It's true, but why?

Johnny is a genius because he tunes his guitar however he wants and then writes tracks in those tunings. I have done this myself, and I know what kind of creativity it unlocks. Huge respect for this guy.

Been my favorite band since I was 11. I'm now 36. Name has been my favorite song since. Actually heard it on my Spotify on my way home today. They have several other incredible hits. So so so underrated

Oh yea , slide, broadway, dizzy, all great hits. Black balloon is one of the best songs Johnny wrote.

This song feels more like a tragic event like a long loved one death than heartbreak

John is one of the most genuine artist out there. Goo Goo Dolls is so underrated.

Iris made such a huge impact that I didn't even know U2 & Peter Gabriel were on the City of Angels soundtrack.

It's a beautiful soundtrack

This is one of my favorite songs of all time.... it's got everything happening in it - rock, guitar, drums, violins, epic orchestra and then some quieter moments. Sometimes there's a little country twang in there and other times it feels a bit Celtic and the lyrics are really epic. It all works :)

I bought City Of Angels' soundtrack and Iris is a powerful emotional piece! One of the BEST in the late 90's. Thank you Goo Goo Dolls.

I just saw them live recently on a whim and holy crap are they a fantastic live band.

The first verse of the song is so deep!! Those lyrics accompanied by the raspiness of his voice is pure gold. You can always tell by the singer's passion if they actually wrote the song. So I wasn't shocked to find out he wrote it. My absolute favorite movie soundtrack is Queen of the Damned. Due to Iris, Angel, and Uninvited, this soundtrack is a really close second. Iris and Angel can always bring a tear to my eye.

This song always reminds me of my senior prom and more importantly my date. Funny this popped up tonight, cause it was just on the radio and my 9 year old son liked it and asked me to turn it up. So after the song I told him how it will always bring me right back to the spring on 1998 and the stunningly beautiful date I had

STILL one of my absolute favorite songs by a favorite band! Such completely underrated & great talent.

Name was and is a real life song … u see it all around u even in 2023 and future generations will see it in thier life time … one of the best songs ever written and recorded …. Peace 🛜

I so agree Antwan. Goo Goo Dolls are an INCREDIBLE band. Johhny Reznik is so talented. He wrote SO MANY great songs BUT this one he nailed. You don't write a CLASSIC tune and sing it UNLESS you are totally a gifted mucisian. In Johnnys case INCREDIBLY talented with a beautiful mello voice. Love Goo Goo Dolls ❤

One of my favorite songs!!! Have been listening to this song for yearssss! I ended up coming across this song today and my son was having a hard time and crying. I played this song for him and he put his head down on my chest and listened to me sing and listened to the song. After it finished he asked me to play it again 5 times. I can now say my son is a fan and he just turned 2 years old!!

I always enjoy interviews about the creation of the songs they made. If I remember correctly, he was at quite the low and he isolated himself in a hotel room and I believe he had a broken string on his guitar so he started tuning away randomly until he found a nice found and sometime after that Iris was created

Tip of the iceberg really, there's a long interview where he actually goes into the process of writing the song, and for example how he locked himself in a hotel room for weeks and broke two guitar strings, had no spares, so he tuned the rest of the guitar strings to D, which gives the song that unique sound.

They also had a pre-release screening to help with writing the song because the producers wanted them to write a song about the movie. They didn't like the movie but a job as a job so they wrote the song anyway which became more famous than the movie that it was supposedly about.
