, around 300 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, the sun no longer rises above the horizon from around the beginning of November to mid-January around the winter solstice. It is dark almost around the clock and this phenomenon is called polar night.
During the run in 2024, snowfall was forecast and after the first kilometers of running it came with a gusty southerly wind from the mountains. That was tough. The wind blew so hard on the runners that some of them gave up. When the wind was blowing on inclines we all just made very slow progress.
The running course of the half marathon started at Church Park in the center of the city of Tromsø and took us runners first to the south, then west towards Tromsø Airport directly along the European Norwegian Sea. There are two turning points at the airport until it went west back to the south. In the south the course took a slightly shorter way back to the center of Tromsø.
After crossing the finish line, the coveted medal, printed with northern lights, awaits every finisher.
