Behind The Making Of Dune

Ойын-сауық

Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated ambitious adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune is finally here after years in the making and multiple delays. With a stellar A-list cast that includes the likes of Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and Dave Bautista, an extremely gifted filmmaker like Villeneuve who has brought us films like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 and to an epic scope on the scale of franchises from the likes of Lord Of The Rings, there has been quite a lot of eyes on Dune. The story follows Paul Atriedes, the son of a noble family, who is entrusted with keeping one of the most vital elements in the galaxy safe. Dune was made on a massive budget which allowed the film’s creative team to really go the extra mile when bringing the planet Arrakis to life. From building actual detailed and layered sets that were meant to enhance the actors and actresses’ performances, filming in extremely high temperatures in the deserts of Dubai and Jordan, and shooting in the mountains of Budapest, the making of Dune is unlike many other blockbusters. Even elements that may seem minor such as the carvings of the sandworms on the wall and the sand the characters walk on, was all made carefully and with a clear vision. It wasn’t all smooth sailing making Dune, as the crew did encounter problems along the way such as lighting windowless locations or having to edit during lockdown where the main editor and the director couldn’t sit in the main room. Even with those hurdles, there is a lot of promise within Dune.

I wasn’t ready for how intense the scenes between Paul and Jessica, when they were on the run, would be. And the fight with Jamis was extremely well done, given how important it was in the story. That shot of Chani, (who just minutes earlier told Paul he would die quickly and with honor for holding her uncles Crysknife) looking at Paul so much awe and respect after he defeated one of their best warriors, nearly brought tears to my eyes.

Here’s a weird thing: in the late 1970s, Ridley Scott was prepping a possible DUNE after Jodorowsky’s version fell through. I mean, everything was so foreign to them on the new planet after losing everything and they’re now having to fight to survive and stay hidden. I think the clip of Paul’s back was to maybe show vulnerability and that “naked” or exposed feeling. I think it ties well to the theme of the story for Paul and Lady Jessica on the run! It was also a cool clip too! I think at first glance, it might have seemed strange to add it in and I understand where you’re coming from.

During the spice harvester and the worm scene, the radio communication between Carryalls and the controller, they kept saying “over”… which in real life, only use in amateur radio communication for leisure and not use in the professional air traffic control situation at all. The Carryall also kept transmitting useless info like “initiating docking sequence” and then literally 2 seconds later “docking sequence initiated”… 🤦🏻‍♂️ Obviously whoever did the dialogue for that scene does not understood the fundamentals of professional radio communication. There are a lot of other things wrong in this movie as well. Another example is whoever design the military uniform does not seems to understand the importance of rankings and the chain of command in military as the uniform does not appears to have any kind of military ranks whatsoever on them at all… This movie is basically shit cover in gold. It just looks absolutely stunning but you really have to turn your brain off to actually enjoy it.

@@Taxon54 It's pronounced in a more international French in this, but yes, it is a correct French pronunciation. If I had to nitpick (and I mean nitpick), I would say the "i"s are closer to the French i than the Quebec i, and also as someone else said, the way he says it at the end would be more correct. You would never say it as VillEneuvE. It would flow more like Vilneuv. My point being, it's not an easy name to pronounce in English and as long as people try their best, I don't think it's offensive. I'd rather see someone do their best and get it slightly wrong, than someone giving up and just pronouncing it like he's an English speaker. The person narrating this video did a good enough job as it is.

Going more practical was a great decision. We see how many films stand the test of time when they use practical effects and it seems like you can touch and smell things. Rather than CGI which dates itself, especially when done cheaply.

Thank the Mahdi that Peter Berg did not get his hands on Dune. He's one of the worst directors out and loves bloated CG. Denis killed it on Dune. I've seen it 5 times in 5 days. Pinnacle of what scifi story telling can be. It will go down with the Blade Runners and 2001s in scifi history.
