Behind the Scenes with Nyjah Huston, Chris Cole, and More at Tampa Pro

Спорт

In 2015, the Tampa Pro contest became an official stop on the Street League Skateboarding Pro tour. As a game changer for both trademarks of the skate culture, the union brought some interesting point of views. VICE Sports was there to capture this pivotal moment in skateboard history and heard from Brian Schaefer, Brian Atlas, Chris Cole, and many more about what it really meant for the two skate giants to finally come together.

Reminded me of going to my local skate shop to buy 411VM's on VHS, just to watch the Tampa AM comps back in the early 2000's.

Bums me out what skateboarding has become. It's sick that it has gotten so crazy. Some sick shit going down But most of these kids are all amped about winning and being better than this or that guy. That's not what it's about. It seems to have lost it's soul!

+Keith Richards Liver Yeah Street League is wack. It took so much of what made skateboarding actually skateboarding, doing what you want on whatever you want. I dont understand it, why do bails penalize you? Why are you forcing everyone to hit a certain obstacle a certain number of times? Board snaps tough luck wait a turn, They took away the individualization. To some extent it makes them try harder, but in most cases now that have to be strategic and calculating. Do a hard trick and possibly bail or do an easy trick and get points? Its so fucking boring to watch. Malto won a SL just because everyone else was going tech and bailed and he was doing nosegrinds every go. And its single file, what the fuck? It takes 30 mins for a pro to get 6 tries. Do you wait at a spot or the park for everyone to have a turn before you get to go again? Its like every organized sport now where the ref has to blow the whistle to start moving. Why organize a sport thats basis it to be unorganized. There is no soul in commercial skateboarding.

+IDiggPattyMayonnaise Yet at the same time, it gives skaters some actual opportunity to win some money and make a living off of skateboarding. Hate to break it to you, A LOT of pros still have to get regular jobs because they don't get enough money from skateboarding. Street League (and all of these other organized competitions and events) actually give skaters the opportunity to get recognized and make a name for themselves, while also winning money and getting more sponsors. Welcome to the real world, where people want to get recognized and compensated for what they do.

Mikey Johnson If you read my post I don't hate all contests, just Street League, I really enjoyed the Maloof Money Cup. Have you noticed it's generally the same 30 skaters who enter SL? Cole, Sheckler, PRod, etc. You say "actually give skaters the opportunity to get recognized and make a name for themselves" NO ONE in SL is suffering. Most have sponsors outside skateboarding--target,energy drinks, gopro--or own their own companies. Most are already mllionaires. Only the top 15% of pro skaters make a living wage on skateboarding and only the top 5% enter SL. So if you wanna talk about skaters who "want to get recognized and compensated for what they do" these pros already do. When it's someone who rides for say The Friendship or War Inc or HOPPS I would support what you're saying because those pro make NOTHING off their name. Malto, TPuds, O''Neill the elite level get royalty checks monthly most in the 1000's some like Cole or PRod in the 10,000's, plus shoe royalties and other sponsors. Jereme Rogers confirmed he was getting $12,500 from Red Bull alone. $40000 total a month from everything else. That was years ago before free SL advertising everywhere, imagine what those riders pull now. Your not talking to a child, I've seen skateboarding go through it's phases.

+Keith Richards Liver Yeah but most of these kids depend on the money from those contests...its their job, their career, how they pay the bills. Its expensive to travel around and hit these contests. You're either in it to win, or you go broke. You can't make a living by just being sponsored anymore. Now back in the day (10 years ago), it was possible to live pretty comfortably just from sponsorships alone, but thats all changed now due to several factors.. One, this new internet/social media age we live in covers about 80% of the advertising for sponsors.. so they don't have to depend on riders that much anymore. Reason two, 10 years ago the 'new' skateboarding culture (late 90's to early 2000's) was very much in its infancy. The skateboarding market was blowing up like crazy, alot of new brands breaking there way in with almost unlimited market share available. All of these new brands and companies really dependent on the skaters and skate shops to get there name out. Each day brought 5,000 new skaters, and they all need a complete deck with all the latest gear and coolest clothes. The market was bloated, there was tons of cash being thrown around -but those days are long gone as of the 2008 crash. Now days social media has almost completely takin over the role of the sponsored skater, and with e-commerce becoming a staple in our everyday lives.. the online stores have takin the skateshops place, that and the economy was why alot of your favorite shops have dried up. Although, the skateshops have really made a decent come back over the last few years, focusing more on clothing and apparel rather than skate gear -the extreme sports fashion has broke through the fad stage and has become an established culture. *Getting back to my point, these kids are starving to win these contests. Most sponsors won't even give you the time a' day if your not in the upper ranks of the contests circuit.. and you gotta be winning some of those contests to get on seat on some of the bigger brand name teams. This is what its pretty much come down to: the only reason why sponsors really even sponsor kids anymore is just to stay relevant. All they really need is one or two of the top 10 big hitters to be out there wavin' their flag.. sometimes its really just a pissing contest between other brands and companies. Its depressing, it really is.. but this is the truth. Skaters don't wanna know this and i don't blame them. Its the sad reality they're sucked in to. But, at the end of the day, they're all doing what they love. Thats what keeps them going. Good news is, this madness will come to an end, eventually. These companies that are"too big to fail".. its a story as old as time. One day the skaters will take back what was once theirs, and the cycle will begin all over again..just in a different format....and hopefully with hover boards! lol Thanks for reading!!

Lavish LaVon I disagree there's "contest" skaters--like Lutzka or Nyjah.. Some who skate some contests--Decenzo, Romero. Then there's those who never enter any contests--Rieder, Cory Kennedy, Biebel--these are the vast majority. I rarely see anyone from Expedition One, Organika, DGK, Chocolate, Anti-Hero, Santa Cruz, Foundation other than videos they put out. Some of the bigger names, to skateboarders at least, never skate contests. Yeah the biggest name are in SL, but they're in SL because they're the biggest name, because they're already established and making money--it's invite only. In X-Games you get like $3000 just for showing up. Every contest it's the usually the same 30 skaters. The Dew tour is probably the best chance an up and coming skater has to get somewhere. Clips online is what makes you stand out now, not full parts, just pushing out as many tiny clips as you can. I do agree that KZread changed the game for skateboarding. Revive is one of the biggest deck companies there is now. In my opinion they're hacks, not good enough to even be AM on a real company. They are what this generation of skateboarders deems skateboarding. Their exposure is 1000% more than what pros put out. Their profit margins are huge, because they cut out the middle man--skate shops--and ship it direct to your house.

Although street skating is getting more technical and the commercialization is spreading the sport, I liked it better before contests ruled. Not all things that count can be counted, and not all things that can be counted count. Cool video nevertheless.

Street League is misrepresenting skateboarding making it look like it's some dumb ass sport. It's not a sport. I'm glad that the Skatepark of Tampa joined the tour so they can show a more diverse and fun side of skate competitions. Street League is amazing and wrong on so many levels.
