Behringer Xenyx X1222USB Mixer

I replaced my Mackie 1402 VLZ mixer with Behringer Xenyx 1222 USB. I compare the two. Hope this is informative.

    Thanks for great review of these mixers, especially the x1222! It's great that you are an experienced user of these boards , as that allows you to address many more of the details of their operation. Too many "" reviews" out there are just glorified in boxing videos, where the presenter has little to no experience actually using the product! Kudos to you!

    Sam Squanch I have now been using this board for about a year and a half now. I have had no problems with it. I have a long history with recording mixers and audio boards and this thing feels smooth and delivers. This is the first PA mixer I have ever used where 90% of the time the channel EQ's and the main EQ are all set flat or very near flat. If this board died today I would buy another one immediately. I will be using it on a gig today and tomorrow and I have complete confidence in it. If I had one criticism it would be that the effects are a little limited but that is just being picky. The reverb is good and that's what I generally use all the time.

    Yes. I can use the regular monitor channel for the mix but you certainly can use the FX for another output mix if you don't want to use the internal FX effects on the board.

    Thanks for the comment. I stopped doing live gigs about two years ago and moved the mixer into my recording set up with my DAW. I use Reaper as my DAW and when I plugged the Behringer into my computer Reaper recognized it immediately. I use it to record to Reaper (it only outputs two channels to USB) but I also get to use it as an input for a lot of my outboard gear so it works really well for my situation.

    I agree. I am still using this board after 5 years of faithful service. I have no issues to this day. Where I live we have quite a few bars that do summer afternoon entertainment. Three years ago, my band was playing an outdoor gig and the sky opened up unexpectedly and it poured and while I was scrambling to get everything turned off and put my guitars away, the Behringer board was getting drenched. By the time I got the board out of the rain and turned it over, water dripped out of the board. I thought it was gone. I took it home and used a hair dryer on a low spread to dry it out. I waited a few days more before turning it on. When I turned it on everything worked. That's my idea of a great product. (I did use Doxit spray on the faders before turning it on)

    How does one use this mixer to add cool effects to live streams? For example, many streamers use this mixer to add awesome temporary effects to their voice such as echo and such, play certain sound effects, and much more! This all of course goes straight to their computer, not through an external speaker (I think).

Once again, many, many thanks for a very helpful review!! Cheers!! Phil

    I think the preamps are pretty good. If you ever watch any videos of Spectre Sounds with Glenn Fricker, He owns a beautiful recording studio and one his digital console is a small Behringer board that he runs the guitar amp mikes through because he loves the sound of the Behringer preamps on guitar cabs better than some of stand alone preampshe owns that run for hundreds of dollars each. I only use the Behringer for live PA work but it's dead quiet through my two Bose L1 systems and I don't have any problems with it after more than four years of almost weekly club gigs with my band.

    Nice video - I recently purchased a Mackie ProFX12v3 and for a submixer a Yamaha MG10UXU. I still have a Mackie 1202VLZ4 which I actually loved (have had for years). But I needed something with FX, hence the ProFX. I've been disappointed with the Mackie ProFX -- not much head room and very limited AUX returns compared to its older brother the 1202. And the Yamaha is noisy as hell for some reason. The Behringer unit looks like it could be a good replacement for the ProFX...then I just have to figure out what to do for a submixer with FX.... This helped though to get a peak at the Behringer mixer -- thanks.

    Thanks for the comments. That's the reason I replaced my Mackie, no internal effects. There was nothing wrong with it but once I removed it from a rolling rack case with a few outboard effects in the rack, I wanted something that was all in one. I don't record with the Behringer as I have a small home studio and a digital mixer but for live gigs I have been happy with the Behringer.

    +James Warren No new thoughts. I still continue using it weekly on gigs and still have not had a problem. The only criticism I have if any is that I am not that impressed with the compressors on the first four channels but I just turn them off. That's really the only thing I can think of. The board still sounds very transparent clear (no hiss, no hum, no distortion). If this one went down I would buy another one immediately.

    The main outs are low Z and the AUX out is which I use to do monitor feed is high Z 1/4 inch. The nice thing is the ability to add the same internal effects to the monitor feed with a separate control. This board never let me down. I have had it since 2014 and done 250 to 300 gigs with it over the years. I was using two sets of Mackie active speakers for my mains (chained) and a pair of Behringer Eurolive active speakers for my floor monitors. That was my speaker rig for about six years until I bought a pair of Bose L1 speakers.

This modal board is also about 10 years old though and that may have chnaged on newer versions.

    MinimalWave1982 You can only pick effect at a time from the 15 pre-sets.and you use each channels channels effect send to set the amount of that effect on each channel. If you want a different effect on another channel you can use the tip-ring-sleeve insert jack that is on each channel to send and return that channels signal to an outboard effect. I've had a lot of mixing boards over the years but I never had one with more than one internal effects module. Thanks for asking.

  • @Rickholly74

    There is only on headphone out. I suggest you buy a headphone amplifier box. They run less that $50 and then each person has a separate volume for their headphones. There are many brands and prices vary but for about $50 you can get a fairly goo one. In my home studio I use a more expensive one with both volume and tone but when I record remotely somewhere I use the Behringer MicroAmp HA400. It's small, very portable, comes with the 12v power supply and works well all for $25. It gives you four amplified headphone outs with individual volume controls that are fairly loud. Good luck.

    I never had a problem with it. What kind of problem is the monitor out? Is it to weak? Are you sure you have the individual outs on each channel turned up? You can see how much I have turned up on my mixer At 4:08 you can see I have my "Aux" sends on the first two channels set about 11 o'clock and the master monitor send at just below "0". In my case my first two channels are vocal mic channels. I feed my monitor mix to a pair of powered monitors. I use a pair of Mackie 12" thumps as floor monitors or in smaller rooms I use a pair of Behringer B207 Euro-live stand monitors. I get plenty of output from my board like this. I use the volume and tone settings on my monitors as the main control and rarely if ever make changes on the board. I hope this helps. What kind of set up do you have?

  • @Rickholly74

    There are a number of outputs. There are three places where you can get a stereo output. You have the low impedance left and right. You have a headphone out that has it's own volume control and you have the RCA outs that are labelled "2 Track" out. I only use this board for my bands PA so I only need two outputs, the main low imp outs to my powered speakers and the mono monitor out to my powered monitors. This board is super clean, no hiss, no noise that I can hear as a PA mixer. For $100 more the Behringer QX 2222 has a lot of outputs. My recording gear has more outputs but I don't use the Behringer in my recording set up. Not because i couldn't, I just don't need it for that purpose.

    Thanks for the comment. Last year I decided to retire from playing weekly gigs but right up until 2020 were still using the Behringer board and it worked great with no issues. In 2017 we were playing an outdoor gig and a really freak rainstorm came out of nowhere and just downpoured while we scrambled to get things turned off and get the guitars in cases as quick as possible. The Behringer board got drenched to the point that I literally picked it up and rain water came out of it. I took it home, took off the back plate and used a hairdryer to help remove any more water and then let it sit for a few days before turning it on. When I did it all worked except one channel but a few squirts of Deoxite cleaner on the fader brought it back to life. I was very impressed because I thought I would have to get a new board. There are a lot of options on this board but once you get use to the ones that work for your situation, it's really great.

  • @raydandy4899

    @raydandy4899

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@a-nus Actually I don't use this board for recording. I have a pretty nice home studio and I use two Behringer BCF2000 digital mixers. I have however recorded my band live using a feed from the Behringer into a laptop and Reaper DAW. The signal from the mixer was clean and quiet. Remember although this board has a USB out, it only gives you a stereo feed from the master outputs. Some people misunderstand that and think that because it has a USB output that it gives you a feed from each channel. That is not the case. For that kind of board you will need to spend a lot more money. As a PA board the Behringer has everything I needed for my band live. I do use a smaller Behringer mixer as an interface for my laptop. It works well. I often have recording projects where I want to add additional vocals or instruments and I take my laptop with the smaller Behringer and a Rode NT1 mic and go to someone else's home to get some additional overdubs. The USB out is easily recognized by my Reaper DAW and the whole thing works great. If you are planning to use the Behringer in a home recording situation you can get a smaller Behringer board with USB that will give you a two track USB output. If you recording into a computer with Reaper, Cuebase, Pro Tools or whatever, you don't need all the bells and whistles of the larger mixers the recording software takes care of that. All DAW software come with a lot of VST effects so you have reverbs, delays, compressors, gates etc. in the software. You don't need it in your mixer unless you plan to use it also as a live mixer. Good luck. P.S. I highly recommend Reaper as a DAW. I used Sonor/Cakewalk for years, tried Cuebase and Adobe Audition but I find Reaper is much easier to understand and use and has a ton of VST effects that are very good and it's a one time cost of $60 with free updates (which occur every few weeks).

    Well let's try this. The yellow knobs are the FX knobs. They control the amount of signal sent to the effects unit built into the mixer. Let's say you have a microphone plugged into channel 1 and it is on and working at a reasonable level but you don't hear any effects. Turn up the knob yellow knob on channel 1 to about 12:00 (half way). Now you are sending a signal to the effects input but you still don't hear it. Choose one of the effects types (reverb, delay etc.) by turning the effects knob above the yellow fader (a description of each effect is listed next to the display) then push the knob down to program that effect. Now the large yellow fader (4th fader from the right) can be brought up . Go about half way to start. This is the effects "Master" and controls how much effects output is going to the main and monitor faders. Above the yellow master effects fader are two yellow knobs. One sends the effects output to the main output bus. Put the yellow effects "main" send to about half way (12:00). You are now sending the effects to the main output and should hear it by turning up your master faders (the two grey faders all the way to the right). As you can see there is another yellow knob above the monitor fader (the red fader 5th from the right). This controls how much effects signal is going to your monitors. So you can have different levels of effects in the main output and the monitor outputs. I hope this helps.

    One last thing. Make sure the mute buttons on the FX faders are not engaged meaning they should be up not pressed down. These buttons like the other mute buttons are there so you can do a sound check and turn off the effects without changing any effects settings.

    I don't know how much I can help but here is what I know as I use this Behringer mixer and my pair of Bose L1 system speakers. I am not familiar with the Bose S1 Pro. The only issue I had with the Behringer mixer and Bose L1 is this particular Behringer mixer does not have a pair of high impedance out puts, only low impedance outputs (strange). This is a major oversight by Behringer. The Bose L1 system has two channel inputs, a low impedance mic channel and a line level high impedance channel. The mic channel with it's low impedance mic level is too sensitive for the mixers main outputs and distorts easily. On the other side, the line level channel on the Bose L1 does not have a low impedance input. It only has 1/4 inch line level inputs so I have use a pair of low impedance adapters on to go into the Bose L1 using the line level channel. I use the adapters (link below). Hope this helps. www.sweetwater.com/store/search?s=low+impedance+cable

    There isn't much more to tell. This board still works great. No issues. There are very few things on the back other than the power on/off, the phantom power on/off and the USB connection. Everything you need is located on the top right side of the mixer. The only complaint I have is there are no high impedance outputs which are often useful. I don't use this board for recording as I have a pretty nice home studio using two Behringer BCF2000 USB digital mixers so I can't comment on this boards recording capabilities. Thank for watching.

    I would assume the 1202 VLS is a nice mixer for that size. I needed more inputs for working live with my band. The 1222 has so much more I can't really compare them at all. The 1222 has built in effects, compressors on the first 4 mic channels, it's USB compatible, it has three way EQ (bass mids, treble), 7 band EQ that can be used on either the mains or monitor out, separate monitor and aux in's and out's with a master fader for each and the ability to add/adjust the effects for both the mains and monitors separately and since we use active PA speakers it has low impedance main outputs to go directly to the Mackie active speakers. It just has a lot of added things that are not available on the 1202 so I can't honestly compare them.

    Is the behringer on its own good enough in terms of the pre amps and effects for live singing? I almost bought a mackie pro effects v2 but the effects don't have a tap button to adjust the parameters as such like the old cfx which had knobs to adjust.

    The Behringer has decent reverb but that's the only effect I use on jobs. I have two Behringer boards an older one that I use in our bands practice room and the one in this video which I use for gigs. The older one is a UB2222-FX that was trashed and I bought originally for parts only for $50 on Ebay. I took it apart and cleaned it and got most of it working so we use it to rehearse. The point is that the effects in the older UB2222 are better than the FX in the newer X1222 mixer. I find you need to turn up the master send on the effects very high. It's not a problem in any way and the ability to set parameters on the effects is not really available but as I said, I only use this board for gigs and I just use the reverb effects so it's OK. We play a lot of rooms with horrible acoustics where sound is bouncing all over where I only use the reverb on monitors or not at all. I had my Mackie for many years and it was (and still is) a very good board. My Mackie does not have internal effects and it was in a large and heavy rack case with about 1/2 a dozen rack effects (EQ, Reverb/Dely, Compressor, etc.) I just had to stop using that larger system (smaller rooms and age considerations) so I got the Behringer. Good luck and thanks for asking.

  • @Rickholly74

    @Rickholly74

    5 жыл бұрын

    That's a good bad question. Mixing in stereo means mixing like you would mix a recording session meaning you might put one guitar on the right and another on the left and maybe mix the three vocalists left, right and center. For a music recording this is great but doing this in a live situation doesn't make much sense if one of the guitars or vocals is designated mostly to either the left or right of the PA, a large portion of the audience won't hear that instrument. If you are sitting on the left you won't hear what's on the right if it's mixed in stereo. Unless you are sitting about 20 feet back and dead center you won't hear everything balanced. That's why I record in stereo but mix my live feed to the PA in mono. In a large room a stereo mix is often lost. In the end it's a matter of personal choice. My whole system is capable of reproducing a full stereo mix in a live situation but I keep all the channels panned to 12:00 so the same signal goes to each speaker so no matter where you are left, right or center, you hear everything.

    Honestly for $400-500 you can buy a Tascam DP24 or DP32 that gives you 24 tracks of recording, contains a ton of effects, mastering software for your final mixes, 8 channel inputs with very good mic pre-amps, the ability to record 8 channels at once and a ton of other stuff all for the price (or less) than a Pro Tools software package. I have been using a Tascam 2488 24 track for about 15 years and I bought the upgraded DP 24 last year. No computer issues, no latency, no problems. (I do master my mixes in my computer with T-Racks Deluxe Mastering software). kzread.info/dash/bejne/famap7Cvlc-7gKQ.html

    The Behringer board is the live PA board I use with my band so it could mono as far as I'm concerned. It's a very nice PA mixer. You could use it for recording but the USB output is stereo two track. In order to multi track into your computer you need an interface like a Focusrite, Lexicon, Tascam or any other computer interface. These interfaces give you mic pre-amps, phantom power for condenser mics and a USB connection to get it into your computer. If you are using Cuebase you already have a digital mixer in the Cuebase software. You just assigned the input of the interface to a track in Cuebase. Most home studio interfaces come with one or two inputs but they make them with many inputs if that's what you need. More inputs, mean more money. While I have several interfaces and several DAW software's (Sonor, Cuebase and Music Creator 6 Touch), I still like my stand alone Tascam recorders because they already have their own 8 inputs and 8 mic pre-amps and phantom power built in. I work faster and better when I have a hands on recording workstation rather than playing with a mouse,a virtual mixing board and all the associated issues that come with computers and interfaces like latency (delayed playback) and other problems that slow down the work flow for me. It's probably because I have a long history of using analog based recording equipment and large mixing consoles and I'm just someone who likes to just reach over and turn a knob or push a fader to get what I want and not have to sort through menus just to use the EQ or turn up the reverb. If I want I always have the option of moving my recorded tracks from the Tascam to my computer through the USB out and load them into a software like Cuebase for additional work or tweaking. I rarely do this as I am usually quite happy with the results of my Tascam recordings. I can also just pick up my recorder, grab two headphones and go to another musician or singers place and get them to add a track or two with no problem. It's just the way I like to work. What you seem to be looking for is a digital multi track mixer if you have more than 2 to 4 inputs that many interfaces offer. Digital mixers are generally very expensive but good luck and thanks for asking.
