Beginners Guide Speed Turn Rate! DPS Irrelevant without It! How To STO

Ойындар

I think this subject has been underrated, If you are out of position or in the wrong place, does your build or anything else really matter? In this video I discuss Speed and Turn Rate as well as some techniques to stop your ship from sliding out of position. Having the ability to move quickly as needed means you wont show up to parts of the map just as everything died. Being able to increase your turn rate when needed will allow you to quickly position your ship to take the most advantage of your builds layout. Speed Turn + Rate = participation = FUN in Star Trek Online!
*Piloting will most likely be the next thing we will need to do a video on.

Hey it's exposition guy here. In order to unlock the Alhena patrol, you must do the first mission of the Specters arc. It's called Skirmish and it is only accessible from the Available tab once you hit end game. You used to, in years past, be able to do that mission as part of every faction story somewhere in the 20's-30's level range. Now it is locked to end game. You can get four Deuterium from the patrol. You didn't finish the conversation and just exited the sector. If you finish the closing conversation, you get a fourth one. That is, admittedly, picking knits but that's sort of what I do. Once you unlock it for crafting, you'll only visit that sector again if you really, really like killing Cardassians. :) As to the rest, I understand what you are saying but I just don't seem to need all of that stuff. I am constantly getting crits that procs Intelligence Agent Attaché. I have Deuterium Surplus in case, but I have never really needed that EPtE Conn Officer doff. If Evasive Maneuvers is on cooldown, I just fire off the Deuterium burn. I have used all of those other methods, but I find that I rarely ever needed them. Then again, I only ever run PUGs and thus don't do Elite group content. My only Elite content is solo. With all that said, I do terrible DPS because I despise, to the core of my soul, the "sit 'n' spray" methodology of the DPS meta. I like to stay in constant motion. While I have the damage output to do much more, I sacrifice a lot of that DPS potential for fun. One of my favorite builds was a Pilot Risian Escort that I built as a FAW boat. Crazy fast. I did use everything you mentioned on that build and it was so fast that I often would end up out of weapon range if I diverted my attention from piloting that thing. I was only averaging about 50k DPS in ISA (normally I hover around the mid-90's), but so much fun. I sometimes feel that chasing the DPS meta is more akin to a job than a game. Edit: Changed the wording to properly identify Critical Hits as the proc for Intel Agent. Was momentarily conflating Intel Agent with One Impossible Thing at a Time. Note that the latter is running for about 200-500k on the Exchange, making it a good budget alternative to Intel Agent.

With smaller ships like Pilot Escorts and a destroyers you typically don’t want to defeat the slide. You want to use it. Turn rate is more important for some maps. (Just not so much ISA). One trick when charging across the map using full impulse towards a pack is you come in firing, as soon as you drop out of full impulse and start firing, you spin, basically using the momentum to drift or do a bootlegger turn past the enemies, leaving you positioned firing into their flanking arcs as you trigger all of your initial damage. I’m probably not describing this well. Do note this is not a recommended maneuver or strategy for Borg. As sailing straight through a pack of Borg in a squishy escort tends to end badly.

Flying like this is so much more difficult on console. Having the impulse engines on the D-Pad means moving your left thumb off of your turn stick to speed up and slow down. It's maddening.

Great video, thanks! I got a Universe class on my main character years ago but only every goofed around with it. At the time I didn’t have competitive engines so it was a horrible bloated whale... I got it out of dry dock to play with it again yesterday, the difference is absolutely night and day once competitive engines are on there! It’s like an escort! I’m looking forward to speeding it up more with the rest of the tips in the video!

I start TFOs with full impulse to get to the enemy fast even though I do not have many speed enhancers. On a big map I slot power to engines, but only use it at full impulse because it increases full impulse speed.

This vid showed me the worth of reputation boxes as well as controlling 'sliding on ice.' Boxes started with a bunch of ground wpn I normally sold off (wish I could account share to my other toons). I'm starting to get some interesting combo consuls - esp eng & sci. -- only discovered reputation leveling via 'nutter vid on Dil sourcing. Earned the rep marks when I had nowhere to spend my Fleet Marks (now there's a subject I find 'Catch 22'-ish). I need to research how I'll earn nuff FC to buy flt stuff once a fleet's holdings near max and can't earn much.

I don't care for DPS competitive stuff, but they're great for covering ground and carrying Best Served Cold runs. Can't wait to try them out when Synth Wave is available on PlayStation servers again. Gonna save ALL the Mars engineering teams!

Grats on 1k subs; can't lie I do feel pretty weak as a newer player compared to some of the strong people. I have gone through Breach tfos without shooting anything but a few hard points; it actually happened in my very last tfo and I only saw the guy who solo'd it at the very start. He was zooming lol. I do tend to avoid tfo in favor of patrols now; I feel like if I do normal it is too easy but advanced I do meet people vastly above me, I don't usually die but I don't feel too useful.

The feeling that you are not doing enough is what drove me to learn, practice and ultimately discard, the DPS meta. A lot of MC Stu's videos are geared at the lower to mid-grade and I appreciate his efforts to educate people on how to get into a decent standing within the context of DPS play. You don't have to be #1 in order to contribute to the team. Let's take ISA. I know, for a fact, that there will almost always be somebody that can out-DPS me in there. So I decided to start Tanking. Not just being tough, but full on Threat tanking. I know I'm not going to pull the highest DPS score but I will almost always pull the highest Attacks/Damage In score. Rather than trying to out-DPS the other guy, I decided to make the team DPS and survival better. If I am running a Sci toon, I stay in the middle and deal with those pesky Nanite Repair Probes. My Sci toon can easily pull a 120k+ and survive an Elite Beta Thoridor patrol but I feel like it is my job as the Controller, to lock down those mobs. I am not rewarded extra for it. There are few to no bragging rights to go along with it. I just feel satisfied when none of those little probes make it out of the center. The DPS chasers are a very vocal sub-community on Reddit but the truth is, they need a good team to get the most out of their builds. Tanking or Science/Control is relatively easy to do well by comparison. As far as the Solo Breach guy, some people just don't know when to turn off that sense of individual achievement to help out the team. Sometimes, people can be weird. My own Breach horror story involves running a new-ish toon (about level 22) through the event and the rest of the team backed off and watched as the Voth ships in the Subcore surrounded me and tore me apart. Then, once I was dead, they all swooped in to destroy the Voth ships with ease. Some players are just asshats.

What is the direct relationship between between engine power points and turn rate? For example, does each 1 point into engine power mean +1% turn rate? Or does it only alter the base turn rate of the ship?

  • @MCStu

    @MCStu

    Жыл бұрын

That will vary depending on your skill points, consoles that effect turn rate and your ships impulse/turn rate modifier......

  • @chrismetcalf1261

Simple question...when trying to decide on a ship I always look at the base turn rate but never found anywhere how that works. By that I mean a more agile ship(straight out of the box) has a lower base rate or higher the number means you turn faster? I would assume the higher the base rate number the faster it turns. Correct?

I've got two gripes with the high speed DPS players who wipe a TFO clean before the rest of us arrive at a target: First, they're playing a different game with different goals to the average player in STO. I'm not interested in spending 2 minutes queuing and another minute for the NPC to give us the low down, just to beat the TFO in 30 seconds. That ain't my idea of fun. That wastes my time. It interrupts my enjoyment of the game. I am not interested in building a ship to do that. If that's your idea of fun, GLHF, but can you not do it in a PUG? Second, a Vaadwaur Juggernaut zooming around like an escort is hilariously immersion-breaking. When I see one of those Juggs in a TFO, I go in the other direction.
