I've been wanting to learn this song for a while now and this video helped me overcome the anxiety! It's so simple to follow. Thank you!
Mark, Thanks for these lessons. They are in excellent format and easy to follow. Anyone prepared to put in the practice cannot fail with your clear instruction. Best lessons I've seen for any instrument. My playing is improving greatly. I really appreciate the effort you put into this site.
Have such a hard time making those iconic hammer ons fit in with the timing when I try to speed it up. God banjos hard. Awesome tutorial. Thank you
This, in my opinion, is the best kind of "lesson". Play it several times, each time slightly faster. Let me watch you play it. I can't learn from the videos that tell you "now play the fifth string, 2nd fret...". I can read tabs, that doesn't help. THIS helps. Thanks!
Thank You so so so so much for your videos. They have been immensely helpful, and extremely motivating. I love playing my Banjo a little more everyday, and it has helped me find a sense of peace and pride that I haven't achieved in a long while. Your easy to grasp and clear lessons have helped a in a large way with that so thank you!
I just find you here and want to say thanks. Great Job, thank you for sharing your talent !
A pleasure to contact you; I play banjo two years ago, and as always played piano and guitar, and I run pretty well. Your explanation of this topic I think one of the best I found. Congratulations and thank you for this. From Buenos Aires Argentina, very cordial greetings and I hope to keep in touch, José Luis God bless you for what you do.
Awesome video can't wait to learn this classic
hi, new to the banjo, have been practising this tune exclusively from your video and am up to 75% speed. Just need to work on getting those rolls working faster, great vid! thanks
Hi Mark, these lessons are great! By far the best videos I've found to start me off on the banjo, switching from guitar. Perfectly sized and melodic enough to keep it interesting while still learning the necessary techniques. Hope you don't mind me making a small constructive criticism - I get the impression that when you play the songs slowly you make the rhythm a lot more metronomic, losing a bit of the phrasing. This likely makes it easier to play along initially but makes it more difficult to get up to proper speed as I don't really have the phrasing right at the slow speed, especially when I'm not familiar with the song. Anyway, keep up the good work and many thanks!

I agree. Vids are great!!! but when trying to speed up it's proves so difficult cuz I practiced on the slow, metronomic version and can't find how he is really playing it when it is up to regular tempo.
Thank you.
I love your videos! They've inspired me to become a banjo player and use my 17th birthday present!
I'm a 'Wardle junkie' come on Mark I need more!
Thank You for the videos, please keep them coming!
great tab! Good lesson!
Excellent vid.
Wish I could play like this. Great post!! 5 stars!!
Great video!
This is great keep em coming
Only just found this (grrr) I'll combine it with the 1st part I've already learned then move on to the 2nd part you've just posted.......Thanks!!
Merci, thank's, un morceau magnifique le plus populaire au USA si ce n'est au monde, grâce à foggy mountain le banjo a repris une nouvelle naissance et ne vieillira jamais. je m'applique a apprendre ce morceau sans défaut.
Never played the banjo before 3 months ago. This was one of the first songs I wanted to learn. So glad to at least have this basic version down pretty good. Thanks for these great videos. Do you have anymore videos on DVD for after these beginner videos?
Hey Mark thanks for all your help! I've gone through all your vids 1-32, and it's taken my father than I imagined. Having a great time with the instrument! Now that I've finished your videos (more to come I hope), and recommendations on how to proceed? Any books I might buy? Thanks again!
Noticed a slight change in your playing of the piece. In the initial piece (slow) you slide but with the pieces that follow you use a slightly different method to achieve a slide by playing the with the index finger down and releasing and playing the next fret middle finger down on the same string quickly......why this way from the initial play ?
Super video, Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🤗
thanks!
nice golden cross! ive got a '78 mahogany cross
Now I just have to get a banjo. Haha. Great tutorials!.
Hi Mark ! The banjo you are using, is it very heavy ? I got a Fender Concert tone 54 and it is reeeaaally heavy. I am new to this topic but can you recommend this one. How is yours ? Thank you and by the way, you taught me a lot and you are awesome ! Regards, Chris

+Calciumchlorid All bluegrass banjos are reeaaaly heavy! They have a big bit of (usually) brass in them! The fender should be ok for a beginner.
excellent. slight mistake, I think, in the tab (or in the playing) on measure 9, the + of beat 2 should be on the 3rd string, no?

you're right, its an open G not an open B. Just to confirm for the learners, not worthy to criticise Mr W as I can't play (yet) :-)
Really nice... I'm just confused about the rolls... What kind of roll is that? Thanks :)
Foggy mt roll is 2 hammers then an open forward roll
gonna learn this on guitar fuck it
I can’t seem to get the first part to sound right for some reason. I’m not sure if I’m off a beat or but maybe you can help me out
tab printing error? last note bar 6 - 11 1st string should be 2 on second fret for a E minor apologies if I'm wrong or other ways to play it
Do you do skype lessons? Your videos are very good and helpful

Hi Rick - Glad to hear the videos are helping you. I'm sorry to say that I don't do one on one lessons any more. My time is tied up on other projects. Keep picking away at the video lessons though and you'll get better for sure :-)
How mnay BPM is the up to tempo part, in this lesson? Thanks
I'm not fast enough... What can i do??

+Sergio gomez Keep playing for a few years! But seriously - don't try for speed too much. Much better to strive for accuracy (ie no mistakes) than to speed up too much and start to fumble. Speed will come with time and accuracy!

This was 9 months ago so I assume you are probably a good bit faster now! But, maybe try out Cripple Creek! It's a bit easier for me to play that one at speed!

Kurtis Parker thank you I appreciate but... i do not have a banjo... my nephews broke the banjo
Listen at 2x speed
It just doesn’t play out right but I’m still playing the pattern right
markwardle Is he skipping notes when playing fast or is he just playing that fast? It doesn't sound exactly the same, it sounds as if you are shaving off notes with speed. Is that true? I'm trying to pick up my tempo but I find it hard to do when it sounds quite different when played slowly.

Canyon Lione - nope - no skipping of notes - it's just that they run into each other more at the higher speed, so this sounds a little different.
