Thank you all so much for your patience as I put Part Two together! Hope you enjoy! Oh, and if you have anything to say about the lack of POC Elphaba’s that isn’t along the lines of “Wow, that’s a shame and should be changed,” your comment will get deleted! I think we should petition to have a POC Glinda. Wouldn't it be a wonderful step forward for Wicked to cast Brittney Johnson as the lead Glinda on Broadway.
At this point, I would much rather have a ProShot of Wicked than a film adaptation. Like what Phantom did for its 25th Anniversary & what Hamilton did on DisneyPlus.

@@FormalFilmsProductions yeah I love both the book and musical but the book feels like a darker Animal, the musical feels almost like a prequel to the poppy, family friendly original oz movie, and the book feels like a prequel to the darker, almost nightmarish original book version of oz. Also certain elements feel like they work better in the book, fiyero, in my opinion, should always be black. Honestly my dream would be a miniseries combining the wicked musical and and all of the wicked books, and the original wizard of oz movie and books.

As someone from podunk Utah, I don't get to see all those fun shows. I did see Wicked my last year of college on a Art School trip. Other than that, it's cool to see all the different casts online, and I've bought all sorts of merch from the official site because of it, so it's not like I'm not adding to their wallet. But the obsession is 100% bootleg driven.
Finally, in 2024 it looks like we're finally going to see the first Wicked movie by the end of the year. It's only the first half of the show though.
3:18 I like that Stephanie J. Block was humble enough to choose to do the tour rather than trying to fill Idina's shoes on Broadway even though Idina was chosen over Stephanie to be the original Elphaba on Broadway! It shows a lot of class on Stephanie's Part!

I worked on the show in Toronto and she was an all around kind and wonderful person to everyone at the theatre including the fans who waited at stage door. Didn't matter if it was a two show day or not, she would be out there for as long as there was anyone who wanted to talk to her.

Honestly, I don't think she needed to necessarily be humble. Personal opinion but her acting (whilst less book accurate) was far more accurate to how Elphie's softer personality is in the musical. Idina was chosen mainly because of the fame she had already acquired. Stephanie is technically the first and original Elphaba. She also arguably sang better. So I don't know if she was doing anyone a favour; seeing her as the standby would have been an honor! (and if you ask me as lead...)

I cried my eyes out watching this video!. I first went to see Wicked on the year it opened in London. I then went to see Wicked for my 30th birthday which was over a week ago. The story is so special and one that makes me emotional because like Elphaba I am an outcast too. It’s one of the few musicals I can relate to! 💜.
Also boot leg of wicked can be a good thing becoz it will encourage more people to go see it live. Becoz it is never the same watching it Live!! The magical experience is loss watching on boot leg!
Also the conscious hypocrisy around the whole bootleg thing is so funny omg
I was 16 years old when I first saw Wicked. It was 2014, and I was on a school trip with my other theatre geek peers to England. I get to say that my first time seeing Wicked was at the Apollo Victoria with Savannah Stevenson and Willemijn Verkaik. That was such a special moment in my life that I shared with my friends. I was waiting for part 2 and it didn't disappoint. Brought me to tears! 😢 Love your channel!
Thanks a lot for this beautiful two part documentary. One point - I know sometimes people feel it’s common to see Jewish actress on Broadway but actually this is a form of diversity representation and it’s important to acknowledge it. Especially knowing the rise of antisemitism in US and the rest of the world.
I disagree that it's a story about racism. It a story about how society views differences. I think it's a story for anyone who's ever been made to feel "wrong" for being different. If you are the only one who has green skin, if you are interested in science as a girl in school, if you love ballet as a boy, if you are larger or smaller in size than what's considered "average", or if you are a high-functioning adult with a mental health issues, you often feel like the younger Elphaba in society,.....until you find those that can help you Defy Gravity. 🧙♀️🧙🏾♀️🧙🏿🧙♀️🧙🏼♀️
I love it when the music comes on when some ✨dramatic✨ happens 💀💀💀
I had the honour of watching Alexia Khadime in London when I was 10. It's very rare that I'll come across a performance that matches her incredible energy and characterisation
This video got my sweating through my eyes. 😭 The last bit was very well edited I loved seeing different versions of Elphaba starting with Idina to professionals from around the world to a little boy at home contrasted with an over the top group performance only to circle back to where it started. I will say, however, that the concept of bootlegs hits different during a time when theatre is very limited. It was a 1986 musical based on the famous doll, but it was a broadway flop lasting 5 performances, due to it's dark storyline. Interesting enough, It was a hit in Moscow, causing a documentary to be made. The whole footage of the show is lost, but a audio bootleg survived, and a news report showing footage, Some of The OG cast is still alive including Ivy Austin who played Raggedy Ann, and Patricia Snyder the director. A few years ago they filmed and released a DVD of Miss Saigon in London, filmed on stage and it looks incredibly filmic and I'd love to see Wicked given the same treatment. Yes we are all looking forward to the movie but there is always a fear that it won't capture the magic. I worked backstage at Phantom in London when they released the movie and it was OK to a degree but generally very lacklustre and didn't capture any magic from the stage show - they even cut short the title song and the Phantom's scars were truly forgettable. If Wicked is to work they need to re-create a lot of the Wizard Of Oz sets and make it technicolour. Not sure about the copyright of the look of certain characters, but if it's possible they need to really go in that direction. I can't wait to see a movie, but it needs someone with a true love for the show to make it WICKED!
i got emotional through both parts of this. i remember seeing wicked the first time as a kid and thinking how much i'd want to be one of the witches someday- it's amazing to know that even though i didn't end up pursuing theatre professionally, this was a story many of the cast members and even people in the comments could relate to. wicked truly does connect people

That Laurel Harris story is so beautiful!! I had to back up and listen to her tell it a couple more times before I could go on and finish the video.
Wow. The editing at the end of this video... Bravo. You got me laughing and crying. A fitting conclusion to a fantastic 2-part essay. Thank you for this.
Another amazing video! I got so emotional!! Gotta rewatch part 1 now haha
Fantastic 2 part video, thank you so much, absolutely loved it.
And the way I’ve had tears for the vast majority of this video is so ridiculous!! Bravo!
Thank you! These two videos have made my week! I live in NYC and I miss broadway so much, especially Wicked! Can't wait for the lights to turn on again!
I'd just like to say: Please keep making such quality content. You're doing an amazing thing.
My favorite show of all time! I’ve seen it 4 times on tour (once with Laurel Harris as Elphaba) and once on Broadway!
Yesss!! i’ve been waiting for this one, thank you!!!
Thank you for putting this together and sharing it with us! Great work!
This whole documentary is a TREASURE. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
This was so incredibly well researched and put together. I thought I was fairly knowledgeable about Wicked but I learned so much - I am so curious about the non-replica production, and so thrilled to learn that there has finally been a black Galinda and a black Elphaba (although it's disappointing that there haven't been a lot more and that they didn't start doing this until what seems like fairly recently). I think you did a fantastic job weaving together the disparate parts of the Wicked phenomenon, with all the stuff about the adaptation process, the backgrounds of the creative team, the story of how the show changed between it's first tryout and Broadway, its initial reception (it was so cool that you had interviews with members of the original cast!!), the critical and hehe popular responses, the expansion beyond Broadway, its impact on pop culture and global impact, its legacy and how it needs to change - it was so comprehensive! You reminded me of how moving this story is, and how musical theatre can unite and inspire people and be a force, hehe "for good". Thank you so, so, so much for this peek behind the curtain and for shedding some light on the mysterious process of how Broadway musicals (or hit Broadway musicals) are put together. You are a "wickedly talented" documentarian indeed! I feel like I'm going to come back to this video a lot - but in terms of your future videos - might I suggest Phantom of the Opera as a topic?

Blind casting can be awesome! One of my favorites was a production of a Little Shop, where Seymour was black, and Mushnik was a woman (a-la Suzi from Marvelous Mrs. Maisel style). It was excellent!
Dear patrick thank you for making such a wonderful documentary, for both part one and part two that I had just finished reviewing. I remember lining up for the lottery in New York back in 2007… although I didn’t get the lottery, I got to listen to the soundtrack and learn so much about this show that is sticks in my head 15 years later even! And this superb documentary that you made really help to re-tell the story and celebrate all that talent, emotion, dreams and magic of the story and its cast. I’m so excited I can’t sleep! (And there’s work tomorrow). Anyways, very impressed and a big congratulations to your documentary!!

Dear Jerry, thank you so much for your kind words! So glad you enjoyed it! 💜
BRAVO ! This retrospect was beautifully done. Thank you for producing and putting this on the Internet for all of us to enjoy..
Attended a local showing of Wicked (Minneapolis) and now I'm finding this information helps me understand the details on a much deeper level. There is a place for bootlegs and I highly doubt it hurts box office sales.
Such a gift. A beautiful testament to my absolute favourite musical. Thank you for this.

Thank you for watching!
OMG, Laurel Harris! I knew I recognized that name! She's the Elphaba on the second touring show I saw! Her & Kara Lindsay had great chemistry (though Kara threatened to run away with every scene, lol)! She was the understudy/backgrounder on the first time I saw Wicked as well (but she wasn't Elphaba there). I remember Kara moved on to Broadway, but I didn't realize Laurel did, too. Kara did a neat backstage touring vlog for a while! This series is so great. Thank you so much for doing this.
this made me sooo emotional--absolutely wonderful work, thank you so much for making this documentary!!!!
Bravo! A beautiful, thorough and thoughtful look at Wicked. Thank you!
Great work, loved the videos! Brings back so many good Wicked memories🥰
I’m in tears right now. Thanks for this.
SO well done!!! Loved every second.
both parts are so well put together! Loved every minute of both vids - great job. :)
Wicked got me into musicals. I got to go to New York as my 18th birthday present (I'm from Europe), and the only thing I asked to do while there was to see Wicked, even if I had to go alone (my mother and brother don't really musicals, but they did go with me). It was a dream came true, specially now knowing that 2 weeks later Broadway would close down because of the pandemic. I've seen countless bootlegs (only way to see musical theatre where I'm from) and it only makes me want to see it live more!
Oh I wasn’t expecting the conclusion to bring me to tears but it did. Wicked and Defying Gravity especially mean everything to me. Thank you making this. 😭💚💚
