Behind the scenes - How to make a drone show

The video demonstrates how to start set-up a drone show with DroneShowSoftware.com.
The creative part of the drone show depends on the show's choreography. The drone flight has to be created with any 3D animation software. Believe it or not - there are no limits for animation. Drones can create virtually ANY shape in three dimensions. They can even carry fireworks. The animation for this Winter Holiday drone show was created by Base Motion studio (Riga, Latvia.)
The speed and distance have to be tested once the animation is finished to make sure there is no collision danger and that the drones can reach the required speeds.
Once the animation is finished, Drone Show Software makes it possible to test it virtually - no drones are harmed! :) So-called software-in-the-loop (SITL) virtual environment that simulates real drone behavior is used. SITL allows to check if the provisionary takeoff and landing positions are OK if all animation formations are as they should be, all the lights are working as expected and the show is facing a correct direction. When the provisionary show position is clear, to assure audience safety it is possible to set drone flying limits with a cylinder or polygon shaped fences. Ready to proceed!
Controlling dozens or even hundreds of drones simultaneously is not easy at all. The good thing is that Drone Show Software takes care of the hardest stuff. The show operator just needs to check the drones and push the button!
Next step - organization of the show: setting up the Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS base station, Wi-Fi router for connecting the drones and the main control laptop. When everything is ready drones can be placed on the take-off field. When the drones have been placed out, Drone Show Software automatically assigns the flight paths from the animation to each drone. Next, the paths are uploaded to the drones. Then its time to do a preflight check to make sure all parameters are within the accepted limits. The final step is setting the show time, letting the drones know when they should take off. Drone Show Software allows to pre-program an exact starting time for all of the drones, so you do not need to worry about starting the show late. Ready, steady, arm the motors and go!
Drone Show Software displays all drone parameters in real time. It also shows the flight in 3D map environment. The setup has 4 safety layers to protect spectators: Geofence prohibiting drones to fly beyond a certain perimeter; control interface; Red Button app, and a backup human pilot with a remote controller is required to take over with manual control. The drones will land automatically after the show to enjoy the applause.

So many animals run til they collapse of exhaustion because of fireworks events. If Drone Shows replaced fireworks, and there was music instead of loud bags, then so many animals lives would be saved, and nervous pets wouldn't suffer.

True , I really hate my dogs freaking out because of my neighbour's fireworks , like we had to chain it nd it bit d chain until it broke its teeth ( before anyone says we shouldn't chain dogs in d house, d reason we had to chain it is cause we had guests in our house who are really scared of dogs being around)

I like the new Blender plugin guys. Seems quicker at checking collisions and speeds. And it looks like I can now have a different FPS for the waypoints and the changes in RGB values. Nice. 8FPS changes in colour does create nicer effects.

Can i know which sensor is used in each drone to coordinate with each other, i mean how software knows the position of the drone, and the distance between any nearby drome because I don't think gps will measure distance less than 1 meter in such a small system. And how does software know the hight from ground in all drone.?

Hahah you need a clear spot or landing zone for take off... hahah thats why they added those empty plastic container below them. They fly with their own landing zone so they can land almost everywhere. Also the plastic is a nice light diffuser. Thats a win-win situation :)

Indeed - a win-win situation. Initially the plastic container for these "v.1 show drones" is used a light difuser, and after some time testing the team decided to skip the legs (saves space while transporting the drone fleet) and land on drone's own landing zone. Today there is more than one model available for the drone shows - depending on payload (light, firework, etc) and flight conditions. Yes, Blender is great to create the 3D choreography for drone shows animating the drone flights. in 2020 we even organised the first "Drone Show Choreography Competition" to motivate more Blender users to become drone show choreographers. Discover: www.droneshowsoftware.com/competition

How does the software know where each drone is at any given time? GPS does not have the resolution, and the D=S*T formula alone seems too asynchronous to work.

How did you guys manage the drone battery duration?

In most cases our shows last up to 10 minutes, which is plenty for a fully charged 4 cell Li-Po battery. When we are flying in colder weather we are using battery warmers and two sets of batteries - one for preparation and one for the show. Battery levels are monitored in Drone Show Software. Wouldn't it be easier to just form a big cube of many stationary drones and then synchronize the led lights on them? Like a 3d TV screen. Wouldn't that be easier than creating choreographed flight paths?

While a drone show can serve as a flying screen, achieving a high-resolution image requires at least 2000 drones, preferably 4000. However, by orchestrating dynamic formations with drones, we can achieve a remarkable effect using significantly fewer drones.

I wish this will replace fireworks. Not only is it better for the animals, sensitive people and the environment, but it’s so much more beautiful than fireworks and it also has the emotional component. I can’t understand how people are so obsessed with fireworks. The future looks good ;)

In this video, we use self-built drones based on Pixhawk.
i was suppose to sleep but a random stuff pop up to my head that needs to be google and now ik that they coded it, i thought 500 people was controlling the 500 drones individually

One of the most important elements of any show is the choreography - let's compare to some dancing event - also one/two dancers can achieve a WOW effect if the lights, music and choreography are aligned and breathtaking! The same applies to drone shows - if the choragraphy and transitions from one formation to next are mesmerizing - then the whole show will be amazing. Lennart Nilsen I don't think they do as each drone is programmed with its own unique flight path. Unlike say acrobat airshows where pilots fly in formation and constantly look at their relative position to each other.
