Beginners Semi-Circle Cloak | A Very-Mini Series Part I

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Go forth and swish! Make 2020 the year to be'cloaked (it's like being bedazzled only much better).
One thing I forgot to mention is that if you're taller than average, or your fabric is thinner than 150cm selvage to selvage, you might need to sew two lengths together before you start. If you're shorter than average, you probably won't want to make your cloak selvage to selvage. If you're unsure, in either case, get someone to help you measure from your shoulder to your ankle and use that as the measurement for your compass, from pinned corner to tied chalk device.
Part II will be out in two weeks, so see you then!
For those who wish to see more, you can find me on twitter / dolthalion and Instagram dolthalion...

I'm thinking about making one for myself but I'd rather go for full circle cloak, to make it actually functional, not just fun item. I like how you care about making it nice and neat on the inside. I have some sensory problems, so I'll consider using a french seam for this and my potential future projects.

“I just grabbed a box of potatoes from the kitchen” it’s like you’re the Jamie Oliver of sowing, no faffing just get on with it! In other words you’re making something that is very precise look easy. This is on my list to sew, along with Aziraphale’s shirt - now I just need a decent table and a 28 lb weight loss so I don’t look like a spud - I’m aiming for elegance Lol 😂. Thanks for another fab and inspiring video ! Ok first thing I sewed - and knitted were dolls clothes - very girly girl!

Screw what you think you'll look like, do what makes you happy! I could do with a 28lb loss myself, but if I waited for that I'd miss out on the hobby I love. Besides, the joy of sewing things yourself is that you can fit things so that you look like your best self, so take the elegance you want and run with it! And thank you! Sewing always involves a bit of Macgyvering, but potatoes are the easy solution when your sewing space is right next to the kitchen!

I have a really bad habit of not finishing my projects so I would count my first sewing thing to be... a stuffed doll donkey that I made as a gift. I refuse to count anything I did in school as those projects were never really mine. I also remember having a lime green rabbit made of wool but I have a sneaking suspicion my grandmother was the one who actually sewed that.

in third grade all our art classes were about some kind of thread work, knitting, weaving, embroidery (I ROCKED at embroidery!) my first sewing project was a stuffed duck. It had a button for an eye too. I can't believe they taught that stuff to 8-year-olds back then.

I have been dreaming of a cloak. I think that I need one. :) I can't remember my first sewing project. Mama let me use her scraps to make things for my dolls and the cat - the dolls did not object. The cat did. My first real, finished project was a simple shift dress. Mama gave me a simplicity pattern, a length of pretty print, and left to go see her sister for the afternoon! The dress was always a bit of a disaster (the wear from multiple trys showed at the sleeve top) , but I got the zipper and sleeves set in correctly. I was 10 years old.

Love your videos! So happy the Costube Secret Santa brought me so many inspiring & interesting stitchers to watch... I was taught to sew (and knit & embroider, but not crochet for some reason!) by my mum best part of 60 years ago; the first thing I remember sewing was a skirt for my Sindy doll, one seam, no hem, a *gigantic* button & unfinished buttonhole. I was soooo proud of it! I've been concentrating on knitting of late - so much more portable - but recently started organising my textile stash, sorting out the vintage from the modern, setting aside the natural fibre & getting rid of the man-made, separating the long lengths from the scraps... I was looking for a quick(ish) project to get me actually sewing again, and I think this cloak may be it - can't have too much swish in your life! Thank you!

I don't remember the first thing I sewed (I did more knitting and crocheting from a young age) but I know I dabbled in doll clothes. My aunt was an excellent sempstres so there was really no need really for me to make anything for my dolls. But in middle school (at 13 or so) I created a purse from scratch from an old pair of jeans and an old cotton shirt. It was two rectangles of denim with a continuous strip that ran between them and up to make a strap - think fabric box with an open end and a strap. I fitted the corners perfectly and lined it with the cotton shirt fabric so no raw seams were visible. I used that thing through six more years of school, until it literally fell apart and I graduated. It was a thing of beauty, at least to me. Then I took to copying clothes I had and making more of the same, then skits and simple dresses for work. All hand sewn, since there was no machine in our house. (Ms. Banner might be proud of that). I no longer sew but I do have one last project in mind - I would like to make my own cremation shroud.

I did a bunch of sewing at school (small cushion of some sort, experimental dress with a shoulder-tie, a fairly simple shirt), but I count my first real sewing project as the petticoat I made in the autumn of 2018. It was really badly made, just me whipstitching bits of an old sheet into a skirt shape, but after going over it with a sewing machine (once I got one) it actually worked! And still works! I wear it under long dresses when it’s cold out and it works wonders.

And this was like science meets sewing, talking about using compasses and dividing by pi! I love it. I've always wanted to sew something by hand, but it certainly does take an incredible amount of time and dedication! It's no wonder women used to stay at home and tend the home and the family! And the swishing is most crucial! In fourth grade we had a colonial day with different stations. One was quilting where they gave us four quilt squares and taught us to make a quilt! It was very small but it was fun and very possibly the first thing I ever sewed! It's between that and the blankets I made for my stuffed horses. Cloak is the perfect addition to a prom dress! You should definitely bring one back into your wardrobe! Of all the things I learnt at school, I think circle maths is one of the things that I thought at the time is useless, but I've actually used the most! And sewing by hand has one massive advantage - you can take it with you! You can pick it up for just twenty minutes a day and you don't have to get all the equipment out and then put it away again, and then all of those twenty minutes add up into something great. Learning to quilt at school is so cool! And so is sewing with your mother, I'm glad you got to do that!

All projects are judged before a panel of people who are very knowledgeable in that particular area. There are showman events for the livestock (small and large). Their motto is "To make the best better" and the pledge is: I pledge ... My mom kept it for the longest time. I prefer 3/4 circle cloaks to 1/2 circles, it takes more fabric and more seams but it makes it much more comfortable in the shoulders and ever more swishy. In an entirely different style, Folkwear has a pattern for a kinsale cloak that I've always wanted to make, it looks so regal. Was totally not right for the SCA when I was playing but it would be great for everyday history-bounding now. *ponders available floor space*

That sounds really cute, and pretty accomplished for a 6 year old! I can see why your mum kept it. One of my dreams is to make a full circle cloak one day (and then I'll probably never take it off again. XD) I can't imagine how heavy it would be though! Good luck with the Kinsale cloak, I'm sure you'll find a way to fit the fabric in!

That cloak looks gorgeous! My first sewing project was an elastic waisted skirt - essentially, a rectangle with ends sewed together and elastic in one of the hems. I have a few cloaks at home, but the first cloak I made hand no shoulders and no proper neck (just a hood attached to a large square of fabric). My more recent cloaks are much improved through trial and error Also hand stitching makes me want to cry, so I’m deeply impressed by your dedication to your craft that you’d spend that long hemming a single piece (albeit very large).

  • @Dolthalion

    @Dolthalion

    4 жыл бұрын

Thank you! The hand stitching wasn't too bad, especially on this fabric, because of the loose weave it's ridiculously easy to whip stitch. Honestly, that skirt sounds like an excellent place to start as well, and dealing with elastic is an important thing to deal with too. And who doesn't sew by trial and error! Just some of us have more of it behind us than others, and some do more research before hand so they have less error. XD

Today has been a day where nothing goes right including mending my coat pocket which I worked on while watching. I cant claim the video made everything magically better but it kept me company and kept me going as I worked. Thank you. Edit to answer: the first thing I sewed was an extremely basic and messy apron. But beforehand i practiced on this toy which was a plastic board with holes and a large blunt plastic needle made for yarn. You thread the needle and then you would stitch the yarn through the holes. I think i even had a few big plastic buttons to attach. I loved that thing. For the record i was like 3/4 when this happened. My grandmother was sewing and i wanted to too so she gave me a piece of fabric and three strips. I sewed on one to either side (no where near parallel to each other) for a waist tie then sewed on the neck strap. And then I think some buttons for decoration?

Her machine had two speed-settings. Keeping it on the low one helped a lot. We also made something between messenger & purse bags with lining(!!) out of cotton. They were soo floppy and shapeless. But having a self-made bag at 8yo or so was definitely great!

Sounds like your mum did a really good job of getting you gong with things! And having a two speed machine must have really helped. I want to look into getting a hand turned machine, partly so that when we have kids I can get them going with something that's a bit less scary! I made a bag rather like that at one point as well (I'd completely forgotten about it XD) Do you still have yours?

@@Dolthalion Ah that's lovely, keeping potential future novices in mind :) I purposefully opted for a speed-adjustable machine for similar reasons when I decided I needed my own sewing machine. This was way before stumbling into the realm of historical stuff so it's modern, but still! As for the bag(s), I'm not entirely sure what happened to them. Although I know my mum hangs on to even things like schoolwork from first grade primary school (not all, but more than I expected) so it's possible a few of these projects still exist somewhere :)

Oh! this reminds me... I inherited a few collage books with all cards and drawings etc that I sent to my grandparents in my first 10 years of life. That includes a guinea pig outline embroidery card. I only pricked the tread trough the fabric at corners and had 10cm long stitches do all the heavy lifting. Oh and it has a few beads suspended from these megafloats. Not how I'd do it today but I can appreciate the idea (and efficiency, haha) of my former self ;)

@@liessas If your mum's anything like mine they'll be in a box somewhere that she's not sure about. XD I went home recently and she passed over a certificate that she'd found from primary school that I have absolutely no memory of receiving. I don't even know why she held onto it for so long.

I'm sorry! I need to be better with including imperial measurements as well, especially since I'm classic British and use a combination myself. XD A rough and ready method is to times the centimetres by 2.5 to get it in inches.

My first proper project (apart from mending by hand which I’ve been doing forever) is a nightie. It’s based on a medieval shift (as seen on Morgan Donner’s channel), only I didn’t include arms (because I live in sub tropical Australia and it’s hot here). Of course, I completely got the measurements wrong (don’t make your shoulder measurement the width of the rectangle if your bust is a lot larger than your shoulders), and I didn’t leave a Pugh if a seam allowance, so I was only able to do half the seams properly, the rest I have to measure and cut a kind of tape to sew over the seams. I haven’t finished it yet, because I’m disabled and I can only do a very small bit at a time, which is very frustrating! But I’m going to have to learn to take my time, because when I’m rushing due to pain, my cutting is ridiculously awful. I’ll probably have to figure out a more comfortable way to cut things, because I don’t have a big desk, I can’t do it on the floor, and leaning over the kitchen counter (which is thankfully quite large) is the only option at the moment. But seeing as I can’t stand for more than two minutes at a time, and bending at all is a no no.... I’ll have to figure something out. But it is almost finished. I find it a little strange, learning a new skill so late, but I don’t have the patience to hand sew everything (even if I do think sewing machines are the devil). So I have some very crooked sewing indeed. I figured I’d try a nightie for my first project because it doesn’t really matter if it’s messy. It won’t leave the house. But I am very much looking forward to an actual natural fibre nightie, because like I said- it gets hot. Of course, by the time I finish it, it won’t be so hot anymore. It’ll still be better than my other nighties though (and because I’m disabled, I do practically live in them). Think for next time I’ll try to use a more set type of pattern, rather than trying to figure something out mostly by myself. But seeing as I do live in them, I will be making myself some more nighties- I’ll try some other patterns, some other fabrics (still natural fibres though), some other colours and techniques. But next on my list is apparently a dress for my daughter- from a commercial pattern. And I think I’ve gone in over my head. I should try to do a mock-up first, but not sure I can afford to buy fabric to waste on a mock-up. Might see if we have any old bed linen that we don’t need anymore... It’s definitely a learning curve, but I’m picking up some more knowledge as I go. And I’m definitely adding a cloak on to my list of projects, though likely a half length one (long flowy clothes and wheelchairs don’t mix too well). I wouldn’t mind it lined, and with a faux fur trim- no idea what colour I’d choose though. Maybe a tan.

Well done for persevering! We all make mistakes first time round, and you've learnt a lot that will hold you in good stead for next time. Mock ups are definitely helpful, but obviously they double the work, so maybe trying for a wearable mock up might suit you better? Also, I realise that costs might be an issue, but look into a folding table. We have Norden by Ikea, and it's amazing, it folds down to basically nothing and opens up huge. It is heavy, though, so keep that in mind if you wanted to keep it up against a wall. Even one leaf is big though - it's the table I use to sew on, so you can get a rough idea of how big it is. Good luck with your next project in any case!

The first thing I sewed seriously was a women's Scottish outfit for a friend,. Tartan skirt and vest, white blouse. I messed up the measurements of the elastic, and two people were able to fit in the skirt, but my friend was pleased nonetheless. My second project was a lined velvet cloak. It looked rough, but it was functional and warm. I wore it for years whilst LARPing. Am I weird because I love French seams? I mean, I don't actually enjoy sewing them, but I really love the finished look of them, so I continue to do them.

If your friend was pleased with it, it must have turned out pretty well! Did you manage to take in the skirt eventually? And lined cloaks are the best for staying warm! You're not weird! I hate sewing them, but they're just so much better than anything else for visible seams!

It's probably a bit more of an investment these days bearing in mind how much good wool costs. XD. What a great idea, though! And even these days still cheaper (well, probably) than buying something from a shop, and you get to avoid all the fast fashion!

thank you for the cloak tutorial! i just found your channel and i've always wanted to make a cloak but a lot of the written instructions don't make sense to me. once this whole global plague thing is over i'm going to get some fabric and make one of these bad boys for myself! i have an attempt at a cloak from years ago that was part of a friend's costume and a harry potter robe that i helped model for a friend but i want to make a cloak i can keep and wear.

Hey. New here! Enjoying your videos so far :) The first thing I sew, quite recently, was a long half circle skirt, did all the sewing by hand whilst binging on Bernadette Banner :D Before that I have done loads of crocheting (amispellingthisright??), my favorite were the over the shoulder bags made of tiny linen thread.
