Behind Movie Town Port of Spain

Have you ever wondered what is behind the MovieTowne complex in Mucurapo Port of Spain? The area behind the Port of Spain Trinidad Movie Towne complex was originally mudflats and a large mangrove swamp. There is a link below where you can see what they previously looked like. A lot of land development work has been taking place on this seaside property adjacent to the Audrey Jeffers Highway in west Port of Spain. In this video we look at what is happening next to the sea.

Pointboy. You are quite right about the backfilling of the Mucurapo wetlands. Everyone has forgotten that where Movietown is located used to be mangrove wetlands, so that land reclamation beginning even before Movietown was on a grand scale as shown by the video. The place where the Port Authority park imported vehicles used to be called Spectrum. I do not need to explain the function of mangroves. But our administrations have a track record of destroying the environment. Years ago, under one, over 600 acres of Petrotrin's virgin forest land at Vessigny was bulldozed to make way for industrial installations. Residents were seeing all sorts of wild animals, birds and other creatures running wild (no pun intended) because their habitats were destroyed forever ! There was destruction of mangroves at Pranz Gardens, Claxton Bay also. Most of our population were not aware, and lots do not care. If ever you are going to Tobago by the inter-island ferry, look at the mountains overlooking the North Coast. You will see getaway villas here and there, poking through the greenery of the Northern Range. Who sold land in the Northern Range ? Who gave permission for an access road to be cut from the North Coast road into the mountain ? Reasons why the big shots are cutting more and more into the Northern Range and when floods occur officials would blame ITCZs and El Nino ! As it is, I edited my previous comment, as someone got offended. I am politically neutral. Please click on the link below: kzread.info/dash/bejne/inWdlbiNg8e6qLg.html

Why is every discussion on issues in Trinidad seized as an opportunity to inject poison? score political points for the party not in power? Is it because of an absence of real love and patriotism? Ambition without love is a hell (literally) of a thing.

Back in the sixties when I was going to Fatima, that whole area, both sides of the river was all wilderness, wetlands and mangrove with lots of little crabs scurrying around. @@TriniMonstera Re-wilding is a great way to go, but the four biggest problems when comes to wildlife in T&T is that (1) greedy developers will stop at nothing to fulfill their thirst for greed; (2) there are some people who are not educated enough about the importance of those wild animals and bees and other valuable insects and the environment around them. (3) that some people just do not care about the wildlife (4) not enough strong enforcement or laws with real teeth for the rules on hunting and environmental care. I remember seeing deer running in T&T (Santa Cruz) back in the 70s that gone, they held someone in South with 35+ agouti in his freezer, the scarlet ibis is being targeted and eaten...it seems like even though there is a hunting season, people hunt year round, Our rivers are becoming dry rivers. it is nonstop raping of the land in T&T, and nobody really cares.. To re-wild Trinidad and Tobago, they first have to make strong laws followed by no-nonsense enforcement and they would need at least a 5 year ban on hunting. But we can only dream :)
