This edition of Behind the Screen gets personal with Ethnic Studies Education instructor, Daniel Rubin, PhD. When Dr. Rubin started teaching as an English Language Arts teacher in the 1990s, he was naturally drawn to issues of equity, race, ethnicity, and how minority groups are treated in the United States. As he taught his students novels, he focused on issues that helped empower them. When he eventually got his PhD, he began to focus more specifically on ethnic studies, multicultural issues, and issues of diversity. Three main skills that students will take away from his courses are thinking critically, thinking analytically, and effectively writing out their thoughts. Dr. Rubin’s advice for those who are interested in the education field, especially in ethnic studies, is to absorb as much information as you can, while also questioning everything that you read. He encourages being critical in your analysis, finding stories that are not being told, and taking ethnic studies courses.
