Great overview! Thank you for pointing out the difference between the Block Editor and Gutenberg. WordPress shot themselves in the foot with branding, especially since their "Gutenberg" Plugin gets such terrible reviews in the repository. I don't think people understand that the Gutenberg plugin is meant for beta testing upcoming releases, and the thing they've been referring to as Gutenberg is actually the Block Editor. It's the same branding issue they now have with FSE/Site Editor/Block Templates/etc.

I have a question, sir .. what do you think about different builders and their third-party Plugins... I just want to know your thoughts on WordPress builders Pro & Cons... caparison is builder & They're a lot of plugins that make the Web code bloated and slower .

Thanks Jonathan - I've been bobbing around in the wilderness with WP over the years and, via a host of page builders, themes, mixing plug-ins, naive beliefs too and all kinds of other dead ends, I realise that the environment/community is as important as the tools. Learning is part of this so I've landed on GB/GP and am determined to crack this. You (and a couple of others will be at my side), so thanks again. One question re elemental stuff: what units for what purpose? VH/%/Em/Rem/px - i just go ermm 😂

I am using the Twenty Twenty-Three theme and one of the issues I'm currently having is that I need to add custom functions but there is now functions.php file. What is a work around for this? Would I create a child theme and then a functions.php file or is it better to use a plugin like Code Snippets or WPCodeBox?

Great vid! But I noticed GeneratePress is considered a Classic theme, not a BLOCK theme. So I guess it's not fully making use of the full site editing of core WordPress? Would you be able to explain more what the differences are? or if it would be smarter to start with a "block" theme instead? Thanks!!

Nice video but you still added dependencies with Generate. How far do you think the average DIY'er could get with the core block editor and the 2024 theme?

Super helpful video, thank you! I've built/managed WP site for 15 years, but have been avoiding adopting blocks so far. I have a question: I've just been asked to update one page on an existing site that I did not build. The site uses blocks. Can I get away with doing this without the two plugins you mentioned, or will I be really limited? The site has a custom theme and was built by a developer. Blocks is the only CMS on the back end. Thank you!

Glad it was helpful! You can definitely do quite a bit with the Core blocks, but you might be limited in some of the styling controls. If you're looking to add basic content and sections, Core should be more than good enough. You can also install GenerateBlocks free and it'll help quite a bit, but then you kinda have two separate systems going - the custom theme and GenerateBlocks. Depends on what you need to do, though!

All right, Johnathan... you got me into this mess ;-/, so... hope you can let me know what I can do about this. I followed your tutorial as best I could and my domain name opens up into a "This is your first post"... instead of opening up into a Home page I've created. What am I doing wrong. Thanks for introducing me to Blocks and once I get past this issue, I think I'm on my way. Appreciate your help or anyone else's help from this comment thread.

Go to Settings > Reading (or Appearance > Customize > Homepage Settings) and toggle between 'Your latest posts' and 'A static page'. This is basic WP functionality, not Gutenberg.

Now How does a person edit dynamic content on each unique page so it doesnt duplicate. I am not understanding how I can build a template called Pages, where there are three blocks that have an image and content. I want the ability to have A NONE ENGINEER OR DEVELOPER to go in, change whatever content he wants per page, per block. Because as of right now, its all duplicating.
