At 2:15, when the board was changed, they would have the contestants turn the backs to the wheel while the letters were changed. I always wondered how they did that with the old puzzle board. So they slipped letters on to the light up blocks, well triangles since they have 3 sides. I was told that when that puzzle board was tossed, they gave Vanna and Pat each a letter from it as a souvenir.

Hi! I was a contestant on "Wheel" in Nov. 2010. The Used Letter Board is now (as you can imagine) a monitor. Whenever a letter is called, the "used" letter is removed from play. The monitor also displays each player's total (for the round and overall; You can, sometimes, see players looking there to see if they should solve or not), "Prize Puzzle," if it's happening that round, & any prizes the player has in his/her bank for that round. It's located to the left of the puzzleboard in the studio.

Merv Griffin kept Johnny Carson's brother employed for many years. Dick Carson directed both Merv's talk show and The Wheel of Fortune.

At 2:05, you see the letter board that you sometimes hear Pat mention. When someone accidentally calls a letter that's already been called, Pat says,"Sorry, look at the letter board, it's already been called." In the early days, Chuck Woolery(host before Pat) sometimes said, "The folks at home can't see it but there's a letterboard that the contestants look at that keeps track of all the letters that have been called and haven't been called."

DId you catch the shot where they are pulling letters down that have been called? You can track what letters are picked now by using the "Used Letter Board" app on the Apple App store next time you watch Wheel of Fortune

Those diamond backdrops would be used permanently on the nighttime show from 1990-92 for unknown reasons.. even though the previous backdrops were still being used on the Goen version.

Respect to the guy behind the counter who asked for Vanna's number. I'd have done the same!

Haha! I would've said, "I'm sorry. I was so busy making you happy by baking you those cookies, that I misplaced your number. Could you give it to me, again?"
