Behind the revolution of Broadway hit "Hamilton"

The groundbreaking hip-hop musical "Hamilton," telling the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton, is the hottest ticket on Broadway. Since previews began in July, the show has sold more than $61 million in tickets. Now, fans can get a backstage look at the musical in a new book, "Hamilton: The Revolution." Show creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda and cultural critic Jeremy McCarter, who co-wrote the book, join "CBS This Morning" to discuss the process of creating the musical.

    Whenever an interviewer tried to get Lin to talk about himself and his masterpiece, he always turns it around to talk about how gifted the other people he works with are. He's an incredibly humble guy.

    One think i would have like Lin to mention when he was asked about the "non-white" wording of the principal actors casting call is that casting calls in the past has often specified "caucasians" for it's roles, how come no one ever had issues with that?

    +robin212212 Alexander Hamilton was the big bankster of the day. He was Goldman Sachs. Hamilton argued for and set up the first privately owned central bank. Read what Jefferson, Washington, and Franklin said about Hamilton and his banking scam. Burr was the good guy. There was no revolution, thanks to Hamilton. So pathetic how wrong Miranda got this. But he's a star...so I guess that's all that matters in our degraded society.

    +Michael Morrell Your points all addressed in the show. Jefferson wanted an agrarian society. Hamilton set up a national bank so that the U.S. would have credit. How dumb can you be?

    Jacob Straut It's true what you say about Jefferson, it's an often cited fact about how he felt (he hated NYC and the dishonest shysters that infested the island ). But your point about Hamilton doesn't disprove anything I said, which is all verifiable. There should be more people like Burr today. oy.

  • @jacobstraut5601

    @jacobstraut5601

    +Michael Morrell Burr was just a politician going for success. He was a populist, just like Bernie Sanders. Alexander has actually shaped this country by starting the banks as it unified this country and made it stronger, allowing it to grow. Burr is way less important in the scope of history.

    This interview tells me only that Hamilton, as a politically-charged cultural and social phenomenon, has been embraced with wide open arms by the hawkish, corporate-financial-capitalist US establishment, its political leaders in Washington, and its corporate media arm. Hamilton culls black American support for the established political and financial system; embraces the capitalist ideology of the 'American Dream,' efficiency and constant production; appropriates social and cultural traditions and expressions of identity from minority communities and integrates them into an acceptable historical narrative; mythologizes the history of the United States, its origin, growth as a civilization across a populated continent, and the exploitation of labor that was and is essential to its rise. I love the musical, but I appreciate and understand this even as I cry to 'Stay Alive (Reprise).'

    That's a valid observation- I've noticed it too. In fact, even though I knew if Hamilton's existence, I didn't really seek out the music till I had seen both Lin Manuel Miranda and Jonathan Groff on the Late Show. So keep up the promotion, CBS! As wildly popular as it is, there's still a huge amount of people that don't know about it.
