Beginner White Mage Guide [Final Fantasy 14]

Ойындар

White Mage absolutely crushes dungeons in Final Fantasy XIV. A lot of people suffer from healxiety or, even if they do pick up healer, worry too much about the tank's mental health. Throw on that white robe and learn to let those tanks suffer a bit. This video guide covers White Mage's role in higher level endgame dungeons, but a lot of what I go over can apply to newer players and transfer into harder 8-man content. We'll cover the best ways to keep your tank moving and mobs dying, with gameplay and ms paint graphs to help.
All game knowledge is current as of Patch 6.2 in FFXIV Endwalker!

0:45 Keeping the Tank Alive

    I main White Mage and there was some helpful information in there. First, there's the reminder to use Assize whenever possible, and to look for opportunities to use Presence of Mind ... or just remembering it exists and using it whenever. Also, I assumed that Asylum just applied a HoT to everyone inside; I overlooked the 10% increase to all healing received, so thanks for making me aware of that. 👍 Another thing I found useful was loading my crossbar with all the spells, including the ones I haven't learned yet. That way, I get to figure out where everything goes in advance, so I'm not potentially moving stuff around and having to retrain my muscle memory whenever I learn some new spells.

    Awesome, glad it helped! :D And very good idea about pre-setting up your bars; anytime I pick up a new job or a new one comes out, I love to do that. Gets you thinking about how things will string together at endgame, too, and gives you things to look forward to!

    It makes me happy to see another jump-spin-DoT-spinback player~ It's rare I come across WHM guides that mention just about everything we'll be doing, general priorities and all. Absolutely love this video, thank you for it! I don't think there's much to add here for dungeons outside of extra niche bits that are often dungeon specific. I guess a few small ones for the readers here: --If you play other healers primarily, you may not be aware that Holy's radius is actually 8y and not 5y. You can often hit the majority of mobs when on the edge of standard-AoEs. Take advantage of its larger AoE! This has some application in certain 8 man content as well. --Lilybell is often extra-superfluous for dungeon healing at 90, but don't feel bad using it in trash if your tank needs an extra boost. Can push a lily use from in-combat to out-of-combat. If you feel like it can sometimes stand in DoT fields solely to heal the tank more. --If it REALLY COMES DOWN TO IT, Medica II at 85+ is straight up stronger than Cure 2 pending the pull lasts 4 server ticks longer and the tank doesn't need the Cure 2 burst. Pair it with PI and it's superior after 3 ticks. It's superior pre-85 with PI as well. Very minor difference for dungeons, but a difference all the same. I pray you never find yourself in a situation where you're actively considering this difference in normal mode content. But rare as they are, very special groups DO pop up now and then~ --8 Man addendum: Likewise, Medica 2 is often a superior choice over Cure2/Regen for two-tank fights if they are taking significant damage. And, likewise, Rapture or PI+Rapture is often a better use of a lily if healing two-tank damage. Burst heal if needed, but otherwise your HoTs and Rapture put in a good amount of work. -Also two tank - PI Cure 3 is equivalent to Cure 2 and can be used to quickly top off two vuln-happy tanks. Again these are...pretty minor small things especially for dungeon content. Of course, as many are aware you want to minimize your non-lily GCD healing, but when the situation arises that you've gotta grit your teeth and go at it - minor things like this can help a tiny bit.

    Perfect Tutorial. This is exactly how WHM is supposed to be played in dungeons. If your group does dmg and the tank knows how to use mitigations, you will never have to cast a GCD Heal (besides the lilys) ever. Thanks for the video! Hope more people will see you and your guides and we will have less cure-spamming lvl 90 whms in the future

    Thank you for the endorsement! :D I love how much healers change as they learn the role. People coming from other MMOs or even just plain new to healing can't necessarily be BLAMED for wanting to do more GCD healing than is necessary, especially if they don't really yet "get" how FFXIV damage works (bursty rather than constant), but it's something that should ideally be "unlearned" for sure. PS - Never mind cutting Cure spam entirely, I'd settle for just not seeing Cure 1!

    @@specstreTV might have been more annoyed than needed to be, after some atrocious expert runs xD sorry for that. You are right of course, everybody starts ffxiv with different levels of knowlegde and there are games out there that have the healer role in a group, that is really only supposed to keep the group alive. I think my biggest problem is not that there are cure (1) spamming whms - its more that you really notice that they didnt even try to put in the effort to learn the job at least on a basic level. I love helping sprouts out, when i notice them being actually attentive and interested in advice. And its amazing seeing them succeed a dungeon or trial afterwards. I am really talking high level stuff and people who are done with the story and still only use like 20% of their kit. Without getting into the problem of buying level-skips, that is a story in and of itself. But going all 90 levels without reading what your new skills do just baffles be. I have actually met so many whm in 90 content, that never even used their ogcd heals, as though they dont exist xD So, i just wanna see people put in a tiny bit of work. And with videos like yours, it's really really easy to see the overall picture of healers in ffxiv. So thumbs up to you again, specstre! ;)

    This is a really amazing video full of A+ advice, I main WHM, it's honestly my favourite job, and if you're new to healing I recommend picking it up as it's a very good kit to onboard you into balancing DPS and Healing. I saw someone in the comments mention Plenary Indulgence, and no lie, that's one of the first things I tell people to use once they get it at lvl 70. It often gets overlooked but it has great utility. It's paired with Cure 3, Medica 2, and Rapture. Lasts 10 seconds, but it boosts the HP recovery of those tools with 200 cure potency, which is amazing when there's a lot of incoming AoE damage you need to heal through. Really helps with large pack pulls when you don't have access to Temperance (lvl 80). It's also A+ when progging new content, giving your MP more mileage as everyone perishes through the learning curve ;3 One thing to note on the Blood Lily, is don't be tempted to spam your Rapture/Solace JUST to proc it. It's a DPS loss over casting Glare. Like Specstre mentions in the video, use 1 to 2 during the down-time between pulls so you don't overcap. But during actual combat, trying to force a Blood Lily is a damage loss. Your Blood Lily will generate very fast if you're prioritising Lilies for healing over Cure 2. They also generate much faster now at 20 seconds per lily (used to be 30 seconds).

  • @specstreTV

    @specstreTV

    Жыл бұрын

    Plenary Indulgence (which I lazily usually just shorthand to Confession and often forget the actual name of...) is absolutely a game changer. Once you get comfortable using it (and knowing when), it really does dramatically increase your healing throughput. Confession + 2 Raptures pretty much tops the entire raid! Regarding Blood Lily - yes, good point that farming Lilies in AoE is not ideal and it's much better to use them between packs in dungeons, though technically, Misery IS DPS neutral on single target ever since they buffed it to 1,240 potency (310 + 310 + 310 + 310 =1,240, so it crosses out the 4 lost glares). There's also some egghead math about Misery being a GAIN over 4 Glares inside raid buffs, but again, that's a little deeper. Either way, great comment, ty so much! :D

    That’s awesome!! I came from black mage, so similar caster -> healer pipeline, and I have to say it’s a pretty easy transition to make. you’re basically giving up some complexity in your rotation in exchange for the additional minigame of juggling raid damage / healing people up. that said, for smn/sch specifically, those two jobs have never been further apart than they are now, LOL. They used to share a LOT of abilities, but between the SMN rework in EW and the smaller SCH rework in SHB, it’s pretty hard to spot many common connections. #1 thing you can do, and it’s cheesy advice, but is to just play and not worry about performing too optimally yet. because of your caster background, you should be able to comfortably DoT and broil spam, which is 90% of your GCDs at every level of play (past like, level 40, anyway.) principles like “always be casting” and mechanics like slidecasting transfer 1:1. basically, the biggest (only?) challenge will be learning all the SCH tools and when to use them, which again, will come trial and error. Don’t be afraid to GCD heal to your comfort, and of course, relish in the glory that is a crit Spreadlo.

    Loving your videos, WHM was my intro into healing back in ShB when I'd only ever played tanks. I still love it after the Thin Air nerfs (I miss Bozja shenanigans where I was the biggest DPS and could heal when Seraph Strike fell off without worrying about mana 😅). I've since branched to other Healers and SCH has been my main for EW, even taking on some Savage and Extremes and oh boy it's scary sometimes 😱 I can't wait for more videos and I'm grateful you popped into my recommended. To "add on' (pun intended) to the other response explaining the window (ACT), it's a super not important add-on most people will never find a use for except to track personal statistics in high-end content (like savage/ultimate). If you get something like that, it should only be used to measure your own performance for personal improvement. However; you can learn and improve without one just as well. Some people just like seeing raw data.

    When you're first learning to heal it's A-Okay to worry about keeping people alive, you're getting used to your new tool kit, and you're learning how to manage your MP, and learning how well different tanks mitigate their damage (new vs experienced vs level etc). It's easy to get overwhelmed trying to do all the best tips and tricks when you're new. But as you learn, you'll start get a feel for those DPS windows, and the optimisation will follow from there. WHM is really fun (and so are the other healers), so absolutely take the time to learn your tools first before trying to maximise DPS. Confidence! You've got this! :D

    Divine Benison and Aquaveil's effects stack, and throwing both on the MT just prior to a tank buster minimizes needing to waste MP on healing the tank afterward, leaving you free to dps. During trash pulls, once the tank has gathered all the mobs together, after the 1st holy, slap a Medica2 on the party before going back to holy spam. Use this in between lilies to keep the party HP up and reduce the chances of your DPS dying from aoe once all the mobs gain stun immunity.

    Thank you so much for the kind words! :D Don't stress about healing too much. If you can kind of let go of ideas about failure / embarrassment and just focus on enjoying your job, things slot together quickly. There ARE a lot of buttons to learn, especially big oGCDs, but if you keep at it with your core tools, you'll slowly learn where the "gaps" are and can start looking for answers from your other abilities. People are taking damage you can't heal? Look at using Temperance (your level 80 ability). Need fast healing / recovery for MORE damage coming up? Consider putting down Asylum. You aren't expected to use every tool every moment, but they're there to help you, and if you let them do their job, YOURS becomes a lot easier! And while you might come across the occasional bad apple who blames the healer for a group death, truth is, mitigation is a team job and EVERYONE has things they could've done to help. A lot of people understand that though, and I don't think you'll encounter nearly as much toxicity as you might expect! Best of luck :D

    Medica 2 is DEFINITELY your best GCD AoE heal, and if the party is getting pounded and you need the help / are out of Lilys, it’s a great tool. Using it proactively however isn’t super efficient in most cases, especially in dungeons, because it’s pretty rare for DPS to take damage unless it’s on a boss. If that happens, it’s STILL usually light damage and can be covered with other things. Put another way, Medica 2 is kind of a superweapon at like 1000 total potency (250 initial heal+5 ticks of 150), and totally overkill UNLESS you’re running low on options and those regen ticks will actually go toward healing and won’t overdo it. Try to use the FEWEST GCD heals necessary, since WHM has a such a wealth of good oGCDs + Lilys, but at the end of the day, if the party needs help, their lives ARE more important than your damage. TL;DR - like many things on healer, it depends, but avoid overhealing where possible and maximize your time spent DPSing! Edit - And also, it actually doesn’t last THAT long, so stopping to throw a Medica 2 out between pulls will usually just slow you down and it’s unlikely to get a ton of mileage by the time the pull comes to a stop and the damage begins. Good instinct to think about regen stacking though! :D

    Get a feel for how soon the Tank will take damage. If you pop benison early, like say right as they're moving, by the time they stop, benison will be off or nearly off cool down again, and your tank will be much healthier for it. This means you can stave off a heal for one or two more attacks. While I like the holy spam, my personal opinion is that if a pull is going to be really big(like 10+ mobs), it might be more beneficial to you to stagger our your holy spells until stun immunity kicks in. Less healing means more damage, though it is at the cost of single target vs multi-target, so while the damage uptime is more, the potency is less. It's more of a flavor thing at that point though. You can be the one single targeting the highest health monsters so that your DPS with an actually good potency, low cast/cooldown AoE can wipe em all out at once. Or you can just holy spam because at the end of the day 6 more seconds of stun won't break the bank. And yeah, pop benediction as often as it's off cooldown. It's a free reset for fuckups, if it were meant to be a tank savior solely for final bosses then every healer would have benediction. The game is not designed around it, so keeping it up all the time is a waste of a perfectly good 100% HP heal.

    Super interesting idea with staggering Holy! I think if your tank is struggling with mit, it could definitely help, but of course mobs will die slower, so that's more potential time they're taking damage at the tail end of the pack. Still, I could see some use cases. The real damage is in the crit Assizes we pressed along the way!

    @@specstreTV I definitely think once stun immunity kicks in, that's when you should repop regen, keep tetra or benediction on hand, and spam presence of mind + holy and maybe lucid or thin air to really help wipe the damage out. But especially in the case of popping DoTs I feel staggering stuns to help pop the last couple ones out could be helpful. This is all really niche though when it boils down to it. We're talking like a window of 4-6 attacks between all our stunned Holy casts. At the end of the day it's really not that much, which is why I think it's more preference and variety.

    As a healer main who is recently training my tank classes, I want to shout and scream at all the WHM that don't use regen. You're not doing your job when you don't put regen on the tank when they start their pull, don't refresh regen in the middle of their pull, and you're not doing your job when you neglect to cast regen and straight up letting the tank die to a dungeon boss that has no mechanics. And before anyone says anything, this happened four times on a single day, in a lv65 dungeon, and all of these healers were LV90 WHMs. I've since set up an auto translated "WHM Regen. Please use it. " macro on the hotbar, and I've since encountered two more WHM that just aren't using regen at all and I had to kick these healers when I was forced to Hallowed Ground, died anyway, came back up and Hallowed Ground again but died again. USE YOUR FREAKING REGENS PEOPLE OR BE CONSIDERED A HEALER DEGEN!!! As long as you use Regen as a WHM, you only ever need your ogcd stuff like assize, asylum, divine benison and "oops you're below half health have this" tetragammaton. It's very easy to just straight up never touch a lily in lv80+ content, and you gotta delibarely throw lilies in the air to purposely nourish blood lilies.

I don't want to say -too- much in case it'd spoil anything (however minor) about the story for you, but if you're already in Endwalker and/or don't care, it's the "Appointed Jacket" and looking that up should tell you all about the NPC / the deliveries. I'd have to log in to get you the names of the other pieces and I can't atm, but they're all pretty basic / lower level and super customizable. The jacket goes well with a lot of things!

Was this video only to demonstrate the damage potential of white mage? It looked like the sage had much more healing done with much less overhealing. Any recommendations or advice?

  • @specstreTV

    Welcome to the game!! :D Honestly, it's hard to really split up "healer damage" from "healer healing" in FFXIV. Regardless of the level of play you're looking to get into, healing in this game is VERY DPS-oriented. All 4 healers do MOST of their healing through oGCDs, the spells they weave in between their generic DPS spam. That's not STRICTLY true at lower levels where you don't have all those tools unlocked, but certainly by endgame, 95% of your GCDs will be DPS spam, even in the hardest content. White Mage is kind of the training wheels healer because it still has two very solid, very reliable GCD heals in the form of Afflatus Rapture and Afflatus Solace, which are an AoE and single target heal, respectively. The gimmick here is that WHM gets refunded for those casts with those "Blood Lily" charges, which it can spend on a big DPS nuke to "make up for" the lost GCD damage. That said, Sage DOES probably have an overall better healing profile. WHM is very good at bursty nuke heals, but Sage has a lot of oGCD damage mitigation, HoTs, and even a good bit of burst healing itself. At the end of the day though, all 4 healers will serve you just fine in 99% of all game content. They're also all pretty similar, with only slight mechanical differences. If one healer in particular is aesthetically or conceptually calling to you, try it out!

    "White mage is a great job at all levels of play" I dunno, the hardest part of playing white mage is getting synced into that painful selection of levels in the early 50s where cure 1 isn't worth casting and you don't have healing options besides the regens and cure 2 because holy mp batman. I definitely think until you actually get tools like Afflatus and Benison, every other healer is much better built. Not that this niche window of synced content is particularly relevant, but it's worth bearing in mind that White Mage takes a few more levels to really get going than the others, especially considering we're all one bad levelling roulette away from a breakdown

If as WHM you got any decent healing parse, it means you suck at healing and using medica 2 way to much overhealing instead of doing dps, or it means your shield cohealer suck by not applying shields and insta lowering your parse at same time.

    White Mage definitely has its strengths, but so do the other healers! WHM is leading this tier in raw damage (as far as I'm aware), but Sch has amazing party utility and brings a raid buff that EVERYONE benefits from, not just itself! AST has some amazing healing tools that totally dwarf WHM, and SGE, while maybe the weakest in SOME contexts, has some really, really amazing and low CD mitigation with abilities like Kerachole. You're right that it's always a balancing act and some jobs will always have slight leads on others, but you can play any healer and find serious endgame success! A lot of top-level teams have even run SCH/SGE for fights :D

    As far as healers are concerned, balance is pretty okay right now : (at 95 percentile) SCH rDPS : 5715 AST rDPS : 5729 SGE aDPS : 5773 WHM aDPS : 5890 SCH has about 3% DPS difference with WHM, and that's prob because you can squeeze a blood lily under raid buffs, which can crit/dh for like 100k. Now is we're talking about Healing balance itself, that's something I agree on.

    I find Scholar's (Bane pls) and Sage's AoEs to be plain better than Holy. The ability to double-weave on every GCD while keeping the tank targeted is just too good. The stun is nice, but not really that necessary.

  • @specstreTV

    @specstreTV

    Жыл бұрын

    This might sound a little fence-sitty, but I think they're all good in their own ways. Art of War's damage is nuts (180 potency > 150 on on Holy), but especially in unoptimized content like dungeons, I find the stun really softens the curve with tanks who maybe don't mit that well. On the other hand, while AST's Gravity does peanuts for damage, being able to cast it at range feels really good in some situations like LL in TEA, where you're stuck baiting a tornado but can hit both bosses and so get a nice boost to your DPS. All depends on the context! Edit - I'll also add that Holy has a 3y bigger range than AoW/Dysk, which lets WHM hit adds w/ its AoE that SCH/SGE can't. Both EX 1 and EX 2 in Endwalker come to mind-EX1 especially has an add phase where ONLY WHM can hit all 4 adds since they're fixed in place and a pixel-perfect WHM in the middle of the arena can tag all 4.
