I'm 54 and just started trying to learn how to box. I may never even graduate to sparring, but I now have respect for combat athletes. It's like learning gymnastics, but someone is trying to punch you in the face.

Did you not respect sports combatants before training or did it just make you think more about it? Genuinely curious, not trying to troll your comment. What made you start at 54? Congrats on your journey though. Combat sports changed my life and I hope you have a long relationship with them. Good for the soul and thinking, which is opposite of popular belief.

@@robertherbst9487 I just meant to say that I didn't really know much about it before. I probably should have said that it has given me an appreciation for combat athletes. I started BJJ about a year ago, because I had gotten into strength training and thought it would be a good extension. Honestly, I'm in way over my head. From there, I started learning about striking (well, learning how little I knew about it to be honest). I"m never going to be more than a beginner at either, but they're new ways to move my body and develop skills. I wish I had started younger!

@@dukenukem8253 nice! Be careful about rolling. Spazzy white belts and big strong white belts are the most dangerous. Tap early tap often and don't train at the competitive level if you don't intend to compete. Those dudes roll different. Very cool story and I wish you lots of luck. Last side note, cardio is king in combat sports. At your age and level I'd personally say work on cardio and flexibility over strength but that's coming from me and I'm only 5'7" 160lbs.

@@hybridwarriortraining I always use the term "Putting out a cigarette butt" on the ground especially when teaching a left hook I refer to as a 3 punch. If you're not rotating on the front of your foot, you are not engaging your hips as much and relying more on the speed of your arm for power and speed. Kind of hard to explain online. The only thing I really teach differently than you do is weight distribution. I do not teach it to be the same all of the time because that is impossible during movement especially during exchanges where you are bobbing and weaving and returning punches. But overall, you're teaching A+ instruction.
