Behind the Scenes of ParaNorman: Hand-Making Characters | LAIKA Studios
You came for the zombies, but you stayed for the characters. ParaNorman, the second film from LAIKA Studios, is full of lovably unique characters whose distinctive stop-motion puppets were built by hand with belly-movers, metal armatures, guitar-tuning devices, and more.

I love how they really seem to care for the puppets. At 4:30 it's like you're being shown pictures of somebody's child and it's amazing

The puppets are so cute
The affection they have when talking about the little world they created...it honestly sounds so parental. These are their children. When she's talking about Norman's bag it's like how a mum points out their child's fav things 'he's wearing his favourite jeans and his favourite hoodie' you can hear the restrained smile.

They do internships for juniors/seniors in animation school, though I have heard that they'll take sufficiently talented self-taught animators.

Their latest movie is Missing Link (2019)..
Each Behind the Scenes video makes me love LAIKA even more wow. The attention to detail and the way everyone talks about the making of the puppets (plus the way the Costume Design Supervisor talked about Norman and his clothes) shows how your characters and worlds are never flat and how much you love them. Its really inspiring tbh

They are underrated since their artistry are mostly overshadowed by the fact their early movies terrified kids growing up in the 2010s. Coraline for example, it's their best known work since a lot of kids born in the between the mid and late 2000s were traumatized from watching the movie, same goes with Paranorman and Boxtrolls.
the way the staff handles each puppet and talks about them...you can just sense the love in their voices
Growing up watching stop motion animation gave me a love for the craft. Seeing Kubo and the Two Strings in the cinema was a true experience seeing the craftmanship unfold on the big screen was magical. Thank you Laika for giving the world beautiful hand crafted animation (even if the world doesn't see them in the cinema).
I love how much they care for detail and it’s not just for money while making a movie, it’s pure art, and they made my childhood so much more interesting
You can feel the huge amount of love and passion and dedication that goes into these films. Laika's behind the scenes always blow my mind :')
“ParaNorman” will always be in my list of Ultimate Favorite Films. Neil will always be in my list of Favorite Characters. I’ll fondly remember visiting the ParaNorman exhibit at the Cartoon Art Museum for my 25th birthday, and meeting Mark Shapiro at the Walt Disney Family Museum and allowing me to hold a Norman puppet. Seeing these behind the scenes always blow my mind. I’m torn between two part of myself, the one who would love to learn how remodel dolls and create stop-motion animation... and the other who would not have the patience to accomplish any of it. I guess the only way to find out is to try. Hopefully continuing watching these videos will be the encouragement I need to do it someday.
I love Laika Studios. Everything they do so magical and ageless.
really loved paranorman!! i want to work for laika at some point as a storyboard artist or character designer. even if i wouldn’t be handling the character puppets and wonderful landscapes themselves i’d be over the moon to be a part of the process, just because of how much love is poured into all of these movies!
Awesome... I didn't think in childhood how it was filmed. it's just a colossal job... respect!
Laika NEVER gets any credit or rewards for these films. they TRULY are amazing at what they do.
its sooo heartwarming to see so many women in the creative production
When I first watched it I actually didn’t know ParaNorman was stop motion

I am a big fan of stop motion animation, with today's technology i really adore this master piece ❤️
Seeing behind the scenes for stop motion movies, makes me really appreciate them a whole lot more, and love them even more. It's so cool how they can do all this amazing work!
This is pure magic and one of the reasons why I TOTALLY LOVE the stop motion pictures
The best movies ever made are done at Laika. Sell me some props!
Years ago I saw the preview at the movie theater. I was terrified of it and for almost a year I didn't go to the movies. I do know but it really scared me. I feel much better now. I am older and I see that it is not so scary to me now. Thank you for showing me that. 💚
This is my favourite laika film. I love stop motion and I started doing it in 4th grade. The problem was that I didn’t have a rig to keep the characters standing so they would always fall over. Thank you laika for reigniting my love for stop motion.
I'm speechless.. All my favorite animations are from Lyka! Mad Respect to Lyka 🛡🏅🏆💯
Im so happy this was on my recommendation list
I love the way that their eyes brighten up when they introduce each characters with care and joy❤❤
I always thought this was animated cause of how smooth it was, Apparently it was literally smooth
This movie is a work of art
ParaNorman is one of my all time favourites. Great work, guys!
Much respect too all these people who make “puppet” movies like these😳!!
Paranorman and coraline ARE MY FAVORITE MOVIES 😌
Although there is no place to learn stop motion animation in my small country, I am studying alone. So the behind the scenes video uploaded from Laica is very much appreciated for me. One day I want to work in Laica too.
I am looking at videos like this to see how to go about doing a stop motion. But geezes, the detail and time of these professional productions is over whelming. Wow
This is amazing, imagine really how much work goes into one scene, frame by frame.
this is like professional arts and crafts-but the BIG leagues 😳
I love these behind the scenes.
Why did I always think that such cartoons are 3D animation ?? ))) Very cool!!!
Such adorable and wonderful creations! They LIVE!
I know its kinda random, but whoever came up with Mitch's deltoid joke, thanks! I cant help but to choke on laughter every time i get my own deltoids complimented in the gym. Love all your works and behind the scenes gave me even more appreciation!
i love the way they are caring those character like real people, amazing
Im so pleased this type of work has not died out because of computer graphics.
I aspire to one close day work for Laika Studios. Their characters and stories are so memorable and awaken so much joy and mystery to me
I really enjoy watching LAIKA's making-of

Favorite Laika movie. It's flawed, but its so damn charming! I love it even more than Coraline or Kubo. Also kinda holds a place in my heart as one of my favorite animation studio's first fully original movie.
this is at the same time terrifying and really impressive. these people spend a week on one head of hair....
