Just wish i could wind the clock back and go through the learning all over again, it was scary at times but left me with years of happy memories. Incidentally I taught myself flying in empty parks with a Precedent Electrafly motor glider. Years later I still enjoy it very much but for me, nothing matches the excitement of those early days.

Just wanted to say I really appreciate your videos. I've currently moved to a new location with much greater access to wide, open space and have begun to reignite my interest in astronomy and model rocketry. RC aircraft seemed like a logical addition and something I always wanted growing up, so this video was really informative in helping my navigate my options. Fortunately there's an AMA field 30 minutes away, which isn't bad at all. Looking forward to heading over there next weekend! Keep up the great work!

good info! little confusing to continually touch on the super huge side of the hobby, but it's all scope I guess. I'd just add that for 2021, in my opinion, beginners should know about the FliteTest style of foamies, they're really quite amazing... it's the cheapest way into the hobby, and gets people into building as well as the flying, and even inventing stuff, which is awesome. The building also helps teach people how to repair stuff. ...and for less than the price of the Spektrum DX6e shown, someone can get a FrSky or Radiomaster or similar that have 16 to 32 channels and will do literally anything anyone could ask of it. I grew up on Futaba, owned Hitecs and even a Jeti, but I now fly a Radiomaster TX16S... $150, touch screen, 16 channels, and can do more than what even the Jeti could, telemetry, flying DSM bind-n-flys, it's a high value radio.

All valid points my friend!!! As for radios, I just moved over to a FlySky 10-channel from using Tactic RC radios for the past 13 years. An inexpensive transmitter with capabilities that rival most expensive radios. So far, I have been able to get 10 flights on this radio and, to tell the truth, I'm really liking it! Thank you for this video. I actually flew and crashed in a emply lot by the highway across from my house.i coulda got a huge ticket or hit a car. Wich i did hit the street with a big plane. Guerrilla RC flying - take back the skies!

Great video. It kinda skips some gas/nitro options for starting, but I don’t see them as being practical for park flyers or backyard learners anyway.

I agree, i taught myself to fly over 20 years ago thanks to electric and this enabled me to skip joining a club and learn for myself, had i only had nitro theres no way I could have strung it all together on my own and then fly the noisy beast in a public park. Even with electric early mornings and late evenings were the only option to get the park to myself with the the added bonus that the air was calmer too.

This video really helped me with a choice. I am very curious about RC planes, but looking at everything, mostly the 'learn how to fly" part, it seems it might not be the thing fkr me....I'm too much of a nervous wreck...

Most are designed to lessen the nerves. Beginner setting along with the panic button, will definitely be your friend! You could always start out with the flight simulator and once you build up some muscle memory skills, you should have no problem flying one of the RTF trainers. I like all the older balsa pattern planes, I like the .40 to.60 glow engine size, I have Astro Hog, Kaos 60, Moonraker all low wingers I love to build my own planes, any planes along those would be great.. Thanks for the help.....

Probably plowing old ground but, at 3:27, stated with RTF you get a “fully assembled airplane”. I’ve not seen an RTF that was “fully-assembled.. Assembly is always required in my experience.

Have you done a video on weather? Variables such as wind speed, direction, turbulence etc have a huge effect on flying for beginners. Angle of the sun, low cloud and mist, different wind speeds at different altitudes, temperature, the list goes on..there must be millions of flyers who learnt the hard way that it was just too windy, I still have to remind myself to be disciplined enough to call a no fly even though I might be desperate to go up.

@@TheTravelingTechGuy I just know how big a part it played in my own learning curve. Thermals too can be interesting, i bought my young son a multiplex pico cub (early 3 channel high wing electric) and on warm days if the thermals were strong enough we could float around indefinitely on zero power. Below a certain altitude the plane felt like it was made of lead when you finally came down out of the thermal lift; a bit like stepping out of a swimming pool and experiencing your true body weight after 30 minutes in the water!

I lost my sports cub s2 because it was too windy to fly. I learned the hard way. Lol. It just kept going away.

@@jareddakid2 Sorry to hear that. Even lumpy turbulent air or unpredictable gusts can make flying less enjoyable. Early morning or late evening give best chance of calm conditions. Early to mid afternoon usually worst.

Join a local club, and a member may “buddy box” you for free. Worked for me!

It's easier to say what not to buy as a 2nd airplane. For now, stay away from the war birds, jets and 3D airplanes. Since you're on a 40 size trainer, maybe buy a high wing sport airplane. It will be similar to the trainer with the high wing but, have more maneuverability that will help you increase your flying skills. There are plenty of 3S airplanes on the market that can help you with your skills and, they're a lot of fun to fly too. You may want to look at planes similar to the E-flite Timber, HobbyZone Carbon Cub, etc. Once you mastered flying high wings, switch over to a low wing sport airplane. Low wings require more speed to flow more wind under their wings to produce lift and requires the same for landing where as a high wing, doesn't require a lot of speed to take off or land. @@natal777 hi John...thanks for your response and since I posted this a couple of months back , I have already picked up and been flying the Bigfoot, the Tundra V2 and 1100mm foam Ugly Stick ....yes, the Bigfoot is a great flyer for a beginner !!! ....I am now looking to move onto my 3rd step plane and would like to stay with the 3S LiPo size.........I find the inventory at most online sites is very limited...........thanks much again for your input....

Will transmitters come with a pc program that we can use to learn the techniques of flying without seeing pieces of plane all over the field.

I think I 've seen advertisement for a transmitter that comes with a simulator but, I cannot remember where I saw it?? The simulator I mentioned in the video, RealFlight 9.5, has a version that comes with a transmitter/controller with the software.

Float planes are cool to watch take off and land on water but, can be a real challenge for a new RC pilot. Without knowing specs on the PBY model you are interested (construction material, electric/gas, etc.), I can only point you to a couple of web sites that may be of benefit to you, www.flyinggiants.com and www.rcscalebuilder.com. What is your opinion about the rc plane that won't turn much without the rudder.. Do i need to move the rudder right/left while flying?

I have quite a few planes like that. Rudder input does help make the turns more smooth and precise thus, makes the particular plane, more enjoyable to fly. Once you get used to using the rudder, it all becomes an automatic muscle reflex. Thanks for the comment and for watching!!!

Most, if not all of the transmitter/receiver combinations, will reach that distance or more. If you are wanting longer distances than 1,200 ft say, a mile or more, you might want to look into finding a 72MHz transmitter. A good one would be the EFlite Apprentice 1.5mm RTF. that comes with SAFE. This will let you select between beginner, intermediate and experienced mode.

All that I have been able to find so far, is an airplane labeled as a drone with all the specs you were asking for on eBay. It's made by a company in the Netherlands. The cost..... Way too expensive (IMO) at $721.00 USD. May be a case where you have to add a camera to an airplane and if the camera has an app, use your phone for the screen... While there are still work to be done, the AMA was able to get some compromises from the FAA in the final rule. If what was in the original NPRM had become the final rule, it would have been the death of our hobby. Thanks for the comment and for watching!!!
