I have found similarities with Antigone, a play written by the Greek playwright Sophocles (497 or 496 a.C.-406 or 405 BC). Antigone learns that one of her dead brothers was denied a grave. Both had fought during the civil war for the throne of Thebes. Creon, who took power, decides that Polinices will have his corpse exposed to the birds of prey. Antigone revolts against the decree of Creon and decides to offer a worthy burial to the brother. In Captain Fantastic, the story of proper burial is resumed in order to also fulfill a law considered by the religious as natural, superior and divine, because the person who died in the film was Buddhist. This natural law would transcend that of men. Captain Fantástico is a hippie, a rebel, who, like Antigone, questions the power of the state; the obligation to accept all laws and moral rules that contradict our wills and beliefs.

Interesante análisis, llevo mucho sin leer antigona aunque en la película me pareció que el tema de los ritos funerarios de la madre eran más un catalizador del viaje transformativo que terminaría llevando a cabo la familia. Aun así me gusto mucho tu interpretación

No one in the comments seems to understand that although this lifestyle is inspiring and beautiful shown through Ben's eyes - it's clear at the end of the film that they were being alienated and abused hence Ben compromises and moves into a house because his love for them is so strong. So ppl saying they wish they were brought up like this???? Are u sureeee about that

I think they’re more talking about that bond they have between siblings and with their father, and their father being open and honest with them. Completely agree with you on the whole though!

My only problem was the title of the movie, at no point does anyone call him Captain Fantastic. I think a better tittle could've been "down the drain" as symbolic of their mother's journey and as they changed their way of life. Maybe thats not a better title, but if I had an hour and 5 writers in a room I'm sure wed come up with a better one.

According to your explanation you want them to say "Down the drain" in the movie then. Captain Fantastic has a symbolic meaning. The way I understood it was that the kids see him as their role model. They love their father even though they may not share the same opinion on certain things but their father is the person they look up to. He is "fantastic".
