Beginner's Guide to EQ (part 1)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
We've just added a new video tutorial by Dan Worrall. This time he explains the fundamentals of EQ'ing in a mixing situation, starting with the basic shelf, cut and bell shapes as found on a hardware console, to precision EQ'ing using a modern plug-in like FabFilter Pro-Q 2.

Pretty good guide. I'd say add in 1-2khz for piercing on certain female vocals.
I just can't leave this Video without shouting out LOUD at Dan for this massively informative BEGINNERS Guide :) This is by far the BEST Tutorial explaining all about EQ + CIRCULAR MIXING Mistakes + Masking Frequencies so clearly.... Will watch this again & again to refresh in future.... God Bless you for all the efforts in putting this piece of Gold together !!! Cheers.. :)
The mix on this song is quite simply incredible.

Humbar - Miss your train is unreleased yet i think
by far, the best intro to EQ i've ever seen! simply superb! so helpful... a HUGE thank you!
Between this and Part Two, you have given me a methodology I never had before. I began applying it to remix older material I had not been happy with, and the difference, to use a cliche, is like night-to-day in distinction between instruments, clarity, and depth. Instead of poking about vaguely and blindly referring to online EQ charts, you have given me a process and, with it, confidence to arrive at more pleasurably listenable mixes. Thank you, Dan!!! You make beautiful tutorials.
I love this Fab Filter channel. The presentation is just spot on. And a large part of it is the voice over work. I love watching these and learning from them.
I'm always so happy when a new Dan Worrall video shows up in my video feed :-) Thanks for sharing your knowledge in such an awesome way with all the attention to detail and always well thought out presentation! Looking forward to part two! :-)
Yes! Love the ear training exercise. Such a good idea. Looking forward to part 2!
I just love you. You explain all of the important stuff so clearly.
This is an incredibly great tutorial. Thank you for taking the time doing this.
This is absolutely amazing. You explain this basic fundamental in such a palatable way. Thank you so much.
Sheesh! That video was EXCELLENT!!!! It's not that I haven't heard some of these things before, but I feel like I have a new and fresh perspective on eq. I can't wait for part 2.
I would love to see a video just like this about compression. I want Dan to do it just like this video where he actually starts off with some hardware, and then translates the same techniques to the software.
The best EQ video I've seen.
Thank you. I enjoyed this both for it's educational value to me and Dan's delivery. A perfect friendly non-patronising voice helps so much in my opinion. Often presenters try far too hard to impart their personality over the real goal or over exaggerate the product. Dan's balance of detail explanation is just right for me and he is a real asset to FabFilter's support channels. More please. :-)
Thanks for creating these. The clarity of the explanations and quality of the tutorials are extremely good. Well done and I look forward to seeing more. Best regards.
Highly educative!! Thank you FF & DW 🍀
One stop shop for eq tutorial!!. Thankyou so much.
EXCELLENT comparing the desk to in-the-box differences so folks can wrap their ears and eyes around how too much freedom can impede progress! GO DAN
Wow, you guys are great !!! I’m sold, and I REALLY appreciate the info
Excellent turtorial! wow, this really helps. I bought the bundle 3 months ago and i have just used presets. Cant wait for your next video.
I seriously cannot thank you enough for these videos... I wish I could have the other 20+ hours of videos from other sources I've watched back though!
The best tutorial on youtube yet...
One of the best ear training exercises I’ve had is live mixing, in a setup without a PFL option (soloing on a reference speaker to avoid interrupting the mix). It forces you to *always* mix within the context of the mix.
I need more vids like this one. I watch tuts all day and rearly learn anything other whats new and how the knob works. This explained a lot but more importantly it showed how it can be used. Please keep making these. Like said below we need one by you with the C pro 2. I know that all the features do but I want to see someone else use it. Thats what noobs like me need.
Really well done. Thanks team!
Thanks for teaching me in these tutorials.
very good tutorial. EQ is the tool I always think I know and the more I go the less I know. It is a lifetime education to learn how to EQ properly and have taste for what sounds good while also having the knowledge of what will sound good in most speakers..
Even though there was not really much new for me this video was amazing and I will recommend it to young producers! Thanks.
Excellent tutorial- ThankYou!
DAN WORRALL!!! Excellent!
Fab Filter tutorials are so useful. Thank ou very much
This is AMAZING stuff!
Dan is an excellent tutor
Thank you for these tutorials
this has helped me so much with EQ
thank you! love the Fab videos. so Pro.
By the way, this is an awesome explanation!!!
Very good video!!! - I thought that I know everything in the basic video about Eq, but now I know more... :-)
awesome video! great info
Dear fab filter team: I just want you to know that im subscribed to your channel because Dan Worrall..thats it😌
Thanks! I learned a lot!
Great exercise - I find the autogain function counters my sense of perception adjusting to the imbalance, allowing me to focus on the effect of the increase in frequency without so much added volume complicating it
so good thanks dan!!
GOAT explanation
This is some pretty solid stuff
Thanks!!!! Dan, FF, Ears Wide Open Here!!!!! this one is Fab!!!
Incredible!
Brilliant stuff
Greatness. Thank you.
The analogue console required a true experienced professional that was the most important difference, while any equipment in digital realm can be used by anyone after making a short training. Of course for amateur results good for social gossip products. By the way thanks a lot for the very easy to follow and exhaustive tutorial
Subscribed just to see part 2. I hope there will be that
Nice to see 'equalisers' spelled correctly on the desk
Masterful!!

No. He just EQ-d his own voice.
Okay, I've become hooked on this FabUlous series of tutorials. This is some of the most valuable content I've discovered in quite a while. Dan is utterly brilliant, so it came as a very pleasant non-surprise when I saw he's using REAPER. Of course he's using the most innovative and flexible piece of software I've ever encountered. It sets the bar for all software developers in so many ways. It should be studied as part of every computer/software engineering curriculum. Of course someone as talented and intelligent as Dan is going to gravitate toward something as revolutionary as REAPER. Well done all around, Dan, and much thanks to you for another amazing tutorial. I'm not going to be getting much sleep for quite a while. My eyes are already getting hazy. I love it!
This is too fucking spectacular!
the band playing are pretty good yeah :) do you play with them ? or are you just mixing their tracks ?
14:55 mix engineer's vocab, very useful, thanks!

I've been wanting to ask, what does the "LLS" stand for at the end of those reference tracks? 14:08 They seem like really dynamic masters as well.

Just found you! How do I solo an EQ level for a specific HZ range on my Fab Filter?
Dan Worral shoulda been the one sitting on the Iron throne. What a fucking legend
so what's the difference between these type of eq machines and plug-in ones
Amen...
I've bought all Humbar's releases but can't find "Miss your Train". Anyone out there point me in the right direction?
Does anybody know the artist of this song? Ive been searching for their info in Dan's Bandcamp but I couldnt find any clue.
What's that music in the background?
As per 13:46, is there an actual way to show multiple Pro-Q displays on Pro Tools, or is this just something you edited for the video?

Where do i get those Songs in the Flac format?
i'm absolutely guilty of "Favorite frequency syndrome" regardless of context
Once again, fabfilter sets the standard for quality mixing tutorials...absolutely great
Hi Dan, what is the name of the song playing at the end?

I would love to hear the full version, it sounds great.
😅 he scans his mix and it still sounds great with every boost!
thx for the video, but it's often hard to get a real appreciation for what kind of diff you are or aren't making because you keep talking over the sounds, with only the very briefest of pauses if that...suggest a little more pause action so we can "listen in" a little more :)
8:14 what song is this????
can you make a vid on this that's only about voice? I make guides like this (not for this topic though) and i need the power of knowledge.
The name of the song in the beginning please? Surprised no one asked...

Can you just buy PCI Express card with Thunderbolt 3?
why am i just finding this?
Favourite Frequency Syndrome abbreviates to FFS, which is probably what you end up saying once you realize the damage you've done when eqing everything in isolation. "Oh For F***'s Sake !"
The EQ on the console sounds amazingly smooth, so much more natural and effective than any algorithmic plugin

And yet you probably wouldn't be able to tell them apart in a controlled, double-blind test.
I want Dan's reference or I won't be happy.
This is really good but the music is soooo distracting
