Really good tip about taking photos of your motorbike before you leave the place you are hiring from, this actually saved me once! Also the horn can be your best friend in Thailand or Vietnam, use it! :D

+David Petrie haha... the horn is a good one. Vietnam is nuts with the horn. But so is India. I'd use the photographing your bike, even with rental cars! i learned this by getting scammed by a car rental. ;)

+Sondema Tarr It's easy to learn but I had to practice it some before going out, unless it's possible to drive without making any turns. haha. Depending, you can see if there's any motorbike classes/tours in Thailand. It might be relatively inexpensive there or just pay a local to teach you! =D

Hey, Christine. Thanks for sharing. Question-If you don't know how to shift the gears like on a full sized motorcycle in America like a Harley or Kawasaki sports bike/crotch rocket- do automatic transmission/no gear shifting needed motorbikes commonly exist for rentals in South East Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam, or Indonesia? Thanks.

  • @grrrltraveler

Most motorbikes/scooters seem to be automatic and friendly to beginners. That's the overall peaceful workhorse for local people and kids; especially b/c families can't afford much and that's their station wagon. I have never rented a motorcycle. I don't know if they exist there

  • @josephramirez557

So zero shifting involved??? Only brakes and gas/accelerator to stop and go like a common automatic transmission sedan is designed.

It’s a humble CVT setup, you twist your right wrist to increase throttle when you wanna speed up, and to slow down you pull on the left lever to apply rear brake and right lever to apply front break.

I rented a car in Malta which they drive on the left side also. The Avis rental agent gave me a car which will become broken within a couple of days. However, I parked the car and used public transportation because I do not drive on the left side of the road. The day I was leaving the car stop dead at the airport and I told them where to get the car. I used my visa and they did charge me over $800 for the repairs but my visa company charged back the $800 to Avis because they knew that the car was not sufficient to rent. Since Malta is in the European Union that is the only reason why I got my money back. So, therefore, you are very right to make sure you take video and photos. Great Video

+The Good Life Some places purposely give you lemons, especially if you don't take insurance. That was the case when I rented a car in LA thru Enterprise. I declined the collision insurance because I already had it. So they pulled a scam and gave me a dinged car... in a place where I wouldn't have looked. practically under the car and they tried to pin it on me. I asked for that car's damage report for the past 6 months (ie all the renters experience with that car before me). They gave up the case... ... Because it was a car they were using to scam folks with. Video taping the safety inspection with the agent there was something I should've done. So now, I videoo tape everything.

+Story Killers ... for some reason I can't reply to you. If you ride bikes often at home... It's definitely crazier and Bangkokians have their rules about lanes for bikes & passing lanes. You''d have to research that. I have an expat friend who navigates it fine, but he's gotten ticketed and the police expect a pay-off.

Thanks for the video! My story - we saw lots of similar videos, and we thought it would be easy. We got the bike and went to some place away from the road to practice. I was sure i couldnt drive it, but my girlfriend was supposed to drive us both. After 2 hours of practicing we gave up))) its f*king scary! This thing speeds up very fast, and when you want it to slow down you intuitively pull it, but you are holding the gas thing so it just goes faster))) we both drive cars and bycicles, but it didnt help with bikes))) its heavy and hard to operate and even after practicing we didnt feel confident. So we spent all 5 days in patong))) its good we planned phiphi, krabi and bangkok after it)))

My partner and I are travelling to Vietnam in September and are planning on buying a couple of bikes. Before we're going we're going to get some training on how to ride them because I don't want to learn over there. It costs about £150 to do the 1 day training in the UK but I think it'll be worth it. Maybe when you're back home you and your girlfriend could learn the basics then try to ride again once you're abroad?

Yes, that's what we decided to do - maybe even get a motorcycle driver license, as the full course of 2 months costs around 150 pounds here) perks of living in a third world country)))

Foreigners need an international motorcycle driving permit in Thailand. If you don't have one, you WILL regret it if the police stop you!!!

Never ever ever give your passport to anyone!! That is your most important document so please do not I say again do not ever give your passport to anyone!! always give them a copy if they do not want to have a copy and want your passport go someplace else to rent a motorbike or motorcycle!! but do not ever ever! Give your passport away, number two when you are going to rent a motorcycle or motorbike or a car take a video with your smart phone or iPad of the car or motorcycle or motorbike walk all the way around with your hand on the bike or car to make sure there is no scratches make sure there’s no wax covering the scratch that they already had put there previously and it covered with colored wax and say that you did it when you come back, make sure you Always wear a helmet especially if you are a person from another country because they will stop you first before they will stop a thai Citizen and want you to pay 500 thai bar on the spot which is illegal always go to the police station if they will refuse to let you go to the police station then they are either a fake cop or a crooked cop. you go to the police station anyway!! And plus wear a helmet because for safety sake always have your international drivers license with you ,did you know it is legal for only American citizens to have their American drivers license or American motorcycle license with them when they drive in Thailand in driving a car or motorcycle without having international drivers license, yes America is the only country that can do that because in 1949 at the Geneva Convention treaty from the old king who was also a American Who was born in Cambridge Massachusetts have gave executive order only to Americans to use the American drivers license and or American motorcycle license here in Thailand and it is still in effect today 2019,and most people don’t know about that so the best way to do is to get A print out of that 1949 Geneva Convention treaty between United States and Thailand in driving in Thailand with your American drivers license get a copy of that and have it translated into Thai, only if you going to stay in Thailand for a long period of time and have that letter signed and sealed by the Ministry of foreign affairs and keep it with you if you’re using your American drivers license or motorcycle license that way you can present it to a police officer A car rental agency they can read it in thai and they cannot dispute against it. And you should have no problems. If you scratch or damage or crash the bike you must have money on you or quick access to money at ATM The best way and more safe for you, if you do not want to carry money on you in large denominations, I recommend not to carry a large amount of money on you, machine to be able to pay for the damage on the bike but take a video circle around that bike completely on the bottom on the top front and back and on the sides and of the front of the bike or car with your video camera let them see you do that so they know that you not a easy target to scam and be sure remember put your hand on the bike or car to make sure there’s no wax or wet color paint to cover up previous scratches before you got the bike or the car so you know that everything is OK when you want to rent the The motor bike or motorcycle or car and please be careful out there there was no medical insurance and these people here do drive crazy, Because Thailand is number one in the world and fatalities they die every 15 minutes on motorcycle somewhere in Thailand they don’t follow the rules and they lied went to sleep same situation with the cars trucks and buses be very very careful out there if you’re waiting at the light for it to turn green do not just go through the green light right away look to your right and look to your left before you go through a green light when the green light turn green because people here will Go right through a red light so please be very careful out there.

Totally irresponsible. If you don't have a motorbike license you shouldn't be riding. It's not just about obeying the law. It's also about people safety, riders and pedestrians. Riding a motorbike is NOT like riding a bicycle.

  • @TheDinger777
    @TheDinger7774 жыл бұрын

you actually need a LICENSE to ride a motorbike in Thailand! Not just 200 baht! It is against the law to ride a bike without a license and if you ride without one and have an accident, then you firstly won't be covered with your travel insurance. therefore you will be liable for all damage and medical charges, which can run into $$$$$$$$$$. This really is a very silly video. DO NOT RIDE IN THAILAND WITHOUT A LICENSE AND PROTECTION its the worse place in the world for motorcycle accidents!
