I am an English girl. Brought up Church of England. Now interests mainly pagan and yet by the end of series three I almost felt like the cast of Shtisel was my extended family . I was so invested in them and gained such an insight into orthodox Jewish culture. When I watched the last episode I felt quite bereft! Just an amazing show!

Bravissimi ❤️

I'm a tatar man from Russia, my parents' families tradition was Muslim, so I had been grown in a near religion environment. When I started to watch Shtisel series I was amazed by the atmosphere, both moral, mental and visual, which so much resembled me my own childhood! That was the first impression. Then I started to dive into their family story, the inner problems and so on. Then I saw my own father in Shulem, and to watch the series opened to be a kind of way to analyse our own family relations. I really appreciate all the authors of Shtisel. It is a really good and deep movie in general, and it was one of the ways for me to teach my wife for another cultures - both Jewish (which I always was interested in) and Muslim (which was my family tradition).

@@Rolando_Cueva Most groups of Chasidim and non Chasidim do not use internet. If you look around you you know how its changed the world in good and much bad ways.We are Chabad Chasidim and attempt to use every scientific discovery to ALSO serve G-d. Most of us have "filtered" internet so intrusions like porn, violence, pedophilia do not encroach. I'll give you an example how we use internet for good. We have many community -help groups internationally as well as localy.Example. Mr. X is very ill, a call in his community is sent out that prayers and good deeds be done in his merit. If such is flashed worldwide people who know him globally can also pray etc. Each local has a"lost and found" since we may not keep anything we find, and we must attempt to find its owner, rings, money, wallets, important documents, bits of clothing end up back to their owners. Of course there are ways to donate online. Organs, blood, etc and money. We must give 20% of all we earn, even a poor person gives 20% to charity and internet has ideas.News, media, communications of the various Chasidic groups and here in israel for example we do not live alone we are part of society here so we need to know what goes on and to be in contact with people from all walks of life. To serve G-d in more joyous ways.

I loved that it shows an orthodox religion Haredi community with dignity and realism. With all their traditions and rules, a story dealing with life and death grew out of this, and it was something i can feel and understand. I come from a america background with eastern catholic indian family. I have ultra conservative family to very liberal members. I usually see films and shows that shows either side glamourized or demonized... the fact is...to me... neither is perfect or the best. Its just traditions and ways of living. I feel less pressure in some ways to fit in. I can only be what i can in the moment to my best. Omg when the newest women Racheli had manic depression... the way she is treated is exactly how it is. That last episode on the stories we share really healed me... i too have felt consequences from oversharing.

One of the best series ever. I waited the third season, and I watched with no breath. After I finished I wanted to write a letter to Giti and her wonderful imperfect husband. This series is not about a community, or religion, is about love and acceptance, and understanding, and forgiveness, about respect and memory, meaning about being human. I loved the small talkings in the kitchen between Kive and his father, when the old man share the toast bread with garlic with his son, what a simplicity. Respecting Libbi and everybody memory, and Giti, Giti, with her sacrifices without knowing she is doing sacrifice, only to protect her family, together with her loving and mistakable husband. I love you dear characters, I will think; what Giti will do, how she will find the strengh to support everyone. Thank you.

It is a fascinating display of how secular Jews can portray their religious counterparts with such authenticity. Throughout the series (at least the first half which I saw several years ago) they maintain respect and sensitivity so that, as a religious Jew myself, it was never cringe-worthy. Their yiddish is somewhat wanting. No one who has not been born into that unique culture can ever quite master the richness and multi-nuanced flavour of this unique dialect.

Very interesting! I study a foreign language, lived abroad for a couple of years and consider myself fairly good with languages, yet I could not understand one word beyond the Mazel Tov, Shalom, Mitzva, and other Yiddish words that one hears often enough growing up in the New York area.

@@marymagdalene3004 I think it also depends on the languages you're familiar with. I'm also Dutch and know the German language pretty well (which is similar to Dutch to some degree), so found it quite easy to understand Jiddisch (which is based on German). Interesting indeed! ;)

I came across this series and was surprised how close Yiddish is to German. It has a number of insightful kernels of truth weaved through it and the characters seem just so authentic to me , I really got into it and have my brother watching it now.
