Behringer System 100 - 140 Envelope Generator "Linked Gate Input Mod"

A guide on how to modify your Behringer 140 module so that it will have linked Gate inputs, meaning you don't have to use a stacked cable or multiple to trigger both envelopes.
(I recorded this video a while ago actually but the video editing software I was using was so rubbish that I lost motivation and ended up putting on the back burner for a few months.)

If you look at the graphics on the Behringer 110 VCO/VCF/VCA you can see some connections are normally connected internally, but can be overridden when jacks are inserted.

@@InVacuo Just doing my first one now, thank you! By the way, the three grounding tabs around that pin would have been to hold the trigger input down to ground when nothing was plugged in, to perhaps stop the possibility of noise from triggering the envelope. :) Thanks again!

Bad news I'm afraid, when I isolated the pin you suggested & applied the patch wire as shown - the two envelopes are chained, but now the 2nd lower independant input doesn't work & the top manual gate button no longer functions to trigger the 1st envelope. :(

@@bengineer_the Hey man, I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately it seems KZread has done away with private messaging so I can't try to help you that way (I'd like to see photos of your modification to try and figure out what went wrong). Do you have an Instagram account? I could connect with you that way or you could give me your email address (or set up a temporary one you don't mind posting on KZread). Which ever way you choose I'll remove your comment as soon as I get your details to minimise expose. - That's about the best way I can come up with at the moment unless you've got a suggestion. (Edit) Because of the rather bizarre nature of the fault my first suspicion is you might have bridged something accidentally, I'd suggest having a good look through your soldering. The gate buttons should be unaffected by this mod. Oh I had another idea, you could make a private video showing your mod and post the link here.

Great mod if you’re adapt with a soldering iron, but for the sake of saving £6.50 for a short tiptop lead it’s a lot of work

You're forgetting to calculate with the priceless sense of satisfaction from modding your own gear. 😉 In essence I agree with you but it wasn't about the money (I mean, look at my current system), it was more something that just kinda annoyed me and I was able to solve myself in a more elegant way than using a stackable.

Soldering is an awesome skill to have. By now I must have saved hundreds of $$ by making my own cables, DI Boxes, patchbays and even CV controller for Vermona DRM1. A lot of simple modules (attenuators, multiples, simple mixers) are horribly overpriced... It's so satysfying to just turn blanks into functional modules with a bit of soldering.

Hey there! I've just successfully done the mod (Behringer should have normalized the inputs in the first place) but I wanna give a word of advice because the procedure was not without problems on my side. I had difficulties unsoldering all four jack socket lugs at the same time with a traditional soldering iron, so I used an SMD heat gun instead. I got the socket desoldered that way, but the plastic parts were a bit molten and I had thought that I wrecked the socket. After searching for a new one online I figured that those are not the standard jack sockets that other eurorack manufacturers use, but possibly some behringer exclusive ones. Anyway, I could not find a replacement online so I started measuring the mangled socket with a multimeter and it turned out to be still functioning, although looking pretty bad 😅 Now everything functions perfectly and the grounding of that lug is really not necessary. Little amounts of noise are not enough to trigger the envelope, it's the same as plugging in a cable which isn't plugged into anything else and just dangling in the air. Thanks for the inspiration for this mod and Grüße aus München! :)

You are creating a "normalized" patchpoint. It's important to have jacks that can be normalized that you're working on. When no plug is inserted the jack is normalized to the internal routing (your additional wire). When a plug is in, it breaks that normalized connection. This is very common to see in patchbays if anyone is interested in any follow up information.
